Hi Ownbey Folks (06/25/2010)
Been a while since a MESSAGE has been emailed. Willard, as he is wrapping up his work at Habitat, asked me to help with drafting one and here is what we have.
1> Addresses
As Reatha shared with you recently, we have an address change for Arlyene:
x.x.x.x.x
You can get all address info at links on our Blog or directly at
http://www.donredding.com/ownbey/classroster.pdf
Username /password needed. Remember them as we might have a test.
We are still asking for wedding anniversary dates if you want to share. Some of us missed that the Rasberrys celebrated their 50th until we saw the flowers in the Sanctuary in their honor.
2> Lessons, celebration, and cake.
We have had fine lessons over the last few weeks, and we are looking forward to Cal Chesson's lesson Sunday 6/27. The subject has changed slightly to "God and Country." No book, he will speak from his "research" so we do not need to do any homework!
Thanks to Cal and Eleanor for the cake in celebration of Harriette's successful marathon run recently. Harriette, we are sorry you could not join the party in your honor, but we have plenty of pictures of all of us enjoying your cake. Check the following links and pay particular attention to Harriette's image on the cake. Eleanor was worried it would not pass the censors. (As always, let Don know if any pictures or info should be removed.)

Chick was the speaker that day (6/20/2010), and we had a good discussion including the importance of Constantine in the spread of Christianity. Someone suggested we would not be sitting here today talking about Christianity if it were not for Constantine (and someone added, maybe Paul).Chick was having fun we could tell as he shared about his younger days entering and winning singing contests with Sydnor egging him on. He also told of mistaking baby Jesus for a light bulb in a play - you had to have heard him to appreciate the mood. Unfortunately we did not get a recording of the frivolity but perhaps that is better.

A video has the same pictures as the Harriette Celebration above, but the audio has Chick's opening comments about Constantine. Also includes Chick singing a few notes. Click on the picture of Chick above or Click here or go to

3> Flags
And if, over the last few weeks, you did not get an American Flag, or the booklets (on the Flag Code, the Christian Flag, the Methodist Flag and Flame) get Sunday or let me know if we run out, and I will make more. Also, we will have Christian Flags for everyone Sunday and more American flags as we approach the 4th. There remain some photos for people who were at our our flag day celebration so pick them up also.

After we discussed the Flag Code and mentioned the Christian Flag, some one suggested we consider getting flags for our room. If we do, I think it should not be from the class treasury.A couple of people offered to contribute so far. Let us know if you have a preference and we can discuss later. Several other class rooms have both the American and Christian flags, and the Wesley class says the pledge to the American flag AND to the Christian flag each Sunday.
Here is Wesley class:

Click Here for an article presenting both sides and a middle ground to having flags in a sanctuary. Click here for the article mentioned by Reatha Saturday in which the writer is opposed to the flag in the sanctuary.

Flag Day and Health and Happiness
Subject: Ownbey "stuff" Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2010 16:55:48 EDT
From: Reatha Andrew To: Class
Dear Ownbey Family,
With this being FLAG DAY, and our talking about flag etiquette and stuff yest'y in class -- thanks to DON REDDING -- I've been trying to track down when the American and Christian flags were removed from our sanctuary. Don said that James said that they've not been in there since He's been at MP...
I emailed JULIAN... and he replied that he also can't remember their being in the sanctuary except for special occasions -- like Scout Sunday -- when there was always discussion about which flag went on which side...
I emailed KEITH FORTIER since he's on the Altar Guild, and tho' he didn't know, he thought that NANCY PRYOR might recall. So I called Nancy, but she's at the beach this week; tho' LARRY is going down there tomorrow, and he'll try to remember to ask her.
HEALTH AND HAPPINESS
1. We were glad to have JUDY STINSON back w/us yest'y after recent eye surgery -- I think it was a cornea transplant, right? That's something that you don't just "bounce back" from...
2. RICHARD HARRISON, who sings w/me in CITR and is in Thurs. Bible study w/some of you, has been ill for almost two weeks -- started as a cold, moved into his chest, then he felt better last week so he came to B.Study, developed a tummy virus on Saturday, stayed home again yest'y... He FINALLY went to the doctor today to learn that he has "walking" pneumonia. He's now on an antibiotic so should be rebounding pretty soon.
VISITOR
We were glad to have JAYNE TAYLOR visit our class again, altho' talking w/her after class, I found out that she's hunting a more Bible-based class than ours, so we may not be seeing her in class much anymore.
CONGRATULATIONS
And we were happy to learn that HARRIETTE THOMPSON completed that marathon out in California in six+ hours. I can't even begin to imagine that type of competition! Way to go, Harriette!
Stay cool, everyone,
Reatha - Mon - 4:40pm
