20170726 Reatha Update . . . . . Hatfields son-in-law leads class . . .

Dear SS Family,
This Sunday, July 30th, NANCY & JIM HATFIELD'S son-in-law, MARC DICKMANN, will come and talk w/us about his new calling:  he's now working w/a local mission group called "For Charlotte."  It are a gospel-based group which is reaching out across the city to bring people together and assist in educating younger generations -- educationally, socially, and spiritually.

You can go to their website -- www.forcharlotte.org -- and get an overview before our lesson, if you'd like.
Peace, Reatha - Wed - 4:30pm

Dear SS Family,

A few more things...

DEBBIE WHITE emailed that her hubby, BILL WALTON, was the photographer who took that great shot of "Sarah and her peeps" which is on the cover of the latest INTERSECTION.  Yet another connection w/our class  :-)

And MARIE PEARCE reminded me that this Sunday will also be the memorial service for Bill.

Peace,
Reatha - Th - 5:20pm

Memorial Service for Bill Pearce will be Sunday,
July 23, at 2:00 pm in Francis Chapel.
The family will greet people in the PLB Lobby, following the service.
Thanks.

20170719 DAVID KIRKPATRICK teaches Sunday 7/23/17

Dear SS Family, 2017-07-19 5:05 PM

This Sunday, Jy 23d, DAVID KIRKPATRICK, son-in-law of class member ARLYENE ARMSTRONG, will lead our lesson.  His topic is THE OTHER WISEMAN -- HOW TO OBSERVE THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.  [since "Christmas in July" occurs next week, i thought this would be appropriate]
He has suggested our singing IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER, which not only ties in w/his message, but should help us think cool thoughts in all this heat!

Hopefully you've gotten your summer edition of the INTERSECTION in your mail over the past few days.  I picked up a copy Sunday (and then got my own in yest'y's mail...)  The front cover shows SARAH SUMNER, surrounded by lots of elem-aged kids on the first day of VBS last month -- Monday was "red" day.  In all that sea of faces, TRISTAN THOMPSON, g'son of HARRIETTE and son of BRENNY, can be seen (tho' part of his face is hidden by a girl's head!)  Second row from front, 2d from the left  :-)

Hope you are finding ways of staying cool.

Peace,
Reatha - Wed - 8pm

Dear SS Family,

Got this info from Marie today.  Don't think an obit has run in the paper yet.
Her mailing address is:

I talked briefly w/B.Barden about how Marie's hip is "doing" and found out that her doctor said she's doing well enough that she can start driving again!

Subject: Death of Bill Pearce

Information for those who knew him:  Bill Pearce died Sunday, July 16.  He had dementia and was at Cuthbertson Village at Aldersgate.  He declined rapidly the last few weeks.  A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, July 23, at 2:00 p.m. in Francis Chapel at MPUMC.  We will greet people in the area in front of the chapel after the service -- no refreshments.  (My mind isn't working -- I can't think what the name of the area is.)

I am getting along fine.  People at Aldersgate have been quite supportive.

Thanks for keeping me informed about things.

Marie Pearce

20170707 Reatha's Update . . . Mary Katherine . . .Eleanor . . Cal . . Chip . . . Ellen . . . Cambodia . . Light Rail Dinner . .

Dear SS Family,

This Sunday, Mary Katherine Vass will lead our lesson w/selected stories from the OT.  Come ready to listen w/"fresh ears."
This Wed night is our next Summer Supper at Light Rail Restaurant (6pm).  Please email me to let me know if you plan on coming... or sign up during class this Sunday.
I know that several of our number are planning trips this month.  Eleanor and Cal are going to Cuba, and you saw in Gaye's update that she and Larry are taking a trip to Alaska!  Any others???
At Chip Billings' request, i got him officially added to our membership.  He was an UNofficial member of Ownbey, so i know he already feels welcome.
Ellen Erickson emailed that we MIGHT be visited by a friend of hers -- at the moment, i'm drawing a blank on her name -- but know that you always keep an eye out for visitors!

Last Sunday, 14 of us were able to go to Francis Chapel to hear Sam Om tell a bit about his faith journey and missionary work in Cambodia.  I know it's hard to stand at a podium (w/a mic) when you want to mingle w/your audience, but it DID make it hard to hear him when he chose to walk around -- and Francis Chapel does NOT lend itself to good acoustics anyway.  One of the things that stuck w/me was that he tore pages out of the Bible he was given to roll his cigarettes -- he would read the page before he smoked it!  In those early days, he was called to translate for a missionary even tho' he was NOT a Christian at the time...
Hope to see you Sunday  :-)Reatha - Fri - 3:30pm

Subject: Hey!
Hey Reatha!
I heard for the doctor today.  He thinks that it is sarcoidosis and can be treated with prednisone.  There are a few things that he wanted to consult with other doctors and will try to get back to me by the end of the week or the first of the next.  So far it looks like we will be able to go on our Alaska trip.  I have a follow up appointment on July 17. Thanks for all the prayers and calls.  Gaye
