Kevin Wright taught the (03/18/12) lesson from TOXIC CHARITY - HELPING THE POOR WITHOUT HURTING THEM , a book by one active in Habitat. . . .Here are parts of a review from the Internet: If you’re not sure you’ll read ... the .... book in full, I want to at least have you consider Lupton’s proposed “Oath for Compassionate Service” -- modeled on the Hippocratic Oath of the medical profession. If you have a hand in leading any sort of ministry to poor people, or ever participate in such ministries, these are great principles to keep in mind as you do so. If you discover dissonance between these principles and the realities you experience, that may just be the impetus you need to pick up and read both When Helping Hurts and Toxic Charity. Here is the six-part oath:
20120916 Jim Talks about Toxic Charity
20131020 Cal talks about Toxic Charity
20120318 Toxic Charity all three sessions
Future lessons:
Mar 25 CONTRACEPTION, CHRISTIANITY, AND THE CONSTITUTION, led by Ace Walker
Apr 01 --SAINTS AND VILLAINS, by Denise Giardina, led by Chick. 12 of 12 people
found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into one of great theologians of century This is a heavily biographical novel about Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a noted German theologian and martyr. This book gives significant insight into Bonhoeffer's personality and to the events that shaped him. It also paints a grim picture of the onset of World War II and the mentality of Germany and England at the time. This book shows Bonhoeffer's human side as well as...

- Never do for the poor what they have (or could have) the capacity to do for themselves
- Limit one-way giving to emergency situations
- Strive to empower the poor through employment, lending, and investing, using grants sparingly to reinforce achievements
- Subordinate self-interests to the needs of those being served
- Listen closely to those you seek to help, especially to what is not being said -- unspoken feelings may contain essential clues to effective service
- Above all, do no harm

Apr 08 (Easter) -- Adult Bible Series, led by Sydnor Apr 15 -- Letter To A Man In The Fire: Does God Exist And Does He Care by Reynolds Price, led by Gaston. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Guide. As one who watched his own father, a retired minister, die a horrible, lingering death this past year after 15-year battles with cancer, heart disease and diabetes, I found Mr. Price's "Letter" to be both thought-provoking and helpful in my own search for answers to the questions posed in the book's title -- more helpful than my re-readings of Ecclesiastes and...
