Lesson: for September 2nd and 9th 2012 by Chick
Socrates- his religious convictions, his life and death

Chick led a lively discussion of Socrates'  background and beliefs on 9/2. On 9/3 he will cover the trial of Socrates. This is interesting stuff folks and I personally am so pleased we are doing it, thanks Chick. As you see in the write-up below, we have for maybe 50 years said we use the Socratic method in our class, and I have wanted to understand them better. Several of our members have expressed the same interest. If you did not make the class on 9/2, please be there 9/9;also, listen to the audio of the class (click here) . The videos on Smugmug cover snippets and are not complete. During the discussion on Socrates, Rev Bradley earned $25  by saying the 10 Commandments from memory and gave it to Helping Hands.

Following was sent to Ken Garfield about our sessions on Socrates.
Ownbey Class Promotes Socrates and the Socratic Method of Teaching.
  • The Ownbey Class is one of the oldest and most unique Sunday School classes at Myers Park United Methodist Church. It boasts several features that separate it from the rest.
  • One of its most important features is the Socratic method of teaching, which  encourages discussion, led by a moderator, who is knowledgeable of the subject matter and experienced in leading discussions. Rather than lecturing or expressing his or her opinions, the moderator poses questions to class members for discussion. This ensures a lively and diverse exploration of the topic at hand and at the same time, expands their Christian beliefs.
  • This questioning method that encourages discussion was developed by Socrates in Fifth Century Athens and the Ownbey Class will be taking a closer look at Socrates, his religious convictions, his life and death through two Sunday’s of discussion on September 2nd and 9th at 9:45 am in Room 110. Anyone interested in attending is invited.
  • Book Description

    October 13, 2011
A brilliant portrait of the Greek philosopher who personified philosophy.
Socrates was undeniably one of the greatest thinkers of all time, yet he wrote nothing. Throughout his life, and indeed until his very last moment alive, Socrates fully embodied his philosophy in thought and deed. It is through the story of his life that we can fully grasp his powerful actions and ideas.
In his highly acclaimed style, historian Paul Johnson masterfully disentangles centuries of scarce sources to offer a riveting account of a homely but charismatic middle-class man living in Athens in the fifth century b.c., and how what this man thought still shapes the way we decide how to act, and how we fathom the notion of body and soul. Johnson provides a compelling picture of the city and people Socrates reciprocally delighted in, as well as many enlightening and intimate analyses of specific aspects of his personality. Enchantingly portraying "the sheer power of Socrates's mind, and its unique combination of steel, subtlety, and frivolity," Paul Johnson captures the vast and intriguing life of a man who did nothing less than supply the basic apparatus of the human mind.
Class September 9, 2012 Jim began with a prayer and reading from Jesus Calling ("Learn to enjoy Life more."). He read an endearing  thank you note from Madeleine Stanford for the missing you note from us. Don mentioned that Rev Erman Bradley won $25 for saying the 10 Commandments last week (he subsequently asked us to give to our Helping Hands); Don reminded folks that the offer continues open to win  money for the recital of the 10 Commandments ($25),  Books of Bible ($50) including Apocrypha (10), etc. We have had 10 people say the Books of the Bible and Erman is the only one to say the 10 Commandments. Class September 2, 2012
Jim began with a prayer and reading from Jesus Calling ("I am yours for all eternity . . .").  We were glad to see Ann Copeland back with us. Guests included Kelly Thompson ( daughter in law of Harriet and Sydnor). Younger Sydnor is in Afghanistan serving as a Chaplain  for about a year. A  guest also was Rev Erman Bradley and we were glad to have his contribution to our discussion on Socrates.During the discussion on Socrates, Rev Bradley earned $25 by saying the 10 Commandments from memory. Cal presented the recommendation of the Helping Hands Committee that the class approve a contribution to the YWCA in support of the Carol Douglas empowering Program. It was moved, seconded, and approved. Don H had available an analysis reflecting that 56% of members who are regulars come to class recently. Reatha reported  the Care Team for Dotty who is now home and next weekend Larry is getting married out of time. We are helping a couple of times a week,  Also encouraged us to visited William Webb at Summit; his 90th birthday is soon.
