Subject: Sunday's Discussion

In preparation for Sunday's discussion ("Contraception, Christianity and the Constitution") please give some thought to the following:

        1.      What is to be said for family planning and contraception as a purely social issue?

        2.      Does the Bible have a message for us about birth control?  If so, what is it?

                (a)     What are the implications for us today of  Genesis 1:28?

                (b)     What lesson is being conveyed by the story of Onan in Genesis 38: 8-10?

                (c)     Where in the New Testament is birth control addressed?

        3.      Is religious opposition to the pill a broadly Christian position?

        4.      Does the requirement that insurance companies provide contraception coverage without copay place a substantial burden on  the religious freedom of those who believe that the use of contraception is a mortal sin?

        5.      Does the U.S. government have a "compelling" (i.e., vital or significant) interest in providing free contraception coverage to insureds?

        6.      Is there a way to accomplish the objective of providing generally available contraception help that is less intrusive on the religious freedom of  devout Catholics?
