Webb CHARLOTTE - Charles William Webb (Bill), 90, died August 12, 2013. A
memorial service in celebration of his life is scheduled for Thursday, August
15, 2013, 11am at Myers Park United Methodist Church, with the family greeting
friends in Jubilee Hall following the service. When double vision at age 84
forced Bill to retire from playing tennis with his treasured Bad News Bears, he
muttered, "I could still play, but the guys won't let me use two
racquets!" That ability to find some humor in a situation was
quintessential Bill. He was born in Spartanburg, SC, September 7, 1922, to Carl
R. Webb and Elizabeth Hutchens Webb. Bill grew up in Shelby, NC, graduated from
Shelby High School and from the McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He
interrupted his college work at UNC-Chapel Hill to join the U.S. Navy during World War II, and completed his degree in
mathematics after the war. During his Navy service aboard the USS Herndon, the
ship escorted President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Yalta for the historic conference
with Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Russia's Josef Stalin. Following the
war and the completion of his bachelor's degree, Bill married Sara Newton of
Shelby; and began his long career in financial planning and insurance. His
Charlotte general agency, C. William Webb and Associates, led the Pilot Life
Insurance Company in production for many years. When he retired, he formed a
consulting firm using the same name, working with small, closely-held firms
across the country, in Canada and in England. Priorities were always very clear
to Bill: faith, family, service to his clients, and giving back. He loved Myers
Park United Methodist, where he served on several boards and taught Sunday
School for many years. He was a committed Stephen Minister and headed the
church's program. Bill was also a member of Myers Park Baptist Church, where he
team-taught three-year-olds, much to the delight of both teacher and children.
Bill's family was paramount with him. He was very proud of his three sons, and
of his stepdaughter. His time with them was very important to him. He mourned
the death of his first wife, and in time, married happily again. Much of Bill's
call to giving back was invested not only in his churches, but also in the
Charlotte community. He served on the boards of the Charlotte Symphony and the
Charlotte Opera. He jokingly asked a former Symphony conductor if he could play
an instrument in an upcoming concert, and the sardonic answer was,
"Well.maybe the triangle" Bill enjoyed singing, loved to dance,
pursued painting and photography, and was devoted to sports (both participating
and watching). Museums, theater and travel were highlights of his leisure time.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his half-brother, Carl, and his
first wife. Surviving him and treasuring their memories and experiences, are
his wife of 31 years, Linda G. Christopher; his three sons, Charles of New
York, David (Nancy) of Connecticut, Stephen of Florida; his stepdaughter and
son-in-law, Elizabeth Christopher and Vincent Scarlata of San Francisco. He is
also survived by David and Nancy's two daughters, Hillary and Adelaide. In lieu
