20110425 upcoming Ownbey events by Reatha

Date:Mon, 25 Apr 2011 20:36:46 EDT From:Reatha Andrew To:Class
Dear Ownbey Family,
1.  Hope each of you had a glorious Easter!
2.  Did you see the article in Sunday's OBSERVER about Jimmy Jones and his recent family tragedy?  Despite all that has happened, Jimmy said:  "In the end, there is hope."
3.  In case you haven't been in class the past two Sundays or have not been reading the class blog which Don R. so lovingly keeps updated, you might not know:  our planned picnic scheduled for this coming Saturday (Apr. 30th) has been CANCELED.
4.  However, our NEXT planned event, a trip uptown to the Bechtler, is still "on."  Our Planner-Extraordinaire, Durward Owen, has outdone himself on this one! Here's the plan:  we'll leave the PLB parking lot after Sunday school (c.11am - so go to "early church") via church minibus (and Durward's van) and go to the Bechtler -- admission fee has already been paid -- for a guided tour.  Then we'll get lunch there -- your only cost; choose from their menu (which Durward will post this Sunday).  We should return to the church around 3:30. BTW:  there is elevator access between floors. We changed the leave time b/c Durward's orig 11:30 would be a long wait after SS ends...  He and I debated as to whether folks would like to go home and change clothes, but then you run the risk (even at 11:30) of someone getting caught in traffic (or something) and not getting back in time.  The change from 3:00 to 3:30 ...  Since I wasn't sure of the time folks might take in looking around, I went w/the later time. After some back-n-forth about the date, we have decided on SUNDAY, MAY 29th.  [yes, we know that that is Memorial Day weekend, but on Sunday the 22d, the musical production (IT'S SHOWTIME!) combining ALL the church choirs, will be presented) -- several of us in Ownbey will be involved in that]
5.  So, please, either call Durward or email him ASAP to let him know of your availability in attending our outing on the 29th.  [if we have a large turn-out, we'll need to use two church minibuses -- both Jim and I are authorized drivers]
Thanks so much,Reatha - Mon - 8:30pm
P>S>>  And mark your calendars now for our summer plans:
we're going back to the CHARLOTTE CAFE` -- each 2d Wednesday during June, July, August -- 6pm.

A reminder that the Class Picnic for April 30 has been canceled. Reatha noted  we need to arrange that the chairs not be placed along the wall in front of the bulletin board. She reported Happiness in that her sister Claire, daughter Amanda, and Amanda's husband John were visiting. Reatha then presented the class in the form of  Easter Readings. Don Hammer gave out an Ownbey Class Curriculum Survey and asked us to review for later discussion. Sydnor mentioned today is Harriette's last day singing with the choirs. Recently three people earned money for Helping Hands by taking Computer Courses at Southminister. Also, Carol D suggested I share with the class the following computer class info:

20110428 Official Roster, Directory, and Marking Sheet from Church Office for Ownbey Sunday School Class

Subject:Official Roster, Directory, and Marking Sheet from Church Office for Ownbey Sunday School Class

Hi folks.

In Short:
I would like to share a change in how we have been doing our Roster, Roll, and Class Directory. I have been doing  an Attendance Roll Sheet, Roster, and Directory  by using  data from the members and Church Office. At times I printed copies  and recently I formatted it to put much on the Internet (with a password). I have done this for 16 years and, with the wonders of current technology, realize that the Church Office is set up to do preparation for our use of the info better and more efficiently.
-------------------------------------------
Christine Mull  has provided copies of the  "Official" records of  Ownbey Membership in a format we can use to replace the work I have been doing.  As you probably know, Christine is Barbara Barden's right hand . .  and has been a joy for me to work with through the years. Thanks Christine. more . . . .

20110424 Ownbey Final Attendance Report 1997 through 4/24/2011

Hi Folks

Ownbey Final Attendance Report 1997  through  4/24/2011

In Short:
As you may know I have been keeping detailed Ownbey attendance totals since 1997 and I find it is time to end that effort. A Final Set is on line (Click Here) and attached and eventually in the postal mail to you. Please feel to let me have any final corrections, and I will  make them.
-------------------------------------------

One of the main reasons I did these reports  was to have information for follow up - especially by officers, friends, or  a designated person - with members who slip through the cracks and  stop attending. Also to let the missing know we are thinking of them. I am sure you heard my story when I was going through  my divorce  around 1976 when I missed a lot and no one checked in with me, except Sydnor Thomson who got me back. That prompted me  to try not to let it happen to others.  A related purpose was tracking the class progress in numbers through the years. We know class assignments are based on attendance figures, as the Fellowship Class found this year.

The church office can provide us with an Attendance Roll now called a Marking Sheet, a Directory, and Roster Information better and more efficiently than I can do it (Click here for that info). Realizing that, I am going to pass on reformatting into Excel sheets and think this is a good time to stop.

Below are direct links to the latest tabulations. There are links on the Blog. I am attaching a set to this email.  I  sent copies to Officers and Chairs by postal mail Thursday or Friday. To save money I did not use color. Also the one I sent  by postal mail will be two to a page and  small. If you need a  larger printed copy, please let me know  and I will get you one. I sent  by postal mail  printed copies in case you are unable to get to the links.

Below  are the links.

Jack presided. Class confirmed want to meet next week, Easter. Reatha will do readings. Reatha reported Laura Witherington progressing well after February gall bladder surgery, and Joyce said she was back like her old self. Lou shared an invitation from Dottie Caudell to attend Adults Plus Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. when Jan Rosser will do a monologue on Mary the Mother of Jesus. Stay for $5 lunch if call to reserve. Durward noted the 4/30/11 picnic is canceled not have enough people; based on raised hand vote, seems people do not care to cook to bring food. Hold open Sunday May 29 at 11:30 a.m for surprise bus ride and outing. Details soon. A member suggested we all  use the mike to make hearing easier for all. Don noted he recorded sessions and mike helps; also reminded that Blog many days has info about or for Ownbey including recently some surprising news from the Administrative Board. 2011.04.15 The King's Bible at Queens

King George VI (formerly Duke of York) became king of the United Kingdom when his brother Edward VII abdicated the throne to marry twice divorced American socialite Wallace Simpson.
The story begins in 1950, 14 years into his reign as king, and is the same monarch whose fight to overcome his stammering problem is the subject of the movie “The King’s Speech”.
It was during this time, when Queens College was preparing to dedicate the newly constructed Belk Chapel, that Miss Rena Harrell the school librarian came up with the idea to invite King George to donate a bible that could be used in the pulpit of Belk Chapel. Miss Harrell an enthusiastic Anglophile was crazy about all things British, including the Royal Family.
The king, known to be a religious man, . . .more at Smugmug, click on picture below . .

20110411 Administrative Board

Several Ownbey members of the Board were present and perhaps will elaborate Sunday.

Subjects: Hymn in honor of  Cissy and  Doris, Harris Teeter building/parking lot, bikers' parking, application for 2013 sabbatical for Senior Minister, summer intern, budget, and attendance results

We will have  representatives at a government hearing on the Harris Teeter building as it is going to be high and block the view of our church some; also, H T asked about letting employees park in our lots. We were reminded of the generosity of  the owners of the land in letting us park there for years without formal agreements making it hard for us to object to anything. Several community groups are objecting.

A recent incident when a policeman encouraged bikers to leave our parking  lot was mentioned as an example of that continuing issue.

Application will be made to Lilly Company for $50,000 grant for our minister to study theology and music in Europe with concentration on Chopin. MPUMC would receive $15,000. The  application is for 2013 (may-June) when James' children will be out of High School. Whereas the Lilly Company hopes the minister will remain at the sponsoring church a year after; it was noted the Methodist Church policy on moving ministers cannot assure that.

The financial condition was discussed with a couple of million dollars in the Bank and pledges up, collections up, and expenses down.

101 Email Etiquette Tips

Here is another good list
It is important that whether for business or personal use that you follow the basics of email etiquette. This document covers for you the top tips for email etiquette that everyone needs to be aware of and follow. By doing so you will be a joy to communicate with while being perceived as a caring and intelligent human being.

    Sending Emails

  1. Make sure your e-mail includes a courteous greeting and closing. Helps to make your e-mail not seem demanding or terse.
  2. Ask if the sender would prefer not to receive such emails, especially when sent to several people and not crafted for one person. It makes it easier for them to opt out without worrying so much about hurt feelings
  3.  Make sure your e-mail indicates quickly the  purpose of the email and what action is needed. Don't bury it in the body.
  4. A copy of the previous email helps make the flow of understanding better. If previous email not attached, spell out what your comment is in response to.
  5. Address your contact with the appropriate level of formality and make sure you spelled their name correctly.
  6. Spell check - emails with typos are simply not taken as seriously. Avoid undue abbreviations and shorthand.
  7. Read your email out loud to ensure the tone is that which you desire. Try to avoid relying on formatting for emphasis; rather choose the words that reflect your meaning instead. A few additions of the words "please" and "thank you" go a long way!
  8. Be sure you are including all relevant details or information necessary to understand your request or point of view. Generalities can many times causing confusion and unnecessary back and forths.
  9. Are you using proper sentence structure? First word capitalized with appropriate punctuation? Multiple instances of !!! or ??? are perceived as rude or condescending.
  10. If your email is emotionally charged, walk away from the computer and wait to reply. Review the Sender's email again so that you are sure you are not reading anything into the email that simply isn't there.
  11. If sending attachments, did you ask first when would be the best time to send? Did you check file size to make sure you don't fill the other side's inbox causing all subsequent e-mail to bounce?
  12. Refrain from using the Reply to All feature to give your opinion to those who may not be interested. In most cases replying to the Sender alone is your best course of action.
  13. Make one last check that the address or addresses in the To: field are those you wish to send your reply to.
  14. Be sure your name is reflected properly in the From: field. Jane A. Doe (not jane, jane doe or JANE DOE).
  15. Type in complete sentences. To type random phrases or cryptic thoughts does not lend to clear communication.
  16. Never assume the intent of an email. If you are not sure -- ask so as to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings.
  17. Just because someone doesn't ask for a response doesn't mean you ignore them. Always acknowledge emails from those you know in a timely manner.
  18. If the sender asks you to acknowledge, do it in most cases.
  19. Be sure the Subject: field accurately reflects the content of your email.
  20. Remove unnecessary abbreviations in subject line such as fwd, re, etc.
  21. Don't hesitate to say thank you, how are you, or appreciate your help!
  22. Keep emails brief and to the point. Save long conversations for the old fashioned telephone.
  23. Always end your emails with "Thank you," "Sincerely," "Take it easy," "Best regards" - something!
  24. Formatting Emails

  25. Do not type in all caps. That's yelling or reflects shouting emphasis.
  26. If you bold your type, know you are bolding your statement and it will be taken that way by the other side - X10!
  27. Do not use patterned backgrounds. Makes your email harder to read.
  28. Stay away from fancy-schmancy fonts -- only the standard fonts are on all computers.
  29. Use emoticons sparingly to ensure your tone and intent are clear.
  30. Typing your emails in all small case gives the perception of lack of education or laziness.
  31. Refrain from using multiple font colors in one email. It makes your email harder to view and can add to your intent being misinterpreted.
  32. Use formatting sparingly. Instead try to rely on choosing the most accurate words possible to reflect your tone and avoid misunderstandings in the process.
  33. Email Attachments

  34. When sending large attachments, always "zip" or compress them before sending.
  35. Never send large attachments without notice! Always ask what would be the best time to send them first.
  36. Learn how to resample or resize graphics to about 600 pixels in width before attaching them to an email. This will greatly reduce download time.
  37. Never open an attachment from someone you don't know.
  38. Be sure your virus, adware and spyware programs are up to date and include scanning of your emails and attachments both incoming and outgoing.
  39. It is better to spread multiple attachments over several emails rather than attaching them all to one email to avoid clogging the pipeline.
  40. Make sure the other side has the same software as you before sending attachments or they may not be able to open your attachment. Use PDF when possible.
  41. To, From, CC, BCc, RR, Subject:

  42. Only use Cc: when it is important for those you Cc: to know about the contents of the email. Overuse can cause your emails to be ignored.
  43. Don't use Return Receipt (RR) on every single email. Doing so is viewed as intrusive, annoying and can be declined by the other side anyway.
  44. Include addresses in the To: field for those who you would like a response from.
  45. Include addresses in the Cc: field for those who you are just FYI'ing.
  46. Make sure your name is displayed properly in the From: field.
  47. Remove addresses from the To:, CC; and BCc: field that don't need to see your reply.
  48. Always include a brief Subject. No subject can get your email flagged as spam.
  49. Think about your motives when adding addresses to To:, CC:, BCc. Use your discretion.
  50. Never expose your friend's or contact's email address to strangers by listing them all in the To: field. Use BCc:!
  51. Make sure when using BCc: that your intentions are proper. To send BCc: copies to others as a way of talking behind someone's back is inconsiderate.
  52. Email Forwarding

  53. Don't forward emails that say to do so--no matter how noble the cause may be. Most are hoaxes or hooey and may not be appreciated by those you send to.
  54. If someone asks you to refrain from forwarding emails they have that right and you shouldn't get mad or take it personally.
  55. When forwarding email, if you cannot take the time to type a personal comment to the person you are forwarding to--then don't bother.
  56. Don't forward anything without editing out all the forwarding >>>>, other email addresses, headers and commentary from all the other forwarders.
  57. If you must forward to more than one person, put your email address in the TO: field and all the others you are sending to in the BCc: field to protect their email address from being published to those they do not know. This is a serious privacy issue!
  58. Be careful when forwarding email on political or controversial issues. The recipient may not appreciate your POV.
  59. Email and Perception, Privacy, Copyright

  60. Choose your email address wisely. It will determine, in part, how you are perceived.
  61. Try not to make assumptions when it comes to email. Always ask for clarification before you react.
  62. Posting or forwarding of private email is copyright infringement -- not to mention downright rude. You need permission from the author first!
  63. Even though it isn't right; emails are forwarded to others. Keep this in mind when typing about emotional or controversial topics.
  64. When there is a misunderstanding by email, don't hesitate to pick up the old fashioned telephone to work things out!
  65. Know that how you type, and the efforts you make or don't make will indicate what is important to you and if you are an educated courteous person.
  66. If you forward an email that turns out to be a hoax, have the maturity to send an apology follow up email to those you sent the misinformation to.
  67. When filling out a contact form on a Web site, do so carefully and with clarity so your request is taken seriously.
  68. If a friend puts your e-mail address in the To: field with others you do not know, ask them to no longer expose your address to strangers without your permission.
  69. Business Email

  70. Think of your business email as though it was on your business letterhead and you'll never go wrong!
  71. If you cannot respond to an email promptly, at the very least email back confirming your receipt and when the sender can expect your response.
  72. Emailing site owners about your product or service through the site form is still spam. Ask them if they want more info first!
  73. When replying to emails always respond promptly and edit out unnecessary information from the post you are responding to.
  74. Formality is in place as a courtesy and reflects respect. Assume the highest level of formality with new email contacts until the relationship dictates otherwise. Refrain from getting too informal too soon in your email communications.
  75. Never send anyone an email they need to unsubscribe from when they didn't subscribe in the first place!
  76. Be very careful how you use Reply to All and Cc: in a business environment. Doing so for CYA or to subtlety tattle can backfire and have your viewed as petty or insecure.
  77. When replying to an email with multiple recipients noted in the To: or Cc: fields, remove the addresses of those who your reply does not apply to.
  78. Never send business attachments outside of business hours and confirm that the format in which you can send can be opened by the other side.
  79. IM, Blackberry

  80. With IM and Chat, try not to be overly cryptic or your meaning can be misread.
  81. Use Instant Messaging (IM) for casual topics or informational briefs. IM is not the place for serious topics or confrontational issues.
  82. Start by always asking if the person you are IMing is available and if it is a good time to chat. Refrain from IMing during meetings or when your attention is required.
  83. Practice communicating briefly and succinctly.
  84. Use IM for casual topics or informational briefs. Serious topics are not for IM.
  85. IMing is not an excuse to forget your grade school education.
  86. If you are not a smooth multi-tasker, do not continue multiple IM sessions and leave folks hanging while you communicate with others.
  87. Learn how to use the features of your IM program. Specifically your "busy" and "away" message features.
  88. Never IM under an alias to take a peek at friends' or associates' activities.
  89. Take into consideration who you are communicating with to determine the acronyms and emoticons that should be used - if at all.
  90. Email and Blogs, Forums, Message Boards

  91. Keep in mind when in newsgroups or message boards that you are in a global arena. Read the charters and rules - before you post.
  92. When discussions get out of control; don't stoop to name-calling or profanities. You are better than that!
  93. Keep your signature file to no more than 4-5 lines.
  94. Keep commercialism to no more than a link at the end of your comment or contribution.
  95. Stay on topic and discuss issues only relative to the thread/topic in question.
  96. If new to the message board, "lurk" for awhile to get a feel for the community and personalities of the regulars before you post.
  97. Never give out personal information or specifics to your location on message boards.
  98. Keep in mind there will always be differences of opinion. Try to remain objective and not personalize issues.
  99. Don't fall for trolls. Trolls are folks who will post rude comments just to get a rise out of everyone.
  100. Be sure to down edit, or remove any part of the post you are replying to that is no longer necessary to the ongoing conversation.
  101. Common Courtesy Considerations...

  102. Before getting upset because you perceive someone didn't respond, check to see if their reply was inadvertently deleted or sent to your Trash or Junk folder.
  103. With emotionally charged emails, wait until the next morning to see if you feel the same before clicking Send.
  104. Feel free to modify the Subject: field to more accurately reflect a conversation's direction.
  105. When it comes to your email communications, know who you can trust; trust only those you know.
  106. Take the time to review each email before clicking Send to ensure your message is clear and you are relaying the tone that you desire.
  107. Never use an old email to hit reply and start typing about an entirely new topic.
  108. Regardless of how noble a forwarded email may be, don't just forward without investigating its authenticity @ Snopes.com.
  109. Always add the email addresses of Web sites and new contacts immediately to your approved senders or address book so they get through Spam filters.
  110. Before completing a Web site's Contact form; make an effort to review the site to be sure the information you seek is not already available.
  111. Take a quick look at the e-mails in your Trash before you delete them just in case a good e-mail landed there by mistake.
  112. If any email states to forward to all your friends, or just 5 people -- do everyone a favor and just hit delete!
  113. Please keep the abbreviations to a minimum. They actually slow down the reader unfamiliar with your particular shorthand, and reflects poorly on your literary  skills.
  114. Don't mass e-mail people who didn't ask to be on your personal "mailing list".
  115. Double check that your adware, spyware and virus programs are set to automatically update at least once each week so the software knows what to protect you from.
  116. And finally... Type unto others as you would have them type unto you!
