20110411 Administrative Board

Several Ownbey members of the Board were present and perhaps will elaborate Sunday.

Subjects: Hymn in honor of  Cissy and  Doris, Harris Teeter building/parking lot, bikers' parking, application for 2013 sabbatical for Senior Minister, summer intern, budget, and attendance results


We will have  representatives at a government hearing on the Harris Teeter building as it is going to be high and block the view of our church some; also, H T asked about letting employees park in our lots. We were reminded of the generosity of  the owners of the land in letting us park there for years without formal agreements making it hard for us to object to anything. Several community groups are objecting.

A recent incident when a policeman encouraged bikers to leave our parking  lot was mentioned as an example of that continuing issue.

Application will be made to Lilly Company for $50,000 grant for our minister to study theology and music in Europe with concentration on Chopin. MPUMC would receive $15,000. The  application is for 2013 (may-June) when James' children will be out of High School. Whereas the Lilly Company hopes the minister will remain at the sponsoring church a year after; it was noted the Methodist Church policy on moving ministers cannot assure that.

The financial condition was discussed with a couple of million dollars in the Bank and pledges up, collections up, and expenses down.

Stephen Ministers are  encouraging new members in the lobby and hallways today and other ways.
On class, we sang Happy Birthday to Harriette and told her the flowers in Sanctuary in her honor were beautiful, Jack thanked the  ones responsible for the  rearrangement of the Bulletin Board (Janie, Mary Katherine and Christina), reported that Nhora has agreed to serve as co treasurer with Carol D (Wilma asked to be replaced because of her recent health issues). Reatha reported on a recent meeting of  Sunday School leaders and said we would soon get a survey; also, a housekeeping suggestion  that we clean the White Board each week to prevent permanent shadows. Reatha reported on Health and Happiness, Don Hammer said Carol D was back in the hospital during the week, Judy is progressing but still in pain, We heard about Ellen Chason and some members plan to visit.Reatha's daughter is doing well and expects baby in June. Lou discussed Reconciliation from a book by two Duke graduates including the question is the world better because of Jesus. The class was encouraged to attend a session on Reconciliation Tuesday night. (Unfortunately few of us went; it was a good and meaningful session.) The Curriculum Committee meets April 12 at 7 p.m. in room 107. All are welcome, I assume as that has been case in the past.
