> Honor of Harriette: Saturday the 4th of February an anthem written by Stephen Paulus in honor of Harriette was performed by the Chancel Choir in the Sanctuary at Noon for Family and Friends and also Sunday at all the Services in the Sanctuary. The composer was present Saturday and Sunday. Last Sunday Sydnor said Ownbey members were invited because we are friends - and family. Here is his quote beginning at 5:49 on the audio for the class "Next Saturday at Noon, they will be performing an anthem that has been written by a fellow Stephen Paulus in Harriette's Honor. It was arranged by the church and choir because she had been in the choir for 50 (54 to be exact) years when she retired. It is to be performed at noon (in the Sanctuary) for family and friends - so you are friends and in fact you are family so you are welcome to come . . .but you are especially invited to come at noon on Saturday."
We had a good number of people from Ownbey present Saturday. It was a joyous occasion.The anthem is based on Psalm 121 and entitled My Help Comes from the Lord.. The Anthem was repeated Sunday. (20120205) After the opening hymn, Jim started class with a prayer. Anne Copeland updated us about Betty Campbell who had the bad fall recently, nose not set. Her arthritis in back is bothering her. Said tell every one she misses us. She loves where she is living. Reatha reported on the death of the brother of Syd and Chick Friday; The service for him is Monday in Columbia. Here is his Obituary. Bill Webb at Summit and would appreciate visits; (he and Linda Christopher came into class a few minutes later.). Susan Mobley followed up with Christine who is improving. Reatha’s leg still is a bother. Reported Janie J says she hopes to come but wears her self out too much usually getting ready. Curriculum Committee met and will get out schedule soon. Jim read from a daily Devotional called Jesus Calling “trust me or worry, never run out of things to worry about, can chose to trust me (instead).”
Don H led the lesson on different religions after thanking folks for help prior to and after his son George’s passing

> After the opening hymn, Jim started class with a prayer. Joyce was present and Jim read a poem by Ben III about his daughter Christy which was printed in the program for the services.

>Reatha was on Retreat with Women’s Group and there was no Health and Happiness info reported except Don R told of how thankful he was of the immediate miracle of cataract surgery. Mary Katherine was also on the Retreat but sent word all bills paid and will make a report soon.
>Curriculum Council meeting (all welcome) THURS. FEB. 2, at 7pm - room TBA, date changed because of Administrative Board meeting on original date. Don Hammer plans to lead the meeting and he is scheduled to teach the class on February 05
>Spaghetti Dinner at 12:15 in Jubilee Hall on Sunday March 4. Durward mentioned the effort Shebra puts into the preparation and we want a good turnout. Durward got class ok to invite other SS classes to join us.
>Helping Hands. Tom Stinson reported we raised over $1,300 from the Christmas Breakfast held in the Ownbey C;lass room in December

I think most folks in class were against it (sin, that is). Some believed in Original sin, some did not. Was acknowledged the Methodist Church belies in Original Sin though it is not mentioned in the Bible. I found the Methodist Church believes a child is born with a sinful nature:

Latest Postage Stamp Rate Increases and Changes

The price for a First-Class Mail stamp will increase one cent on January 22, 2012. The new cost for a First-Class stamp will be 45 cents.

Rates effective January 22, 2012:

* Letters (1 ounce) will increase 1-cent to 45 cents.

* First-Class letter additional ounces (for letters over 1 ounce) will remain unchanged at 20 cents.

* Postcards will increase 3-cents to 32 cents.

* Letters to Canada or Mexico (1 ounce) will increase 5-cents to 85 cents.

* Letters to other international destinations will increase 7-cents to $1.05

Good news for business mailers: When the new prices go into effect on January 22, 2012, the second ounce for First-Class Mail Presort letters will be free. This will give companies expanded opportunities to advertise new services and products to their customers as part of bill and statement First-Class Mail Presort mailings weighing between one and two ounces.

(Here is the eulogy delivered by Bill Arnold for Christy (written by Ben and Ann) on Wednesday morning at the 11 a.m. worship service at First Methodist Church Lexington.

EULOGY FOR CHRISTY ANN WITHERINGTON

Christy was born in the shadow of Durham Cathedral in northern England on August 14, 1979 and died January 11, 2012 in Durham, North Carolina.

Christy loved her British roots. Her summer term in England studying Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon with Ben’s English Prof from Carolina, Chris Armitage, was a true life highlight. She called and said, with her newly-minted British accent, “Hello Mum and Dad”. Fortunately she was able to twice more visit her homeland and explore its rich heritage. Christy was not just an Anglophile – she was born British.

Ben led a session here at MPUYMC last Monday night. Lou will discuss one of Ben’s books next Sunday. Reported Bill W is at the Summit as Linda recovers from a medical procedure. Ann C had surgery recently - no food or visitors now, but prayers and cards appreciated. Betty fell and broke her nose, hurting her eyesight which already was consider legally blind. Christina is recovering from her ankle break and appreciates calls and outings (and cards I add). A member reported Jane P about the same. Don H planned to be with us today but developed an upset stomach.
>Jim mentioned the AV system fixed to let DVD go through our sound system. Jim shared a story about prayer with results similar to “I prayed for courage and received dangers to overcome, . .nothing I asked for did I receive but all I needed.”

20120114 Reatha Update on Health and Happiness

Dear Ownbey Family,
1. The obit for CHRISTY ANN is in today's paper. If you don't receive the paper, you can go online to www.charlotteobserver.com and click on the obituaries tab.

2. DURWARD is leading our lesson tomorrow -- remember to consider your "definition" of RELIGIOUS vs SPIRITUAL. Both he and CONNIE had been ill earlier in the week, but when i tried calling him this aft'n, i got their maching instead. I'm HOPING that means that they were out and about (and not at some med facility!)

3. ARLYENE, her dtr (JAN), and SIL (DAVID) were bitten by the Tummy Bug last weekend but are better now.

4. Called CRISTINA and chatted w/her a bit earlier this week. She is s-l-o-w-l-y recovering from her foot/ankle surgery. She has a terrific PT -- if you ever need one, contact her for his name, etc -- and goes 2x/wk for her therapy. Sometimes she has to use her cane while she's at home, but she is trying NOT to use it (doc's orders). Whenever she goes out, she will take her walker to have IF she needs it. MEL still has a caregiver who can also help Cris. I'm sure Cris would appreciate calls (and you can then check about visits).

5. BILL is now at The Summit for at least two weeks. Granted, it's an adjustment, but something that he really needs. We'll see how the trial period goes. LINDA will keep us informed. Please keep them in your prayers.

6. Got a call just a bit ago from LETITIA, one of the daughters. ANN had surgery on Wed but came home last night. Right now, she needs lots of rest, so they ask for NO CALLS OR VISITS. They are well-stocked for food, so all they would like for the time being are OUR THOUGHTS, PRAYERS, and CARDS -- JACK will not be in class tomorrow -- no reflection on you, Durward!

I think that's it -- more like HEALTH & HEALTH this time.Oh, i fell again yest'y! But this time i was hurrying up my driveway, stepped on the edge of a flowerbed, twisted my ankle, and fell forward -- catching the brunt of the fall on my R knee and tearing my jeans (which will now become my yardwork jeans). I was able to get up easily, go back inside, and clean/dress my scraped knee. I'm a little stiff today, but okey-dokey otherwise.

WITHERINGTON Christy Ann, 32, died in her home in Durham, NC of natural causes on Wed, Jan 11, 2012. Christy was born Aug 14, 1979 in Durham, England where her parents lived from 1977-1980 while her father pursued his Ph.D. at the University of Durham. Christy graduated from P.L. Dunbar High School in 1997, and she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Perdue University in 2002 with a degree in experimental psychology. She completed her Master's degree in Analytics at North Carolina State University in May 2010. Since June 2010 she has worked as a project scheduling consultant for IBM. Christy is survived by her parents, Ann Sears Witherington and Dr. Ben Witherington III of Lexington; her brother, David Witherington of North Wales, PA; her grandmother, Joyce West Witherington of Wilmington, NC; her maternal aunt, Elaine Sears-Dennehy of Attleboro, MA; her paternal aunt, Laura Joyce Witherington of Jacksonville, FL; and her Russian "sister" Yuliya Tsutserova. She is preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Ben Witherington Jr, and her maternal grandparents, Ralph and Florence (Boucher) Sears. Visiting hours will be held Tue, Jan 17, from 6-8pm at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on Harrodsburg Rd. A special service of remembrance will be held on Wed, Jan 18, at 11am at First United Methodist Church, 200 W. High Street, Lexington. Interment will be at Blue Grass Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, charitable gifts in Christy's name can be sent to the Lexington Humane Society, 1600 Old Frankfort Pike, Lexington, KY 40504 (www.adoptlove.net)

Dear Ownbey Family, Some of you have heard by now but JOYCE WITHERINGTON's 31-yr-old granddaughter, Kristy(Christie?)died suddenly of an embolism Wed. She was living in Durham. Her mom and dad, Ann and Ben, of course live in Lexington, KY, where Ben is on the faculty at Asbury Seminary. Her brother David lives in the Philly area.The service will be next Wed at First UMC in Lexington, KY.  Visitation will be the night before, 6-8pm.  [i'm not sure of that location]LAURA, Joyce's daughter, will be flying in tonight.  Joyce's brother arrives today.Thanks to MARTHA BLEDSOE for calling me w/the details this morning. Introduction: > (The Snyder class prepares a summary of each meeting and I will add it if I get a copy) Ownbey Class was invited to visit the Luther Snydner/Ruth Fisher Class as Ownbey did nor meet Christmas or today, January 01, 2012. Patric Lummuka , the Class president opened the class with a Special Prayer for hopes for 2012. He welcomed Ownbey and Wesley visitors. A class member Sarah Colin, passed away recently and the Memorial to Be Tuesday 01/03/2012 at noon. Ann Martin mentioned Bobbie Phillips was doing well and passed along her greetings to the Class. Patric acknowledged several Thank You Notes and Memorials.The secretary reported birthdays recently and noted attendance today was 30 compared to 21 last year this time. They then received $$ from classes members for bragging and for recognizing folks such as the teacher for the day and guests, and they probably picked up another $50 by “fleecing the flock” as they called it. Jerry led the class in a couple of rousing hymns noting “if you come to this class, you have to sing.” Marie Pearce provided the musical accompaniment. Patrick explained they have jokes always and he had one - “Best way for a man to always remember his wife’s birthday was to forget it just once.” Erman added that Scrooge’s favorite Christmas meal was ”Hum berger.” They mentioned several activities including the next quarterly Breakfast in two weeks in the class room. Robert Dalton commented on the Ownbey class and said nothing would please me more for us to join together as both of us are declining in membership. He acknowledged the Snyder class was an active class with an endowment of $330,000 from a gift of a person . .” Melvin McIntosh then lead the lesson on the gifts involved at Jesus birth and we discussed how we have seen evidence of Jesus in our lives and how we share gifts to God in today’s world and share with others. As you know, the Ownbey class will not meet on Jan 1st but will

re-convene Jan 8th. Don Redding has advised that the Luther Snyder

Class (which WILL meet on Jan 1) has invited all members of Ownbey,

that wish to come, to attend their SS lesson. They start class at 9:45 AM

and they end at 10:30 AM giving folks time to get to 11:00 AM worship.

Melvin McIntosh will be the teacher and he says of the lesson:

The subject of the lesson for next Sunday, January 1, 2012, is "Called to Gift".

The scripture is Matthew 2:1-12, which tells the story of the visit of the Wise Men

to see the Christ child, which resulted in the revealing of the Messiah to the Gentiles

(Epiphany, a sudden appearance of a divine being, or a revealing of something special,

in the midst of ordinary circumstances). The Wise Men brought gifts, so there is

some emphasis on giving.

Judy S had an operation about 10 days ago on her eye after a fall several weeks ago that damages the eye. She said today it was doing ok.

The Dedication of the Witherington Collection

On a gloriously sunny day in Charlotte, Dec. 2nd, the library I have built for over forty years, was dedicated at the Gordon-Conwell Charlotte campus in south Charlotte. The first picture above is of course a NASA picture showing where in the world the light is visible from space. As it happened, I was preaching on John 1—’the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it’, so it was a singular providence that this picture had been left up on the screen on the chapel platform when I preached.
This next picture is of a painting by my friend Leighton Ford, the brother in law of Billy Graham. Leighton is one of the trustees who was present for the library dedication.

Here is my Mom, Joyce Witherington, standing proudly at the entrance way into the collection.

Here are my beloved Loeb Classical Library volumes. It was hard to give them up. Most of them I bought second hand from the oldest continuously operating antiquarian bookstore in America— Brattle’s in downtown Boston.

Here you see Kittel and Barth’s Dogmatics, and the works of Luther, among other things. I must tell you a story about how I came to have the full set of Barth’s dogmatics. My wife and I heard that T+T Clark, the publishers of Barth in the English-speaking world, was having to move from one location on George Street in Edinburgh to another. So in 1978 we got on the train, road to Edinburgh, and we went up to the large door at No. 42 and knocked. The door was opened by a wee little Scotsman who asked “Are you here for the Books (pronounced ‘Booooches’)? When I told him we were, he ushered us in to a little alcove with a divan. He said ‘I’ll be right back,” and he went down some stairs into a basement. He began hauling up all of Barth’s Dogmatics, then a bunch of ICC commentaries, then McIntosh’s History of the Reformation. It filled up the whole counter of the divan! He then asked…. ‘will ye be havin ‘em’?’ I explained I was an impecunious doctoral student with little money and could not afford them all. ‘What about a pound a piece?’ My heart leapt and I said ‘I’LL BE HAVIN EM!’ And so it was Ann and I dragged two huge boxes of books to the train, and headed back to Durham. My 12 fellow doctoral students of Barrett at Durham could hardly believe my good fortune. A couple got on the train and went to Edinburgh hoping for a similar outcome. Alas, by then the books were gone. So the Dogmatics quite literally went from the publisher to me to a little collection in Charlotte.

Here is a nice display of some of the book awards I have won, and some framed pictures of other books I have written as well.

Here is the seminary chapel where I preached, with its wonderful painting of Jesus the sower. Notice the animals in the picture. It reminded me of my own Christmas cat (see below our Minny cat in a box of Christmas wrapping).

And here is the old boy himself with his mom (that fellow looks like he has had one too many turtle mocha’s from Caribou). A good time was had by all.

The concert
in Jubilee Hall will feature vocal choirs and a 30-piece orchestra that includes Myers Park Strings, da Capo Brass and members of the Charlotte Symphony. In all, more than 125 voices will sing out. An offering will support the Walter Ball Music Endowment Fund at church, honoring the late music director.

Tonight the Induction for 10 new Stephen Ministers was held. A service was held in the Sanctuary followed by dinner and distribution of certificates in Jubilee Hall. Bill Roth did the homily in the Sanctuary, and he and Kay and Ken Rice were M/C’s of the presentation of the Certificates, Pins, Nametags, and Pendants.

20111128 Reatha update-George

Dear Ownbey Family, DON HAMMER called me last night. GEORGE's memorial service will be this Thurs, Dec 1, at 3pm, in Francis Chapel at the church. One of the things Don mentioned in his message was if i had any remembrances of George, please share them w/ELLEN ROBISON, who is leading the service. I really don't have any... since i was about 5 years older... I just have vague memories of him and sister Karen -- always think of them together... Do any of you have any from more recent years -- like when George helped w/the sanctuary audio system? If so, simply email them to Ellen: ellen@mpumc.org . Thanks.

In SS yest'y, i shared what Don told me about George's last days. The other month when George had lost his ability to swallow and was hospitalized, he was put on a ventilator as well as a gastro-tube (directly into his stomach). Later he also got a trach tube. As far as long-term options, very few places in NC allowed for a ventilator. SUSAN MOBLEY and Don visited one such facility in Taylorsville and reported their findings back to George. Altho' he really didn't want to leave Charlotte, George agreed to the move b/c it did allow him to remain on a vent. However, after being there only a few days, George decided that it was NOT the quality of life he wanted after all. He had talked w/Ellen a few weeks ago about end of life issues, and thus came to (hard) decision to be taken OFF the vent. Hospice of Catawba Co was called in last weekend, and on Mon (the 21st), w/Don, brother Eric, and Susan by his side, George made his peaceful passage to Life Eternal. BILL ROTH had gotten to visit w/him two days before, and Ellen, the day before. It was his wish to be cremated and his ashes placed in the church's columbarium.

Since the labyrinth will be set up in Francis Chapel today thru Wednesday, the earliest the mem svc could be held is Thursday. Don't know if Don wishes a reception afterward. I'll check and let you know. Peace, Reatha - Mon - 6am

George E. Hammer

George E. Hammer
Mr. Hammer, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully in the care of Hospice of Catawba Valley on November 21, 2011 at Valley Nursing Center, Taylorsville.
George was born in Salem, Mass. on March 29, 1957, and had resided in Charlotte since 1971. He graduated from Myers Park High School in 1974 and UNC Chapel Hill in 1978. He was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church.
His main employment was with the South Park Office of Merrill Lynch, from which he retired on disability in 2008. George had Myotonic Dystrophy, which progressed throughout his adult life.
For several years in the 1980's, George was a volunteer tutor, teaching reading to adults in a CPCC program. He served more than 200 hours and received personal recognition from Barbara Bush.
George is survived by his father, Donald E. Hammer, MD; his brother Eric and sister-in-law Vicki. He was preceded in death by his mother, Emily G. Hammer (1984) and his sister, Karen Funderburk (2006).
The family deeply appreciates the care provided for George at Carolinas Medical Center and Valley Nursing Center.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, December 1, at 3 p.m. in Francis Chapel of Myers Park United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Valley Nursing Center, 581 NC Hwy. 16 South, Taylorsville, NC 28681, designated for the Resident Music Therapy Fund.
