Operation: The committee is made up of five class members. The president and the treasurer are ex-officio members.

After investigation, the committee will review the information and determine if the project is appropriate for the Ownbey Class. Qualifying service opportunity will be presented to the class for their approval.

Dear Ownbey Family,

Even though Wing Haven's Gala on Saturday May 16th has caused us to move our class Garden Party, it DOES afford us the opportunity THAT NIGHT to attend the Nova Voce concert at 8pm. (They are also singing at 4pm on Sunday May 17.)

Mary Katherine Vass is a member of this great group and has tickets available for $10. For more info, you can call her at 704-........ (She, along with some others from our class, WILL NOT be in class this week. The Woman's Choir is singing in the 9:45 service.)

Hope to see the rest of you in class. And for those of you who'll be out of town, we wish you safe passage.

Peace,

Reatha - Fri - 10:15am

Dear Ownbey Family, It's been a busy week for some of our class members: >WILMA MILLER and JOYCE ALLEN not only share a birthday, but this past Wed. they shared a surgery date -- only one hour apart -- AND the same eye doctor performed BOTH cataract surgeries! When I called them this afternoon, both Wilma and Joyce said that they are doing well. >I began calling folks after hearing the message which ELLEN CHASON left on my machine today: this past Thurs, she took another fall -- this time at Southminster -- chipping a front tooth and splitting her lip. She now has an "implanted" front tooth and stitches... but NO broken bones this time :-) She will NOT be in SS tomorrow, nor next week. This Wed, she'll fly down to Florida to see one of her grandkids graduate from pharmacy school. She'll be flying back home on Sun. May 3. >I also called CAROL NEEDY who had sent me an e-mail about getting the stitches and pins out of her feet: surgery on her foot problems. went well UNTIL... the stitches and pins came out. Now her feet have swollen and have caused her lots of pain. Her doctor has told her to stay at home w/her feet up for several days. Her next appointment will be in a few weeks unless the swelling/pain continues. We hope to see her back in church soon. >And I even called Marilea GROGAN. Medication has rid her of atrial flutter, but GARY's meds are still a challenge -- the doctors are still trying to get the balance "just right." BOB will find out on May 6th if he will need surgery on his aorta from the left ventricle. Marilea quipped: "This coming week, we have SEVEN doctor appointments. If it weren't for those, we'd have very little social life!" >I have not heard any update on Harlan. >I've heard from only about 20 e-emails (or 30 total people) as far as a straw vote for our garden party. REMEMBER: press REPLY and let me know your preference. * Sat. May 23d * Sun. June 7 * either date * neither date Thanks! Reatha

04/22 Wing Haven Party Change

Dear Friends, We've run into a snag with our proposed class Garden Party. Harriette has discovered that Saturday. May 16 is the same day as the Wing Haven Gala. They will be working on that, and it wouldn't be any fun for us to go around the garden then. So, she checked with them about having our SS garden party and Wing Haven tour on the following Saturday. (May 23), and that date is fine. [However, Memorial Day weekend is "observed" then, so that might affect some of our class.] Harriette then checked on Sunday. June 7 -- that date is also OK w/Wing Haven. So... I'd like to take a straw poll: which date works for you? Saturday, May 23d? Sunday, June 7th? Either one? Simply press REPLY -- NOT "reply all" -- and let me know. We will also discuss this on Sunday, but I'd like to have some numbers ready before then. And remember that we will also be "saying goodbye" to the Baxters, whichever date we choose. [I've already checked and either date is OK w/them.] The party will be at Brenny and Karen Thompson's at 300 Ridgewood Avenue, next door to Wing Haven. We are planning for everyone to come at 3PM. Brenny is on the board and has access to the garden. [Harriette has cleared both dates w/Brenny as well.] Check your calendars and send me your straw vote. Thanks, Reatha - Wed

Reatha Andrew wrote: (abbreviations edited by don) Dear Ownbey Family, For those of you who were in SS Sunday, you heard Syd say that Harlan had called him Saturday, saying that he and his sons were up at Lake Junaluska. NOT THE CASE. [I saw Susan Mobley as we were both leaving church today.] As we know, Harlan has been VERY confused/disoriented since his fall the other month. Late yesterday, even with a caretaker in the house, he managed to get out and wander over to a neighbors. He was re-admitted to CMC last night. David and Tim are now exploring "care" facility options. I asked Susan if we could help in ANY way, and she said that PRAYERS are our only course right now -- prayers for Harlan and his health, and prayers for his sons as they struggle in finding the best resources to care for him. ON ANOTHER NOTE: Harriette announced Sunday that the Baxters are MOVING BACK TO SOUTH AFRICA! The Baxters were in class, and Gerald elaborated: the move is TEMPORARY, but when they DO move back to NC, they will MOVE TO DURHAM to be near their son. So... we are going to have a BYE-BYE (GARDEN) PARTY for them on Saturday, MAY 16th. More info will follow but wanted you to mark your calendars now. added by Don: The Baxters' current address and telephone number and South African address are at the following link: (ask don for current ID and password - they change) http://www.donredding.com/ownbey/class.html Peace and Blessings, Reatha - Mon - 5pm
