Dear Ownbey Family,
Thursday I got this update about Harlan from Durward...

After having visited Harlan, I have had conversation with Susan Mobley as early as this noon. Following that visit she has spent time with the son David and the hospital staff. The following are my notes of the conversation I have just (3pm) had with Susan:
* they want to limit visitation to ONLY hospital staff and family;
* they believe NO sleep has added greatly to his mental problems;
* he is to be given CHANGED medicine, including some to insure sleep;
* when he is to go home is in DOUBT;
* his son David has stopped work and will now spend 100% of his available time to be with him;
* once we are told by David that he is at home, then working with David to get permission to visit will be advisable.
If we call his number at home, David will pick up on all messages.
Therefore I suggest someone be asked on behalf of the SS class to call every 2 or 3 days to get a status report and to determine if and when he is at home. Then, and only then, arrange for permission to visit.
This is the essence of the current situation.

On a lighter note...
Last Monday night, after Ellen's presentation (Women of the O.T.), Carol Needy told me about a neat show on the History Channel -- BATTLES B.C. It's been on Monday nights at 9pm. Carol said that on the 16th, it was about DAVID, and this past Monday, I saw most of the JOSHUA segment.
I looked thru my TV listing guide and found that segments ALSO come on TODAY at 3, 4, and 11pm (this one is supposed to be the DAVID one again). And at 5pm, there's a program entitled BIBLE BATTLES. That's the HISTORY CHANNEL, cable 65.
I hope to at least stop by class tomorrow. We are saying goodbye to Thomas Moore after Church in the Round, so I might be needed there to "direct traffic flow."
Also hope that some of you will be involved in our Mission Madness tomorrow! I'm working w/the McCreesh Place cookout :-)

All:
Recall the "Mayatima" project that Ownbey got involved with a couple of years ago where we helped Rick and Diana Wilson with their Aids orphan project in Kenya. Class members sponsored some orphans and we helped finance their farm which has since grown to include a church and a school on the property.
The Wilson's are continuing their ministry in Kenya and have now added a project in the southern Sudan, as well. Attached is a relatively new website that reports on their most recent activities. Rick has determined the needs in that region to include, fresh water(see the Sudan video), grain mills (see the women of Hope letter), and training for ten pastors that will facilitate the planting of churches.
Occasionally, class members ask us about progress on the projects. This is a great description of their ministry and paints a far better picture than we can.

Hello All:
Eleanor and I missed you all last Sunday but look forward to seeing you next Sunday. The Atlantic looked beautiful as always, and the seafood was delicious.
This week Winnie Culbreth had a birthday on the 15th and Willard Gourley will have one on the 20th.
Birthdays next week: Joe Hamrick and Harriette Thompson have birthdays on the 27th and Pat Culbreth has one on the 28th

Dear Ownbey Family,
1) In case you weren't in SS today and also haven't read the obits in today's OBSERVER, CARL HAWN has died. He died March 12th, one day before his 84th birthday and almost three months after FRANCES died.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm, Mon. Mar. 16th, at Harry and Bryant on Providence Rd. The family (nieces and nephews) will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park.
2) We chatted a bit about HARLAN today, but I failed to follow through w/Durward's suggestion about someone from our class visiting him daily. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN TAKING PART in this, send me your name, then I'll make a list and send it to S.Mobley. She's in closer contact w/Harlan and his sons and will know better how to coordinate this.
3) Ann Copeland told me that JANIE JONES had been ill. I called her tonight: she'd had a severe reaction to a generic medication (after being on the generic for c.two weeks), but is doing better now. She's still experiencing some swelling, but if it took two weeks for the generic to manifest itself, it might take that long (or longer) to work its way out.
GOOD NEWS: we met the HELPING HANDS challenge and raised $1,000... so that amount will be matched by our anonymous benefactor!!! Tom Stinson called me (and several of you, I understand) from Chicago yest'y to give the glowing report.
We also had a successful ROOM IN THE INN event Fri. night and Sat. morning. Thanks to everyone who helped w/that.
And thanks again to those of you who slogged thru the bad weather today to join us for Sunday school (despite my being the teacher.)

| Carl L. Hawn Mr. Hawn, of Charlotte, was born March 13, 1925 in Belmont, NC, and passed away March 12, 2009, one day before his eighty-fourth birthday. Carl was married to Frances R. Hawn for fifty-eight years. He served his country in the Army during World War II. Carl graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In Charlotte, NC, he worked for over forty years at GMAC. He was a long time member of Myers Park United Methodist Church. Upon retirement, Carl and Frances followed their hearts to Daytona Beach, FL, a place they had loved for many years. They bought a beautiful condominium where they could see both the Halifax River and the Atlantic Ocean. Carl enjoyed being out in the sun and walking on the beach for miles. For over ten years, Carl was a loving and devoted caretaker for Frances who had become ill. Frances passed away December 17, 2008. Carl is survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday March 16, 2009, at Harry and Bryant Co. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Got this update on Cristina from Lucia this aft'n. You might recall that she had been able to return to SS a few weeks ago, but app. has had a setback.

Hi Reatha
I've been remiss in not giving you "news" about my mother.
Unfortunately, she has been quite sick for the last two weeks. She had a flu-like illness that caused her to have bronchial congestion again (and she hadn't fully recovered from the December to February problems.) She is not choking as badly as she did earlier in the year, but she is coughing and, at times, has difficulty breathing. A few days ago, she developed laryngitis, so now she has even greater trouble speaking.
As you can imagine, she feels very worn down by so many months of illness and from trying various combinations of medications. Fortunately, my parents have help at home every day now so they don't need anything -- other than prayers that my mother can recover and resume her normal activities.

Dear Ownbey Family,
Durward emailed me last night and talked w/some of us this morning (while we hosted our Room in the Inn guests) about his visiting Harlan yest'y and the cramped semi-private room he found him in. Harlan was "confused" and was also fixated on getting out of "this jail."
I called Susan Mobley at home a little while ago and found out a bit more: Harlan's fall that Bill Roth referred to (in my earlier email) happened about 10 days ago. He's been in the hospital since, but depending how he progresses, might soon go home w/son David serving as his caregiver.
Both David and Tim visit Harlan daily. Durward suggested that we also send a class member daily. We'll discuss this idea during class tomorrow.
In the meantime, please continue your prayers for Harlan and his family. To paraphrase James (Howell): "Harlan has persistently proved to be resilient."
