Well, the first part of the doubleheader has been canceled. Only one church service tomorrow. No Sunday School.
Will leave it to Don Hammer to orchestrate the teaching schedule.
Stay warm. Move around very carefully. No broken bones, please.

Plan to be present Sunday. We have a doubleheader beginning this week with Sydnor on "The Other Preacher from Lynchburg" and following next week with Chick on "The Human Faces of God". Hope to see you Sunday. Have been house bound all week with major cold, not quite flu, but unwilling to share my germs with others, particularly my fellow Habitat office folks. E-mail should be germ proof. Willard
Pray for our sister congregation at South Tryon Community Church, and plan to support their barbecue fundraiser for Haiti this Saturday, beginning at noon at the church, 2516 S. Tryon Street. Barbecue plates for $7 will include barbecue, baked beans, slaw and a slice of cake.
Dear Ownbey Family,

In GASTON's lesson today, he quoted LEIGHTON FORD's saying that he and his granddaughter had marveled at watching the POWERS OF 10. I mentioned that I had a flipbook of that production and the video -- yes, video (not dvd). [in fact, i think i gave it to Amanda to use in her classroom]

But it later dawned on me, in this cyber-connected world, to check youtube, and voila` -- I found it! It's still pretty impressive on a tiny screen. Go to and SEARCH for "Powers of 10." It was produced by some guys at IBM.

We were glad to have ELLEN CHASON join us in class today. I wasn't expecting to see her for a few more weeks.

ANN COPELAND reported that she'd talked w/MARILEA GROGAN recently. They are all well, despite GARY's breaking his arm the other month.

Peace,
Reatha - Sun - 5:30pm
Dear Ownbey Family,
I wrote to Ellen to see how she'a doing since her pacemaker replacement. Here's her response.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Better. Sad to say, I fainted 5 days later and cracked my skull w/much blood.
Three days in hospital and every test known to man. I am now able to go out, but my endurance is poor.
No, I don't need anything, thank you. I hope to be back in SS in 2 weeks.
Thanks for checking. I knew my hard head would stand me in good stead.
Hugs to all.
Ellen

And I'm sure most of you have heard by now that MICHAEL NORTON died yest'y.
The obit should be in Friday's paper. His service will be at 3:00, Saturday.
For those of you who didin't know Michael, you may recall the article in THE CORNERSTONE
the other month, saying that the lobby in the new Moore Place will be named for him.
Anything else?
Peace,
Reatha - Th - 10:10pm

Subject: Ownbey Class Message Date: Sat, 16 Jan 2010 21:04:21 EST From: Willard I went to sleep at the switch. Failed to let you know Cal is teaching tomorrow. Hope Reatha has H & H info. Don said okay to be late as long as I got the message out before the start of class. I do not think he meant this late. Try to improve in the future. Has been a very busy Habitat week.

Subject: Amazing Grace Date: Sun, 10 Jan 2010 11:39:51 -0500 From: Jim > Recall, today, we discussed Amazing Grace and it's origins. Thanks, Durward for a wonderful job with the history and the rest of the lesson, as well. Attached is the video I mentioned, by Wintley Phipps where he tells a little history and sings "Amazing Grace". I believe that Phipps is with BGEA. This piece seems to be at a Bill Gaither concert. Very interesting, beautiful singing, and what a great testimony! (about 9 min) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMF_24cQqT0 jim h
2010 Officers are: (Elected 12/20/09)
Willard Gourley President,
Jack Copeland Vice President,
Ann and Bob Lumadue Secretary,
Mary Katherine Vass and Carol Douglas, Co-Treasurer
The other positions (like Helping Hands, Social, Music, etc) remain filled by the same people.
A great experiment is taking place. Don Redding is making an effort to teach me how to use the e-mail system to communicate. The secondary purpose is to see if the address book is up to date. As an aside, so we can complete this test quickly is the announcement that Durward Owen is talking about Grace for the lesson Sunday. No book . . . More later. See you Sunday. Willard
Ownbey H&H Report From: Reatha Andrew Sent: Sat 1/2/2010 5:06 PM Subject: Ownbey H&H Report Dear Ownbey Family, Got this message from ELLEN CHASON... -------------------------------------------------------------- I will not be in class this Sunday. Pacemaker being replaced Tuesday. Doctor wanted to do it Dec. 23, but I told him I was leaving town. I am now so exhausted all the time that it is difficult to walk to the dining room. I'll be so glad to get it fixed and feel like a "real person" AGAIN! Happy New Year to all. Ellen _________________________________________ Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. Called Twala today. She didn't need errands run. Daughter had borrowed her car to go down to the coast to visit some friends but was returning later today. She flies back to NY tomorrow. OH - one thing: Twala would like to find a home for her part-wild kitty. She thinks that she would make a good barn cat. I'm gonna check w/some friends in Troutman who live out in the country, but if any of you have other contacts, just let me know! Any other news? Hope to see you in the morning when DON HAMMER leads our lesson. Be sure to bundle up!!! Reatha - Sat - 6pm
