June 29, 2014 SS lessons
Reatha lead the lesson using THE WIRED WORD resource, taking the topic of
commencement advice and how that compares to advice from the Bible plus high profile Preachers. No video for the day as I might stop doing that each Sunday; I plan to contimne with the audio recording of the class and lesson. We had about 18 people today. Today was the going away receptopn for George Ragsdale and in Jublilee Hall at noon.

After a more sophisticated endoscopic exam, the doctors said that the
tumor on her esophagus is c.3-in long, but they are optimistic about its
location and plan to use radiation to shrink it and then probably
perform surgery to cut out what's left.
GWEN (ROGERS) POTTER, Carol's sis-in-law, has come down to stay
"indefinitely" to help Molly's husband THOM and their daughter SYDNEY

(Email from Reatha) Dear Ownbey Family, The lesson is by by Chick. He's using THE WIRED WORD resource and is taking the topic of NOAH, the recent Russell Crowe film. If, like me, you didn't see it when it was in theaters, i read the other week that it will be coming out on blu-ray/dvd in late July. Hopefully some of you HAVE seen it, so we can get some lively discussion going (like we did LAST Sunday when Sydnor led the lesson!) And I'll be leading us on the 29th. I, too, will be using THE WIRED WORD resource, taking the topic of commencement advice and how that compares to advice from the Bible Hoping that this finds everyone well despite our run of high temps this past week. June 15, 2014 SS lessons (Lesson Schedule and Birthdays on Left and at bottom) Listen to recording for More details of the class and lesson ! Reatha led the class beginning with an analysis of how various denominations efforts are viewed. We had about 17 people present. Mary Katherine read a letter from the lad we are helping in Libya. Sydnor led a discussion around beliefs and what it means, for example, to be a Christian or a Methodist or of the Chosen Race. A main question raised was if we do not agree with some of the stated beliefs of an organization (such as same sex marriage in the Methodist Church) can we still be a member of the organization. CAL was in class and presented a new motion, amending his from the previous week: he moved that we transfer $1,000 from Gen.Funds into H.Hands. The motion was seconded, there was no more discussion, question was called, and the motion passed (w/ one dissension by Don Redding). MARY KATHERINE has been notified, and she will take care of the paperwork. [BTW: she will be out of town w/family again this Sunday] 4. And remember that HARRIETTE and SYDNOR will be in Pa for the memorial service for her brother who died in February. We were glad to see ARLYENE back in class. - Reatha presided and welcomed Mike Farrell to talk about the Garden Ministry. He thanked the class for the $300 contribution and told us of the background of the Garden and how it is benefiting needy people in our area.
- Harriette's San Diego Marathon was mentioned just as we figured she was just getting into running. Word is that she set a new WORLD Record for women over 90! She finished in about 7 hours and 7 minutes, blasting through the previous record of almost 9 hours.
- Reatha mentioned that we had $1,700.00 in the General Fund instead of the $3,000 as reported last time. Since we voted last time to move $2,000 from the Operating fund to Helping Hands, today we re voted to move only $1,000. Our treasurer was not present, but it appears we now will have about $400 in the Operating account ($1,700 less the $1,000 less the $300 for the Garden Ministry). Don voted against the move primarily for the same reasons as last week - we have other needs such as curtains, books, meals, and other supplies.
- The Poem session was led by Don H and Bob along with contributions from Anne, Durward, Jim, Reatha, Carol and perhaps others I forget.

- Reatha presided and also lead the class in a lively discussion of Prayer in public meetings. We had a report on Health and Happiness including an update of Betty (who has fallen while using her walker) and on Virginia. Reatha mentioned several upcoming events including the Hymns and Hot Dogs Sunday July 27, the 65th Organ Celebration in August, 2014.
- Harriette's article in the Cornerstone was mentioned and Sydnor noted she will be running next Sunday in San Diego Marathon again. Reatha said a list of the names of the women kidnapped in the Middle East was available for our prayer attention; She also noted an up Coming class on Women in Slavery.
- Rev Erman Bradley was a welcome visitor and he shared two poems with us near the end of class. Durward Owen asked for us to sign up for the June Charlotte Cafe Dinner. Next week we look forward to our Poetry Session with Don H and Bob leading; Bob encouraged us to bring readings for the class and noted they do not have to be poetry. We had about 19 people present.
- Don Hammer reported on a Garden Ministry that is short of funds and the class voted $300.00 as a contribution from our Operating funds. In addition, $2,000.00 was approved to be transferred from Operating funds to the Helping Hands fund. An estimate was we have about $2,900.00 in the Operating Account and under $1,000.00 in Helping Hands. In both cases Don Redding dissented. He objected to the use of the Operating funds for the Garden Ministry because it was stated one of the reasons for doing it this way was to avoid going through the Helping Hands procedures. (It was mentioned that there are continuing needs by the Garden Ministry, although we did not commit to any more than the $300.00.) He and several others voted no for the move of funds from the Operating Account to Helping Hands. He felt we were moving too much money into Helping Hands and leaving the Operating funds lower than it should be as we have other needs such as curtains, books, meals, and other supplies.

Had a disappointing 12 people on class today. Excuses considered were that members were helping pack the 2,000 meals in the Hunger Project, illness and recent accidents and sicknesses of regular members, and the conflict with the 9:45 service. Reatha presided. Health and Happines reports included Carol and Don H and Grace. It was mentioned that some members unable to come use the streaming of the Worship Services and Don pointed out we also have viseo and audio of our class on line. Chick continued the Willis book discussing the Common Good and Government. We listed all the things the government does to support us. Check the recording and video.
March 16, 2014 SS lessons (Lesson Schedule and Birthdays on Left and at bottom)
Sunday morn Sydnor led the lesson on another session of the Willis Book as we continue to search for the Common Good. He did Chapter 10 and Chick will do Chapter 9 next week. oops Cal said he was to do that in a couple of weeks. Sydnor asked about all that has gone wrong recently and zeroed in on a couple of industry such as Banking, Hospital, and Charitable Institutions. As most of you know I am not a fan of the Willis book as the author attacks most every institution except religious and publishing. Tom was back after a procedure recently, Sydnor taught even though he received his (last of) kemo treatments recently, And and Bob were back from Dever to see their son who is doing OK. Another small group but lively. Durward was missing with an abscessed tooth. The few of us present enjoyed a spaghetti lunch in Jubilee Hall. We all went home and watched Coach K get another technical for unsportsmanlike conduct .

lesson based on the writings of Rawls and Sandel as they deal w/The Common Good. Remember that DST begins at 2am Sunday morning, so... SPRING FORWARD so you won't be late for SS! Last Sunday, i made a list of our brainstorming which Ace had written on the board, and i had planned to email that to you, but... IF i get that done, it won't be till late tonight. [I've had mtgs, etc, every night this wk] However, i did write them on a flip-chart and tore off the pages, rolled them up, and stored them in our piano bench. I'll bring blue tape tomorrow so we can hang them up for reference/review. FYI: part of the church's SS Handbook tells about the care of white boards. We cannot leave any writing on the board for two reasons: 1. rooms are used by other groups throughout the week, and...2. not erasing any writing will cause it to "ghost" (leaving "shadows" and making the board harder to clean). Here are some points to ponder... before our lesson tomorrow. Our lesson will revolve around how we should engage in political discussion about the Common Good. John Rawls and Michael Sandel have different views about this: RAWLS: Politics has to do w/the Common Good; therefore, in order to respect the "fact of reasonable pluralism," political arguments should be made in terms of "public reasons," that is, in terms open to all reasonable citizens, rather than in religious or moral terms. Religious or secular arguments can be introduced into any political argument, but people who do this should also present what they believe are public reasons for their argument. SANDEL: Many, if not most, hotly contested issues of justice and rights can't be debated without taking up controversial moral and religious questions. A politics emptied of moral engagement makes for an impoverished civic life. It is also an open invitation to narrow, intolerant moralisms. Fundamentalists rush in where liberals fear to tread. Last Sunday, he distributed various articles to those of us planning on being in class tomorrow. For our lesson, each of us will tell the other members about our articles and invite discussion.

The annual Woodcarvers' Showcase is happening at the Marion Diehl Rec. Ctr. on Tyvola. [it also continues on Sunday] I THINK the hours are 10a-4p, but i can't find my newspaper at the moment. But the BIG DEAL today is that our own KEN BUKER is to be honored! [ANNE (and daughter RUTH) have told me that they were told "sometime after 2:00" -- Anne seemed to think there's an hour "window" (2:00-3:00)] Nationally known Master Carver, Tom Wolfe, is also being recognized. Sorry to be getting this info to you at the last minute, but it's been a hectic week here, ending w/my going up to care for Oliver yest'y only to find Amanda had the tummy bug. I visited what I thought was the Wesley class today but after class I learned it had switched classes with the Snyder/Fisher Class.for a larger area for a breakfast. Video of the business portion of Ownbey Class is on YouTube, but the battery ran out before the lesson. A recording of the Snyder/Fisher and Ownbey class are at our usual Audio Link . I will modify these notes as I listen to more of the recording of our Ownbey class. I have not finished yet and your suggestions are needed.
I understand we had a Helping Hands request for $500 for the World Race (see details in Reatha's 2/15/14 email below). Health and Happiness reports on Carol, Janie, Christina and Mel, and Virginia. Don Hammer said the class for next week is about people that make a difference. As done for a previous class , he gave out separate assignments for class members to use to share with the class. Durward gave us a schedule of Socials for year. and I have typed the schedule below.
The Snyder/Fisher Class had about 26 people present and I was the one visitor. The class took a collection then later had maybe 10 people lined up at the podium to give $ money for being able to brag or honor someone or something, somewhat similar to what the Fellowship Class did last week. The lesson was by a Dr Bradley (Not Erman as I expected, he was at the breakfast ) and he talked of Paul and James the brother of Jesus. James, he said , never shaved or cut his hair or bathed, He prayed so much in the temple that he had callouses on his knees similar to a camel and he was called Camel Knees - no kidding, have you ever heard that! Further, he was not much of a believer in Jesus being the son of God until after his death and then he was a main leader of the Christian movement. Class ends at 10:30. Audio here

I visited the Fellowship Class and Reatha did not send an email this week, therefore I do not have all details yet of our class proceedings. I have a recording of the Ownbey class - which I have not listened to yet, after I do I might add to these notes. Feel free to help me with these notes. I understand we approved the Helping Hands scholarship request for the youth from Haiti for a year of $40 a month and a mission trip assistance to Jim Hatfield of $500 to Costa Rica before long. Reatha discussed Water Scarcity from the Wired World - see the Wired Word writeup in our audio link . Please check the audio of the whole class as well as the video. The video got about half of the class before the camera battery ran down; I was not there to replace it so the last part of the lesson is missing.
In the Fellowship Class, they too approved a one year scholarship for the a Haiti youth. Ward Peacock supported it after Dow Baughtnight (sp) made a short presentation and answered questions - something I wish we had done. Barbara Peacock let the lesson.The class collects money from all who do some bragging. I have suggested we do this in Ownbey as it could overcome the reluctance to share good tidings since the money would benefit the treasury - but my suggestion never caught on. They give out nice solid offering plates from the podium and there have a prayer before the offering. They might have a devotional but I was late arriving. Their Health and Happiness Report is done from the podium. They have a formal setup for recording attendance and report to the class on the numbers present. I noticed Marie Eppley there and evidently counted as a member. They had 22 present plus one visitor (me). They report the offering amount and I forget what it was. The lesson was lecture style with questions at the end. They finish at 9:30 vs the Ownbey ending time of 9:35. Go to our Audio files for a recording of their class and lesson if interested.

Positive Health and Happiness reports included an article in the Observer last Wednesday about our "Mr Bob" complimenting his years of a substitute teaching at Province Day. Also Cal Chesson has been mentioned as one of two teachers at UNCC this year named to a special recognition, and Tom Stinson has another of his grandchildren being recognized as an Eagle Scout today (Sunday).
Mary Katherine discussed a Helping Hands contribution for a $480 ($40 a month) commitment for a scholarship for a youth in Haiti. Cal C volunteered to serve on the Committee as did Don R. Cal said that while he would support the request, he felt normal procedures should be followed for requests to to go first to the Helping Hands Committee for review and consideration and recommendation to the class if the committee feels is appropriate. Don Redding agreed and indicated one of the reasons the committee was set up in 2003 was to study requests before recommendation to the class for approval. Harriette volunteered to be Helping Hands Chair last week replacing Cal. Reatha as President and Mary Katherine as Treasurer are ex officio members. The Committee met after class and Mary Katherine presented the Haiti request plus one from Jim Hatfield for $500 for his trip to Costa Rica in April. The requests were approved for recommendation to the class.. Previous comments of Don and Cal were repeated at the Committee meeting.

He sends the following for us to consider: The overriding theme of Jim Wallis' book is: OUR LIFE TOGETHER CAN BE BETTER. Ours is a shallow and selfish age. Self-concern is the personal and political ethic that dominates our world today, and we are in need of conversion. Why? Wallis says Jesus issued a call by announcing the Kingdom of God on earth. And with it, he asked for a new order of living: that the better way of life was meant to benefit not only his followers, but everyone else. Think about the following question and perhaps share your answer with the class on Sunday. Q: What does it mean to you personally to "love thy neighbor"? Tell the class of any specific instances in your life where you loved your neighbor -- not just the neighbor who lived in your homogeneous neighborhood, but another human being who was different from you -- another person who needed your help -- a person who, when you got involved, made your life inconvenient, but meaningful. Also remember that this is Boy Scout Sunday. Perhaps you picked up a SCOUTING FOR FOOD grocery bag last Sunday to fill w/food and bring back THIS Sunday. Even if you didn't get an "official" bag, you can still bring items (which will be given to LOAVES AND FISHES). I saw a blurb in the paper, saying that this year they especially need: canned meat, canned pastas, canned fruit, cereal, and 100% fruit juice. And Mary Katherine will explore the possibility of our class sponsoring the education a child (or children) in Haiti. This Sunday and next an information table about said topic will be set up in the PLB lobby. Peace, Reatha RE: helping my neighbor... Just last night i helped a stranger while at Charlotte Cafe`. An elderly couple had finished their meal and were preparing to leave. The gentleman was having trouble getting out of the booth -- trying to push down on the table w/his left hand while managing his cane w/his right. I went over and offered my assistance. Turns out the best solution was for me to hold his cane while he pushed down on the table w/BOTH hands! I then gave him back his cane so he could proceed to the cashier. Just a small thing -- really NOT an inconvenience as suggested above...

Curriculum Committee meeting on Thursday night January 15, 201 - Don Hammer reported the Committee discussed the Status of the Ownbey Class in context of where we should go with the Curriculum. We (have) adopted the theme of the Common Good. He asked do you feel people now are focused on self more so than in the past. Several people agreed, most said nothing. We are going to do some more classes on a book by Jim Wallers. For example, it is not whose side is God on, it is are we on God's side..
On the Status of the Ownbey class, Don H reported on issues discussed at the Curriculum Committee Meeting: (a) Attendance - We had 23 that day (Sunday 1/19/2014), more than usual. DonH said it is discouraging to the teachers to prepare for only a few people. Ace said however, he did not care if there were only 10 people present, he learned a lot out of the preparation making it worth the effort.
(b) Health - Ann L said there were many people on the roll who are unable to attend even if transportation is available; also if attendance is our biggest problem we need to recruit. Don H said we do have many members who visit members who cannot come.
(c) Involvement- DonH used as an indicator of that (involvement) the $$ in two treasuries in the Class (Operating) account and Helping Hands Funds and is just sitting there. No one has the incentive to spend much of it and we should be doing something with it..
(d) Leadership- Here we are, DonH said, with the same slate of officers as we had in 2013 in 2014. To emphasize his point, he asked Reatha if she wanted to be president in 2015, and she said definitely not. Don said Lou and Chick, previous Nominating Committee chairs, said folks would say they did no want to have to show up 52 weeks in a row. Lou said they would say they had served already. Don H. said he has served as president two times plus chair of the Curriculum Committee for 10 years.
(e) Action- DonH asked What kind of actions should be taken to resolve this . . Don R asked who had not been President, no one raised their hand. .Chick said some had been President twice. Chick said, instead of an elected president, that we fall back to having monthly presiding officers, or whatever want to call it, so don't have to be here 52 weeks as some other classes do. In some (such classes), Don H said, the monthly president is responsible for Curriculum and that may or may not work well. He heard of a leader in another class asking "will you teach our class," " yes what you want me to teach about," " whatever you can." That might lead lead to no theme involved. Ace said he wanted Don H to be chair of Curriculum Committee til he died. Don H said he felt like a marked man!
Lou said, on dissatisfaction with various officers, as Nominating Committee Head, he never received complaints about the quality of the leadership and what have you, but he heard (reasons for not serving such as ) were out of town a lot, will do this or that, but I already done it; well we all have Lou added. For positions such as the Curriculum Committee if we have some one that is is good like Don (H) and has interest in it and has real intellectual capacity and thinks on behalf of class and church, we work them to death. Chick suggested we look at the slate of officers and figure out . . . and said we don't need a VP, just fills in for president. He said we tried a marketing program that did not work as people want to be with their own age group and situation.
Chick mentioned that just that day he had a conversation about merger with Dennis Myers from the next door Genesis class who said they had so few it would make more sense to join our class. Genesis would be younger but Dennis did not think that would be a problem. Harriette asked why we do not go over and ask them (laughter). Durward said we should not ignore Harriette's suggestion. Durward said he had conversations with members of that class before, and they never showed an interest. Don R said maybe we should join their class. Chick said they were smaller. Reatha said she was a charter member of that class; when she taught it recently, there were 4 people present..
Reatha added that there is a Sunday School Committee that addresses Sunday School issues across the Church, the issue of the 9:30 services effect on Sunday Schools, and looking at signs across the church, and need for maps (and other issues . . . ).
Don H said he thinks we need a Presidential committee to look at a number of issues with people volunteering to be on it, if the president agrees. .Lou suggested a questionnaire and Don R said it had been a long time since we did that.
Mary Katherine said she participated in various activities that were meaningful and well organized. Care Teams are organized in meetings discussing who does what and when and if cannot get replacements. The Care Team is headed by a Church Staff member as is the Lay Reader program and we could get help from the Church Staff and maybe Barbara could give review and get (us) better organized to address (I think she said) in the type of problem we identify. DonH said Barbra does come to our Curriculum meetings.
Chick mentioned we have 8 teachers and each will teach 2 times a quarter.. Don H said some (lessons) will be two parts such as one coming up by Ace and maybe the Gun class so pay attention to the schedule that Reatha posts on our web site. Benediction . . .Amen
