1. Tomorrow we'll begin our Advent study FINDING BETHLEHEM IN THE MIDST OF BEDLAM, by James W. Moore. I'll be leading us as we revisit the familiar Luke 2: 8-14. 2. Tonight at Freedom Park, 5-8pm, the Pilot Club of Charlotte's annual Love Lights will be on display. {Anne Buker reminded me of this last Sunday] The event will benefit Alzheimer's disease research. 5. Time to scoot up to Huntersville to see Claire off. (she's been here all week after Oliver's baptism last Sunday)

CORRECT spelling). Instead we explored some areas of concern for our class (and
MP-SS, in general) which needed "airing." I'll address those in an upcoming email,
but for now let me say that we DID get two volunteers to co-chair the Nominations
Committee: Lou and Eleanor -- thanks sooo much!

called her tonight, and altho' she can't come to class tomorrow, she would like to

>I'm also serving on the church's Sunday School Planning Team which has reps from all age groups and almost each adult SS class is represented. Even the younger classes are having pblms drawing new folks in, no matter how warmly they try to include visitors. It's sorta the "nature of the beast": the very things that draw us together as a class -- age, life stages, similar interests -- can seem cliquish to new folks. I'd like for us to kick around some ideas that might encourage new members for our class. I know we've discussed this before, but... we need to revisit it.

During Class Lou and Eleanor agree to bne Co Chair of Nominating Committee. May Katherine presentented the report of our Treasuery with $ in Helping Hands and $ in Operating funds. A propasal to move $500 from the Operation Account to Helping Hands was put off until the first of the year. A deiscussion follwed about efforts in the church and our class to improve attendance. Don R reported that his tally shows 67 mebers who are on our active roll. of those 2 kive ibn other cities and are not expected to attend. 14 of the 67 seldom come though appear able and 7 appear unable to come leaving us with 44 who come off and on. We had 18 present today ot of the 44 or 67. (under construction, Panther time)opotential for attendance.

October 26, 2013 Sydnor Reminds us of Abraham, Hagar, Ismael, and Isaiah
Sydnor
lead the class and discussed the general question of Muslims and how
Christians should react to them as they are descendants of Ismael
(Abraham's son by Sara's maid) and promised by God to lead a nation. We
mentioned Sydnor iii who was in Afghanistan and involved some with
Muslims and even visited their Mosque there. Here is a

i MIGHT leave class a bit early. Tomorrow is Homecoming at Trinity UMC
in Gastonia where Dad served back in 1958-61, and i'm debating about
going. I just got word about it a few days ago... and their service
starts at 10:30...
2. Scott L had a port inserted a week ago so
that he can begin his chemo this coming Monday. We wish him the best
and continue to hold ALL the Lumadues in our prayers. 3. Chick got some
rather bum news: until he's off certain medication for his stents, he
CANNOT have his hip surgery... So he's back in test-your-patience mode.
4. Got word from Dottie's family that she has moved to Aldersgate! I
haven't yet memorized her exact address, but the general address for
Aldersgate is 3800 Shamrock Dr (15). 5. If i don't forget tomorrow
morning, i'm to stop by our Missions' Ofc and pick up mission bags for
each family in our class. Some of you may have gotten one the other
week after church services, but... if you didn't, you can get yours in

HAPPINESS. TOM had a b'day yest'y :-)2. ...and this coming week, we have several more b'days:

the 21st - ANNE Tue the 22d - HELEN Wed the 23d - KEN and also MARY
KATHERINE 3. On Sun Oct 6th, SYDNOR III received his Captain's
epaulets in a special service at his church in Gastonia. HARRIETTE and
KELLY had the honor of "pinning" them on. (our) SYDNOR was there, too.

That same Sunday, CHICK filled in for Sydnor by teaching the
Fellowship Class. 5. Also on that Sunday, DOTTIE attended CITR
w/daughter SISSY and son-in-law MIKE . They came to hear young RAYMOND
sing w/the Youth Choir (who sang w/the Children's Choir and Trinity
Singers during the service). 6. JOYCE called me last Sat, and we
visited for awhile. BEN III will be at a symposium at the Vatican soon
-- or he may be there now! He will be meeting POPE FRANCIS :-) 7. I
was gonna tell y'all about KEN book about BILLY GRAHAM, but the article
in THE CORNERSTONE this week is much more informative.
HEALTH
1. Over a week ago we got the GOOD news that SCOTT 's surgeon
apparently cut away ALL of the cancer while she was performing the
emergency appendectomy :-) He will need to follow-up w/chemo, 2-3
hrs/day, one day a week, every other week, for 6 months. 2. CHICK will
be having his hip replacement soon and recuperating during November. 3.
MARK posted on fb earlier this week that BARBARA broke one of her
ankles! Just called her to check on things. Her n'bor has had a lot of
foot surgery and has loaned her a scooter which has helped her get
around on the main floor, and she has a wheelchair on the uncarpeted 2d
floor. She will go to a sports med ctr for rehab starting this week.
[she will also let us know if she needs anything]
BBQ
TOMORROW :-) We have a good number of folks signed up for tomorrow's
lunch. I called BETTY an hour ago, and she's in good health, so i'll go
pick her up after SS. [had i told you that she had fallen at the
grocery store the other week, sustaining just a few bruises?] It'll be
good seeing her again :-) My stomach is already rumbling in

Cal led a lively discussion of the Robert Lupton's book, TOXIC CHARITY.
October 13- Reatha continues Proverbs
(Reatha read a Zen Prayer to begin
class. We had 9 people present at first, then got up to 14. Anne gave
health and happiness report including the encouraging words about their
son. Reatha reported on the success of the current packing of meals.
She then contined the lessons on Proverbs and today was on the
influences of the surrounding countries in Biblical writings.

family: older son, who is recuperating
from an emergency appendectomy last week, got word that he has Stage 3
colo-rectal cancer. He and wife sounded
rather upbeat when Anne and Bob talked w/them yest'y -- her b'day. . . . Already talked w/several folks who have
beaten Stage 4, so he's encouraged by that.
As soon as he recovers from the appendectomy, he will begin treatment
for the cancer. I know that Anne and Bob
wish they lived closer -- they are in .
. . -- but we hold all of them close in
our hearts. 2. CONNIE and DURWARD are
out of town this weekend, but you can still sign up (and pay) for our upcoming
BBQ (Sun Oct 20th) this week during class.
[$7/plate] As part of our church's ministry, Connie called TED's son as
follow-up. CHARLES + wife + their two
daughters are in town this weekend, clearing out Ted's house, getting it ready
for the market. They hope to visit our
columbarium tomorrow, too. Charles
expressed his continued gratitude to us for our support and friendship. If you'd like to contact him: ask Retaha or
see this full email. 3. HARRIETTE won't be in class Sunday. She'll be at SYDNOR III's church for a
special service, honoring his promotion to Captain in the Naval Reserves. [gosh - now i'm not sure of the correct
rank... and i erased Harriette's email...]
Since this is a 1st Sunday, "our" SYDNOR usually teaches the
Fellowship Class, but i'm guessing that he'll be in Gastonia as well,
celebrating Sydnor III's promotion. 4.
Got the following email from JOYCE: "What a wonderful surprise --
it was just great to hear from my Ownbey family on my birthday. My small Bible study group in the (condo)
neighborhood had a little party for me (the only Sept birthday) and for three
who had had Aug birthdays. It was on my
day. But y'all are like icing on the
cake. I do so hope you're all doing
well. I play for an older Sunday School
class now. They use the regular material
from Methodist Publishing. They don't
discuss much. So I miss the liveliness
of the Ownbey Class, and I miss all of you.
I'm still settling into my house and will have a garage full of boxes
for quite awhile yet. Fortunately, I
have a large garage -- the builder who developed this neighborhood used it for
quite awhile for an office, so it's carpeted.
I do have a nice music room and am delighted to have my grand after
storing it for so long. Ben III was
invited to preach recently in one of his 4-point charge churches near Asheboro
when he first came back from England many years ago. The Mt.Olivet church was 200 years old, and
Bishop Asbury was there then to ordain the first minister of that church. Since I get to hear Ben so seldom, I drove
up, and it was a delightful weekend. I
believe he and Ann are doing better.
We've all had a tough, sad time. Thanks again for making my day so

Sunday Lou will lead us in discussing Ben Witherington's book, A SHARED
CHRISTIAN LIFE. Our own James Howell says this about the book:
"Imagine a feast set upon a table. Seated on your left is the Apostle
Paul, across from you is John Wesley, and on your right is Ben
Witherington. Picture the host who invited them and you to be nourished
in the life of faith. The fare is rich and filling, precisely the food
we need for the journey." Also this Sunday, i'll be slipping out after i
share our announcements to go next door to teach Genesis Class. This
past Sunday, the sign-up sheet for our BBQ Luncheon began making the
rounds. We have c.15 folks who have signed up thus far w/11 of them
already paying the $7/plate cost. You can sign up this Sunday and the
next (13th) since the date of the BBQ is Sun Oct 20th (12:15pm in
Jubilee Hall).
Anne Buker has shared that she's talked w/Ginny
Soule recently. Not only do Ginny and Wes have birthdays this month,
they have just celebrated their 70th anniversary! If you'd care to send

Reatha
began class with a reading of a blessing she offered recently at a
Reunion of former Faculty of West Charlotte 17 years ago . Timely in
view of the current MLK celebrations. Anne thanked the mystery Visitors
brought by Sydnor and Harriette were Dr Richard and Elaina of the
Cyprus. Anne thanked the mystery baker for the surprise cake recognizing
60 years of marriage as she and Bob were married at Sharon Presbyterian
in 1953.Wilma Miller shared news that her grandson Michael named one
of the 3 finalist of News Cast at 64 University radio stations all over
the country. Uses the handle of Dewey Decimal.Anne asked Cal to comment
on his recent change at UNC Charlotte Cal has moved from an adjunct
relationship at UNC Charlotte as he moves to full time position on
faculty (and continues to practice law). Starts with classes of 191 and
another or 240 and later an MBA class, Masters degree, Paralegal, and
Estate Planning. Anne offered a quote of a writing " May there be peace
within you . . . . . not forget the infinite possibilities that are
born of faith in your self and in others . . . . may you be content
with yourself just the way you are . . . . . let this knowledge . . . .
allow your soul freedom to sing dance and love . . is there for each
and everyone . ." Richard H we were is leaving for Omaha for the trial
of the murderer of his son. Chick getting along better and doing ok, per
Sydnor. Hip surgery delayed.Writeup of Sunday school class in the
current Sunday School brochure being distributed beginning today. Our
choir combines in a performance with the Covenant Presbyterian choir
tonight at their Church. Cal presented a request from Durward for $500
for the Men and Women Shelter to help with food for homeless. (Help
edit, I cannot find an organization called the Men and Women's Shelter.
Could it be the Mens Shelter? http://www.mensshelterofcharlotte.org/)
Committee recommended, Harriette moved and Tom seconded, and the class
approved. Don H gave out 16 two page articles to class members and asked
that couples share with the class next week. The articles are about
people making a difference. Durward moderated the class on the book
titled Last Third of Life. Durward ended the class asking that we write a
letter to some one appropriate addressing five issues: 1>Values
Which I live by 2> How they can find a faith - or a better one
3>Do not go through Life together 4>Develop a life and
career where your passion and needs of others merge.5> and I cant
read my notes for number five, help me Durward . .
August 18, 2013, Dr Hammer does Beatitudes .
Reatha
began class with a reading in honor of William Webb and Ted Bryant
whose funerals were last Saturday and the previous Friday. In addition
Don H read a letter he sent the family where he related the
contributions Ted had made to the class including direction and
installation of the audio visual equipment in the class; Ted financed a
good portion of that project along with other class members. Harriette
related how he regularly sent $200 each year when she raised money by
her run for Diabetes (I think it was). William Web's contributions and
interests were also mentioned.
Chick had 4 stints a
couple of weeks ago and last week had a defibrillator installed. Don
Hammer filled in for Chick in leading the lesson and used the occasion
of the Beatitudes read at William Webb's funeral as the basis of a good
portion of the lesson.

August 4, 2013 Reatha does Proverbs
Reatha opened class by reading a prayer written for Hiroshima Day which
is the 8th. Harriette came by on the way to give a concert in Gastonia
at 3pm in young Sydnor's new church assignment, Myers Memorial. Hymn
Sing at 5:30 today. Reviewed the finacial report by Mary Katherine
again. Reatha continued in leading us in the study of Proverbs. Some of
us asked who wrote them and various answers included David, Solomon, and
the word of God

Reatha opened class with prayer attributed to R.Niebuhr and later Lou
lead a lesson on him and discussed the prayer. Mary Katerine's successes
in Cleveland Ohio Senior games were related as she placed in the top
ten in about a half dozen categories. Anita did well too. MK reported we
have in the treasury and mentioned she is going to Seattle for a tour
of the North west Pacific National Parks over the next two weeks. 23
Signups for the next dinner at Charlotte Cafe. Durward gave dates of
last Sunday October for bbq upstairs and 2nd Sunday in December for
Breakfast. Harriette did a beautiful recital in Aspen and drove 3,600
round trip while Sydnor slept. Parick
and Jimmy have organ concert tonight. Will have Hymn sing next Sunday.
Mentioned Miriam might be visiting us next week. Birthday card sent to
Cal and get well to Chick who had 5 stints last week; hip operation
9/11. Don R told of the commotion brought about by changing seating at
the 8 30 service.Mentioned Linda was at Lake Junaluska at a meeting.Lou
shared the book by R Niebuhr with us concentrating on the epilogue
written after he had several stokes which slowed him down.

Reatha opened class with a reading about how a small drop of water
brings life. She reported the L..... is in Jubliee Hall this week, bring
food contributions.. Next Sunday afternoon an Organ recital and then
the next the Hymn sing with hot dogs. From Reatha before class: Dear

have ELLEN ROBISON lead us in discussing her role as Minister of Worship
and the Arts.3. And speaking of ministers...You've read in recent
editions of THE CORNERSTONE about the new directions our fomer ministers
KEVIN WRIGHT and STEVE JAMES are taking. But had you heard that JOE
HAMBY, who'd been working at the Cokesbury store on Tyvola (which closed
in April), is now working at The Men's Shelter uptown? And BERNARD is
currently in Asbury (out at Aldersgate). At first, my source had told
me that he'd suffered a mild stroke, but it turns out that it's Bell's
Palsy. While he's at Asbury, CAROL (who suffers from Alzheimer's) is
staying w/their daughter in Wilmington (i think it is).4. Our July
birthdays...Th 11th - Fred Th 18th - Ralph Fri 19th - Ace Tue 23d -
Cal (who presented a sprited lesson yest'y, involving
lots of discussion... which will prob lead to a follow-up lesson --
thx, Cal) More H&H to come... not sure just when that will
be! [going up to Amanda's this aft'n to help her clean and prep for the
soon-to-arrive baby.
July 14, 2013 Cal using
the Jim Wallis book ON GOD'S SIDE, and his lesson is entitled "The Good
Samaritan Goes Global." Reatha started class with readings of prayers
and comments of Nelsom Mandela. Also the summer intern spoke of last
night's verdict as "unbearable words." She mentioned that Marion
Hymes might come to class as she is looking for a Sunday School home.
Billy Tobias had a son last week, and Dottie is the mother. Had a good
dinner. Mentioned the effort last week to fill the Emergency Bags (see
last week's notes). Harriette and Sydnor are in Gastonia for son's
first day with his new church. They will be driving to Aspen soon. .
Anne mentioned Fred appreciated the birthaday card signed by many
members of the class. Wilma's daughter is having a hip replacement .
William Webb spent some time in hospital last week and is back at Summit
now. Have curreculum meeting Tuesday night. Wednesday morning Amanda is
to have her new baby. James likes RSV over using NRST, by the way.
Steven Polis age 63 had a stoke recently, he was commissioned to do two
musical pieces for us in recent years.
Reatha's

July 07, 2013 Jubilee Hall Mission Project The
class met with other classes in Jubilee Hall to help prepare Care
Packages and a couple of members went to the Fellowship Class to hear
Sydnor teach a lesson on the three Temples (the
original by Salomon, the next by Herod, and the next by the Muslims). I
have audit recording of Sydnor's lesson at the usual link as well as
some Video. Also audit and video of the class proceedings. One thing I
like they do is $1 bragging whereby people can tell things they want to
brag about or thank people for a dollar. They also have a prayer before
the offering and a formal report of the Health of the group. They
report attendance which was was 22 plus 3 visitors. Sydnor teaches the
first Sunday of each month in Fellowship. On last Wednesday night the
class met at Charlotte Cafe, next there is 2nd Wednesday in August.
Curriculum Committee meets soon.
There was a reference in the church Corenerstone about our class (and
Luther Snyder/Ruth Fisher Class) being some of the folks who helped
assemble 164 UMCOR health kits last Sunday? It was sorta confusing at
first... esp. if you were down at the "far end" of tables (as i was)
where we were simply sorting the myriad of hotel soaps, shampoos,
conditioners, lotions, bath gels, toothpaste... w/the help of very eager
youngsters. [my main job: reading the "fine print" on those hotel
toiletries so the kids would know into which bowl to sort them -- lots
of them were written in gold/silver "leaf" making it really hard to
decifer (even w/my trifocals...)]The "Hang-in-There!" award for our
class goes to ARLYENE :-) I don't know how many kits she
put together, but she was there till almost the "bitter end." A brief
note about the kits. Each one had: 1 handtowel, 1 washcloth, 1
bath-size soap, 1 toothbrush, 1 metal nail file (or 1 pair nail
clippers), 1 (non pocket-size) comb, and 6 (reg-size) Bandaids. Later i
was asking BARBARA about that "funky" number of Bandaids. Here's THAT
scoop: whenever a shipment reaches its destination, there will be
random content checks. If any kit does not have EXACTLY what it's
supp'd to, the entire shipment could be in jeopardy and refused. The
kits we packed will go to Mooresville where EACH ONE will be
doublechecked before being sent on. [the reason we send toothbrushes
but no toothpaste is due to shelf-life: some kits might be stored for
years before being needed]

June 30, 2013 Bob L and Don H lead us in Poetry
Twala led the class beginning with the prayer often attributed to Saint Francis , " Lord, make me an instrument of your peace, Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; More...." It
was reported that Ken and Anne were celebrating their 66th wedding
aniversary in Little Switzerland; Durward, Connie, Cal, and Eleanor
were in the mountains; and Lou and Martha were in Albemarle leaving us
with only about a dozen present. We were honored to have Barbara B with
us. We heard from Anne L that Grace was looking good at the Methodist
Home.. The class on Violence by Don was mentioned as still open and the
Bible Class on God in the Old Vs New Testament by intern Tom Fetter
begins in a couple of weeks. Reminded that the Charlotte Cafe out is
second Wednesday in July and August and next is July 10.. Linda
recently put together information to help users of the Library know how
to do Book Reviews. A copy of her instructions may be found in the
pictures for this date at the link above. Several class members have
done Reviews including Jim H, and we hope to have more. The class was
our annual Poetry Readings by the class with Bob L and Don H leading off
followed by Carol N, Chick T, May K V, and Jim H. II suggested we move
this to another time of year in that we have so many people missing
around the 4th of July. Curriculum Committee is next on July 11.
June 23, 2013 Don H and Jim Discuss the recent Men's Retreat Reatha
started the class mentioning locking her keys in her car this morning
and AAA was there in 20 minutes. A visitor was present. Carol Needy
reported some Gwen/friends were visiting town. We asked about Arlene and
Emily. Don H encouraged folks to take the Violence In America on
Tuesday morning or Wednesday night. Reminded to bring poetry or prose
next week.Wednesday July 10 at 6pm is next Charlotte Cafe outing (oops
same night as Don's Class at 7pm). Bible school finished this week with
over 250 children and adults. The next Curriculum meeting is July 11.
The "lesson" today was a discussion of the Men's Retreat held recently
at Lake Junaluska. Also discussed was the role and status of the Men's
groups at MPUMC in that it appears they are difficult tom get going. 17
people attended the Retreat with 6 from the small groups. The success
of the Women's Groups was discussed too and reasons for the differences.

One thing they'd like us to consider -- those of us who have attended the annual Women's Retreats over the years: why do you think the Women's Retreats have been so "successful"? App. the Men's Retreats have not garnered much interest. Guys, answer me this: wasn't this the first year for a Men's Retreat? Or had they tried in past years only to meet w/little response?
And looking ahead to our lesson on the 30th: Don will return, joined by Bob Lumadue, for our Annual Poetry Session. Each of us is encouraged to bring poem(s) to share Perhaps you like a particual Psalm... in a favorite translation. Or you like an inspirational poem that holds special meaning for you. Or you like a silly poem, recalling that God appreciates joy -- remember: "Isaiah" means "laughter." BTW: Happy (offical) Summer... and enjoy the Super Moon tomorrow night Peace, Reatha - Sat - 1pm
June 16, 2013 Sydnor tells the Benefit of Doubt We
were glad to welcome Sydnor III to our class along with his daughter
Angela and wife Kelly. Sydnor III just returned from a tour in
Afghanistan and will serve as Minister at
Myers Memorial (Methodist) in Gastonia.
Church. Reatha began the class with quotes from Tom Brokaw and Warren
Buffet - Tom: "In pursuit of your passion, always be young; in
relationships with others always be grown up." Warren: "You only have to
do a very few things right in your life so long as don't do too many
things wrong." She mentioned a session by our intern Tom Fifer
Wednesday night on God and whether it is same one in both parts of the
Bible. Don H reported his Tuesday Class is fine but Wednesday needs
some more (people) - for his 6 week study on Violence. Reminded us of
the Adults Plus trip to view the Frescoes in the mountains. Bob and
Anne's son (Scott) is home safely from a recent trip to Istanbul, site
of violent reaction to financial problems of that country. Scott's wife
Becky was at a retreat near the recent raging fires there did not come
near her. They both live near Denver. Jim and Nancy missed as visiting
their son's church today and then viewing a play by their grand daughter
in the early afternoon. Jim and Don H will use the class next week to
share their experiences at the recent Men's Retreat at Lake Junaluska.
In two weeks is the annual Poem session and Don H asked us to be
thinking about content to share. Sydnor's lesson was on the book by
Frank Spencer on Benefit of Doubt (of our religious beliefs). Spencer, a
20-year Habitat volunteer and CEO for recent years, retired in 2010 as
chief executive
of Charlotte-based Cogdell Spencer, a publicly traded health-care real

June 2, 2013 Revelation Part 2 led by Ace (While
the sound was as good as usual in the class room today, for some
reason, the it was lower on the video and audio recordings making it
hard for me to get all the details of class business. Help me complete
if you can. Reatha started class with a quote from Marcus Areies (I will
spell it later), "You have power over your mind not outside events,
realize this and you find strength." We received a thank you for our
$500 Helping Hand gift in February to (please tell me). Summer Sunday
School will consist of a Jubilee Hall Group meeting for most classes at
9:45 and then classes at 9:55. We will follow our own schedule, however,
except for July 7 having to do with First Aid Kits. The Adults Plus!
outing at the McIntosh's is Wednesday June 12 ($5) and
that night is our outing at Charlotte Cafe, sign up for both.
Don Hammer is leading a 6 week class ($10) on "Violence in America-What can I do." on 10-1130 on Tuesday and 7- 830 on Wednesdays
beginning 6/18 and 6/19. Contact Christine or Don to register. Reatha
mentioned my twin grand daughters will graduate from high school in
Cincinnati net weekend and I will be there. We learned that Eleanor
grandson is graduating from ????? and will go to UNC for graduate work
in ??????. Also Cal is to be "full time" as a lecturer at UNC
Charlotte in Business Law. Harriette ran a 5K unexpectedly on Memorial
Day and their son Sydnor is now home. from Afghanistan. Sydnor and
Harriette today celebrate 66 years of marriage
