  • Lesson: led by Barbara B on Waiting and Patience. First she reported on Mark - Mark’s Birthday is today and yes he did decorate for Halloween, probably the most extensive decoration in Surry and  Yadkin County and maybe more close by. Mark is encouraging First Methodist Church Elkin in  recycling as the air condition went bad last year in his church and he took all the pieces which were going to be hauled off and turned them into an art form of an UFO with thrusters and fog coming out. Barbara met with Curriculum Committee and was happy to volunteer to teach this, her favorite Book. Seven Spiritual Gifts of Waiting: Patience, Loss of Control, Living in the Present, Compassion, Gratitude, Humility, Trust in God .    Link to recording is here and below and is good listening and discussion of the book. Next Week:  On the Road with Jesus: Birth and Ministry by Dr. Ben Witherington III, and we will use the new DVD/video setup - led by Gaston.

20111023 Men in Christ Meeting with Bishop Goodpaster

Today Chick had a good lesson , James a good sermon, Phil a good lunch, panthers a good game, and Goodpaster a good talk.

You might be interested in the audio of tonight's meeting with  Bishop Goodpaster.  He sat at table with Bob and me and we enjoyed that. Next meeting is February 19, Rev Jeremy Troxler.

The audio is his whole "address" on THE  great commission, and he talked about we men need to go -  teach  -  remember. The link to audio is below

Jim's  name was mentioned before I started the recording, sorry I did not get that.

Wish we had thought to mention the meeting to Ownbey SS. Maybe we  can remember to get that done on class in future

With both Christmas and New Year's falling on Sundays, we felt that we would NOT meet on Christmas, and probably not on New Year's, but would like to ask for YOUR input. How do you feel in our NOT meeting for two Sundays running? And IF you think we SHOULD meet either or both of those days, would YOU be willing to lead the lesson(s)? You can begin emailing me your ideas, and we will also discuss this in class over the coming weeks.

Another point brought up by Carol N in class today: w/only one svc offered each holiday Sunday, we'll want to get into the sanctuary as early as possible...

20111016 Baptism vs Christening

Baptism vs Christening

In the discussion of baptism vs christening, it is important that one understand that traditionally one event is always a religious ceremony, while the other may or may not have a religious connotation. Baptism is the infant ceremony that is always religious and has its ties to ancient Christianity and even Judaism. Christening on the other hand, while it may be religious, can also be performed as a non-religious naming ceremony.
Infant baptism, although a Christian ceremony, is not practiced by all denominations. Those denominations that practice infant baptism are the more orthodox such as Roman Catholic and the Protestant denominations, such as Lutheran, Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist, just to name a few.

There are Protestant denominations that do not practice infant baptism; such as, Baptists, Pentecostals, Mennonites, Amish, and most non-denominational churches. The Latter-day Saints and Jehovah’s Witnesses also reject infant baptism.
The question of baptism vs christening can be a dilemma for those who belong to a church that does not practice infant baptism or christening. Many of these churches then offer parents the opportunity to have an infant dedication. This is usually a small ceremony that does not involve water, thus removing the connection to baptism. The purpose is more a dedication to the Lord and to present to infant to God, based on a vow from the parents to raise the child in a manner that agrees with the church’s teachings.
For those parents who want to celebrate the birth of their child in a public manner, without having any type of religious connotations, then the Naming Ceremony might be the perfect answer. There are non-religious officiants who will conduct a special ceremony that will publicly “name” the baby and introduce him or her to the world. The ceremony can also allow the parents to make their own promises of care and protection for their child.
There really isn’t any such thing as baptism vs christening. Historically a “christening” was considered a naming ceremony, while baptism was definitely religious. Nowadays, baptism and christening are the same, and are definitely “Christian”. However, for those parents who do not want a Christian ceremony for their child, then they have the option of a christening, based on the original intent of the ceremony which was to name the child.

20111014 Reatha Update

Dear Ownbey Family, Those of us in SS last week were pleasantly surprised to find a wall-mounted tv/dvd screen. Turns out that we have DON HAMMER to thank for that! He gave it in memory of CAROL One slight glitch: it was hung a bit low -- its bottom edge aligns w/the bottom edge of our whiteboard. In checking w/RON, i found that if we raise it, a rather large hole for the cables, etc, will be visible. However, what's worse: seeing a hole or NOT seeing the screen unless you are on the front row? We'll see what Ron can work out. Speaking of Don H... there was still no update yest'y from the church on GEORGE's condition. Also, if you try to contact Don via email, your message will probably bounce back. His mailbox is understandably overquota at the moment.I sent you word about GASTON's cataract surgery but forgot to add that he has a NEW e-addy I think that's all for now.Peace, Reatha - Friday

Marriage family focus

By Estes Gould - ASHEVILLE — Walking hand in hand with their three children, Lupe Perez and Monroe Moore made their way to the Asheville Register of Deeds office to ask for a marriage license. That was the point — the couple was one of 20 to participate in the We Do Campaign, protesting state laws that ban such marriage. article icon Full Story

20111013 Reatha Update

Dear Ownbey Family,
Before leaving the church after preschool yest'y, i checked to see if they had an update on GEORGE HAMMER;
they had not, but I did get the news that JOHN SILLS (Fellowship Class) had died. DON R. sent me word
that GASTON had had cataract surgery on his left eye -- that's the reason he was not in class
last Sunday. And LOU informed me at our Curric. Mtg. that JANE G had suffered the loss
of a cousin, also in the past week. I'll be sending a list of upcoming lessons next.
And i'll be checking w/those who weren't at the meeting as to when/what they'll be able to teach.
Peace,Reatha - Th - 5:45am

Class Notes (10/09/2011) Lesson led by Ace on the new marriage constitutional amendment (proposed).
  • A new LCD Screen and DVD Player were in the room for first time, and the LCD appears permanently attached. No one claimed responsibility.
    • image Dear Ownbey Family, Those of us in SS last week were pleasantly surprised to find a wall-mounted tv/dvd screen.  Turns out that we have DON H  to thank for that!  He gave it in memory of CAROL  One slight glitch:  it was hung a bit low -- its bottom edge aligns w/the bottom edge of our whiteboard.  In checking w/RON, i found that if we raise it, a rather large hole for the cables, etc., will be visible.  However, what's worse:  seeing a hole or NOT seeing the screen unless you are on the front row?  We'll see what Ron can work out. Peace,Reatha – Friday 10/14
  • Jack offered a prayer recognizing the people of the class. We sang # 368. Jack encouraged signup for next Sunday noon BBQ. Mention Curriculum Committee Tuesday at 7 p/m in our class room. Discussed upcoming events including the Muslim lady. Don H’s son George  in hospital  and received insertion  to help with eating. Don H reported for Reatha on Health and Happiness. Sang Hymn 128.
  • Ace presented the lesson on new constitutional amendment (proposed) for marriage. An audio of this class is located elsewhere on this page and is suggested (by me) as “Required Listening”  for Ownbey members. During class both sides of the issue  were discussed. The class expressed its appreciation to Ace for the manner in which he presented the lesson with an acknowledge and round of applause. Here is the link and Amendment wording:
    • http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/Sessions/2011/Bills/Senate/PDF/S514v3.pdf  SECTION 1. Article 14 of the North Carolina Constitution is amended by adding 6 the following new section: 7
      "Sec. 6. Marriage. 8
Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be 9 valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering 10 into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating 11 the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts." 12
SECTION 2. The amendment set out in Section 1 of this act shall be submitted to 13 the qualified voters of the State at a statewide election to be held on the date of the first primary 14 in 2012, which election shall be conducted under the laws then governing elections in the State. 15 Ballots, voting systems, or both may be used in accordance with Chapter 163 of the General 16 Statutes. The question to be used in the voting systems and ballots shall be: 17
      "[ ] FOR [ ] AGAINST 18
Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage between one man and one 19 woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State."

20111006 Update from Reatha

Dear Ownbey Family,

1. Got word on Tue from DON H that son GEORGE was taken to CMC-Main on Sun aft'n. He could NOT swallow and (obviously) was NOT getting nourishment. They will insert a PEG tube today. [i had to look that up, but that is a feeding tube which is inserted directly into the stomach (vs a gastro-nasal tube)] Will keep you posted.

2. In checking w/SUSAN about ELLEN, she said that she has good/bad days, but visiting her at Southminster would be ok. I asked if we should call out there before we go, and she said no -- just go on out there and report to the front desk. If you find that it's NOT a good day to visit, simply stay for a short while and tell Ellen that you just wanted to drop in and say HI... [i don't know if Ellen has a visitor's book -- that's a nice thing to have when someone is bed-bound/home-bound -- but check on that, and if there IS one, please sign and date]

3. ACE will be leading our class this Sunday. I THINK his topic is same-sex marriage -- always a hot topic for discussion! [Ace, are there any Bible passages you wish us to read or questions you'd like us to ponder BEFORE we come to class?]

4. That reminds me: CURRIC COUNCIL MTG -- this coming Tue -- OCT 11th -- 7pm -- in our classroom.

5. And even tho' DURWARD will NOT be in class this week, you can STILL sign up for our annual BBQ It's coming up in 10 days -- SUN OCT 16th -- 12:15pm -- in Jubilee Hall. Remember that the cost is $7/plate, and it would be better to PREpay. If you'd like to mail Durward your check -- made out to HIM -->

Hope to see you in class this Sunday. I'll be arriving a bit late -- it's a "piano Sunday" for me
