New Not a Quiz but  LECTURE Notes

Several folks mentioned having trouble getting to our internet information. Perhaps these comments will be of help and also lead me to determine what problems we are having.

1. The Internet is over 3 years old, Al Gore did not discovered it, and   is an electronic system connecting computers with each other
2. An ISP is an Internet Service Provider,a  business providing the technology for computers to communicate, may be reached though telephone lines, cable similar to cable TV, and magical electronic waves in the air.
3. How are all the computers connected - not by a string and tin can, marriage, or underground sewer lines BUT  by wires used for telephone, television, and magical electronic waves in the air.
4. Speed is important in  connecting all these computers.
5. Speed is very important in connecting computers over the internet.Telephone lines called dial up are very slow, Telephone lines called DNSare faster but slow to, magical electronic waves in the air (wifi) is fast Cable connections are very fast.
6. Telephone lines called dial up are the cheaper  system of those mentioned above.
7. Cable connections usually are the most expensive and  fastest for consumers though businesses have more exotic names for their connections which are even faster.
8. ISP's (Internet Service Providers)  include Mindspring, Earthlink, RoadRunner ,AOL, MSN,  ATT, lots of local companies
9. A Browser is a program used to get around on the Internet
10. The names of some browsers /"a program used to get around in the Internet" include Internet Explorer, AOL On line, SeaMonkey, Safari, Chrome, and many others
11. An email program sends messages over the internet
12. Some email programs include Outlook (from Microsoft), Thunderbird (Mozilla), Aol Mail (built into AOL Suite),SeaMonkey (has email built in as do many such programs), Mail Station, and others,
13. Hot mail, G mail, Yahoo,  are email programs which keep your emails on THEIR computers, NOT on yours.They have to be emptied more than stand alone programs on your computer and that can be a big hassle as it makes it hard to locate old emails.(Tell me iof I am wrong, I just learned that AOL lets you keep messages on your computer).
14. What email programs do you use? (might have more than one) and which is the easiest?

15. Some of the first things one needs to know to use the internet and to send emails include Typing even hunt and peck, How to select, How to copy, How to put what you copied somewhere else, called paste, How to double click,How to go to an address on the internet.
16. A computer  mouse is a device to make it easier to use a computer.and a funny little device that has at least a right side (R) button and left side (L)  button on the top which lets one push down to do  computer tasks. Pushing down the R or L button is called clicking
17. When one says to left click, they mean (assuming you are right handed) to Push down the Left (L) Button using the right  hand
18.  When one says to double  click, they mean (assuming you are right handed) Push down the (L)  button two times very fast
19. A mouse Cursor is the arrow you see on screen when you move mouse around
20. Select means to highlight a word or words.
21. To select, put the mouse cursor at one end of word(s), push down and hold the right mouse button and slide  cursor to highlight to other end of word(s) and release.
22. To copy while something is highlighted, push CTR and  c key (referred to as CTR+C) at same time and release.The selection is in memory
23. To cut (remove) something highlighted, push CTR+x at same time and release.The selection is in memory
24. To paste or add something  that has been copied or cut put cursor where you want the selelection to go, push CTR + v at same time. The selection still is in memory if you want to repeat.
25. Ctrl+Q will quit many programs
26. Ctrl+S will save most work underway in many programs
27. Ctrl+P will print in many programs
28. Ctrl+A will select a lot of stuff for further action
29. Ctrl+C will copy what you have selected
30. Ctrl+V will "paste" what you have copied
31. Ctrl+X will  remove what you selected
32. A selection stays in memory until there is another copy or cut
33. An address for a web page is called, "An address for a web page," A web address, a URL ( Uniform Resource Locator), URL address
34. We will use URL address for a while to mean all the terms listed in 19 
35. The following is a URL address that will work: www.donredding.com or http://donredding.com
36. The following is a URL address that will not work: donredding or wwwdonredding.com
37. The following is a URL address that MIGHT work: donredding.com
38. The URL address line in a Browser is around the top
39. You can  tell a URL address in an email or on a web page if it starts with either www. or http://, It will have an underline usually, It might say Click Here but not show the URL
40. What level of skill is this lecture addressed to? a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 the Expert and 10 a beginner who does not know what goto means? _________

Dear Ownbey Family, ...here's what she reports: -------------------------------------------------------------- I talked with Twala and she is doing well. She should be going home Friday. She is at the old Mercy hospital, and her son, Ben, is here. That's about it! Carol D. *** Our Twala Care Team will get started next week. There was a planning mtg yest'y -- which I could NOT attend -- which scheduled volunteers. Speaking of Carol... she sugg'd we get some expo markers for our class and KEEP THEM IN THE PIANO BENCH. Since our room is used by several other groups, this is a great suggestion. I checked the mailroom for some markers and found only some generic brand of RED markers. So I bought a 4-pack (R,B,G,Blk) and have fixed a zip-baggie w/OWNBEY CLASS written on it and placed them in it. I'll run it by the class this week before I go to LS/RF Class to play piano. Then after class, as we gather up hymnals and clean up, we will put "our" markers back in the bag and put it back in the piano bench. Twala is having her (other) hip replaced on Tuesday.  We are looking for a few (maybe 5) folks to help with meals and errands when she comes home.  I hate to ask your class again!!   You have been so good to help.  This is a short term team.  Maybe through February.  We have 4 people already.  Email me any names after you meet on Sunday.  Thanks for your help.

Got this good news from CAROL (DOUGLAS.)

TWLALA KRUGER'S (hip replacement) surgery was originally scheduled for Dec 22, and she was dreading the wait due to the increasing amount of pain and discomfort she's been experiencing.

Twala got her surgery date moved to December 8, the day of our Christmas  party.  She is managing ok at this point.  Carol D.

Reatha, I talked to ARLYENE ARMSTRONG's daughter today.  She said that Arlyene  is doing well with radiation but had an extra session today because of Thanksgiving this week.  She was asleep when I called, but the daughter said she loves our class and finds it so much like the one at her home church.

I'll try to keep you posted on her situation, but it is evolving rapidly. It has all the familiar parts - his home burning and his mom saying God saved him for something important, his doubts, going to Georgia to preach to the savages, scared to death on the ship over and amazed at the Moravians' peace in danger, "courtship" with a beautiful young woman, the lawsuit when he refuses her a sacrament, getting run out/sneaking out? of Georgia, his "heart strangely warmed," preaching on his father's tombstone, "grace is why we are saved, as for works . . .," Charles' song writing, conflicts with Church of England, etc.It also has some interesting insights into his "love affair" in Georgia and other bits of his life By luck we went to the showing with the director and main actors present and we met them. The actors were so young and good looking, on screen and in person. . most from North Carolina Linda and I enjoyed it and feel it is a good movie to see, especially for Methodists. There are several inspiring scenes. Here is link. Dear Ownbey Family,


Got word from SUSAN MOBLEY and BILLY TOBIAS that the Care Team which we've had in place for DOTTIE is being disbanded... b/c she is doing sooo much better!  (Other son) LARRY will be driving in on Sat. Nov. 14th to stay for 8 weeks, but our Team will stop official service before then.  Billy wrote that he was able to sing in all 3 sanctuary services this past Sunday, leaving Dottie alone from 7:30 - 12:30, and she did fine!  Yest'y she was able to prepare her own lunch -- reading directions, etc.

Altho' our Care Team is no longer needed, please feel free to call and talk w/her, arrange your own visit, etc.  Billy is hoping to bring her to choir practice tomorrow night   :-) 


In class Sunday, CAROL DOUGLAS announced that soon she will be walking to church a lot more... b/c she is moving into The Carlton!  And, get this:  the unit is the one formerly inhabited by the Baxters   :-)     Her new address (after this coming Friday) will be:

The curric. comm. met last night and mapped out lessons thru Jan, 2010.  I've not yet been successful in getting them posted on our class website -- tricky wifi connection -- but hope to do that soon.


H&H update
We now have a Care Team in place for DOTTIE TOBIAS.  Volunteers visit her 3x a week, giving BILLY a chance to get out, meet w/a client, and get other things done.  Those who have visited w/her report that she's in good spirits and progressing extremely well since her stroke back in July.

Some other folks have had good visits w/MEL HALPERN at Sunrise on Randolph.  Cristina was in class on Oct 4th.

Dear Ownbey Family, ANN EDWARDS visited our class yest'y to ask for volunteers for a possible CARE TEAM for DOTTIE TOBIAS. Unfortunately, the sign-up sheet did not make it across the room before she returned to retrieve it, and some of us missed out. I called her last night and got her e-addy so that others might contact her (ask Reatha for email and telephone): Here's the deal: this week, SUSAN MOBLEY will assess Dottie's condition to see if a Care Team is possible. BILLY plans on taking the next 8 weeks off from his job (as a personal trainer) to tend to his mom as she readjusts to life at home. He'll need time to run errands, etc, so that's when C are Team members would step in and stay w/Dottie. If you are interested in being a part of this, please contact Ann Edwards. A joint meeting of volunteers will be called before the Team starts. At that time, you will need to bring your calendar/planner so a schedule can be worked out. I think I have presented all the info correctly. Susan and Billy, let me know if I have not :-) The class voted to pay for Shebra to fix box lunches for HABITAT workers. Some of us will be delivering those this Friday. Another class H&H concern: it was announced in class yest'y that EMILY ALYEA had fallen and broken one of her arms. No mention was made about her needing anything -- she has a sister here in town -- and I didn't get a chance to call her yest'y, but please send cards and/or call her.

2009.09.04 Update Libby Claire McGarity

Click for complete writeup . . .september 3rd is here. her surgery is done! i never knew i would be so excited about a date & dread it at the same time. we got no sleep last night & were up well before the alarm went off. but our little pips slept like a champ! last night was really stressful. matt & i tried to "make normal" for all the other kids but there was no doubt we were out of sorts. we made it through dinner, bath time & bedtime with only a few tears...mostly on our part. we settled libby claire in & got all packed up. we were out the door around 5:15 am. she was so happy to get in the car & loved the lights on 77. we got checked into levine & they brought us up to the 5th floor. she enjoyed 50 laps in her wagon around the floor, conversations with nurses & meeting a cardiac patient, maggie, who was close to her age. we pre-op talked with doctors & by 7:15am she had her dose of versid. she became relaxed & willing to climb into the warm blanket nancy had. she was taken back at 7:24 am. i cried so hard when i saw our baby girl in the arms of another mama, singing her off to the OR. nancy is awesom . . .Click for complete writeup . . .

Dear Ownbey Family,

1.  Got a call today from CAROL DOUGLAS.  She has been taken OFF kidney dialysis... at least for now   :-) 

2.  In my copy of the church Prayer List which I received today, Linda Hawfield mentioned that she'd seen TOM STINSON at church and that he'd expressed his gratitude for our praying for his son while he was battling cancer and job loss.  Tom reports that his son is in good health now and has found a job   :-) 

3.  ANNE BUKER sent me a recent editorial from DWIGHT SPARKS which told about grandson, ROBERT SPARKS, and his first few days at Oklahoma Univ.  Robert will be playing flute/piccolo in the marching band, AND... MAYBE you can catch a glimpse of him on TV tomorrow night -- ESPN, 7pm, OU vs BYU   :-)     It might be easy to actually see him b/c he was skateboarding two days before going out there, and he fell and, yes -- broke his right wrist -- so he'll be playing w/the help of a splint (altho' that will prob. be covered by his uniform...)  BTW:  since his first love is piano and since he's taking a piano course this semester, he "did his homework" and found left-hand-only music written by a composer whose right arm was blown off during WWI.

4.  And I suppose you noted in your church e-blast today that LIZ LUMADUE will be singing in the "reactivated" 11:15 service this Sunday.  If you attend the 8:30 svc or CITR, you can come to SS then attend the 11:15 svc as well   :-)     [just a sugg'n...]

Dear Ownbey Family, I talked w/CRISTINA this morning, getting an update on MEL. She and the family are busy today, packing up and moving things to Mel's new room at Sunrise on Randolph (NOT on Providence); it's right near Billingsley Rd, on the Mint Museum Side. Mel will move in tomorrow. His mobility has greatly improved -- even better than last fall. He's able to walk w/a walker, and everyone is happy about that. However, his cognition has suffered. He remembers names, his childhood home, the Barclay Downs Swim Club (where Jack has been going swimming w/Marcelo's girls), but does NOT remember their former house on Manning or their present apt. on Cherokee. He thinks he's at some sort of resort and wonders why Cris can't stay... Adrian, his wife, and new baby are coming to town this weekend. Lucia and Jack are flying back to England on Sunday. As to ways WE can help: 1) please WAIT till I hear from Cris or Susan Mobley before you go visit; obviously Mel needs to get familiar w/his new surroundings first; I'll let you know. 2) send cards. 3) Cris will also let me know when we can help in other ways. Dear Ownbey Family, We got more good news during class this past Sunday when BETTY CAMPBELL told us that her mother was expected to go home after three weeks in the hospital. The main problem had been getting her meds correctly adjusted. This Friday will be the closing ceremony for both Freedom School -- check your bulletin or your Friday "e-blast" for info -- and also the Summer Enrichment Program at First Baptist West (on Oaklawn) which we helped support through our Helping Hands funds. [I think that CAROL DOUGLAS said that it starts at 5:30. I'll check and get back to you.] This Sunday I'll be presenting the book, AMISH GRACE, for our lesson. And that aft'n, all women are invited to the pre-Ramadan dinner and program at the Islamic Center on The Plaza near Harris at 5:30pm. [Amanda and I are going. I have been busy since arriving (in Wilmington) -- a visit from Ben and Ann and Laura. Then Ben sent me a plane ticket to come visit them in Ky. Had a great time there and the weather was beautiful. Now back in Wilmington -- my cousin's family is visiting at the beach with nine little grandchildren!!!!! And my brother and all his family will be here next week. Hope all is well with you. Dear Ownbey Family, And here's DOTTIE's good news!!! -------------------------------------------------------------- Hello To You All, I don't suppose that we could ever thank each of you enough for your kind words, thoughts, prayers, cards and gestures of goodwill that have been shown our family since mom's "adventure" began a scant 11 days ago. Friends like you are indeed precious to behold. Thank you, every one. Now... to the meat of the story. Mom was discharged from Presbyterian Hospital yesterday (Wed.) afternoon and has been admitted to Mercy Acute Rehab Hospital (room 6006) on the corner of 5th Street and Caswell in Charlotte. Yesterday was intended to be a rest day before her therapy which started this morning. Last night's thunderstorm notwithstanding, rest she did! When I stopped in for my daytime visit today, I found mom sitting in her wheelchair, in the dining room not terribly interested in anything. When she saw me, she lit up and we opened her cards and the more we opened, the more engaged and animated she became. Lunch arrived and she began feeding herself, with a spoon and with BOTH hands! She was drinking out of a cup all by herself with both hands, though with a bit more difficulty with her right hand. About this time, she decided to read aloud her menu choices for tomorrow, which she did in a clear and distinct voice. I will be bringing clothes (sweatshirts and sweatpants) for her to begin the therapy of dressing herself as well as shoes so that she might begin learning how to walk again. Fascinating and stunning is all I can say to describe her transformation over just the last couple of days. Thanks go out again to the tremendous network of friends and family who have participated in this remarkable event. She also wanted me to share wonderful news: my father stood twice today for at least 5 minutes each time! And.... he walked (with a walker and a with a care-giver behind him) for at least the length of a city block! My mother was amazed. It is more than he has walked in at least 6 weeks. A month or two ago, Wilma wrote me that Bob Johnson had called her to say that Nancy had been in lots of pain. They ran tests and found tumors all along her spine. They treated her for pain, but that was all they really could do besides sending her to her sister's w/hospice care. Nancy had been living at a UMAR group home in Winston. I can't remember her age, but I remember that Nenie Midyette and Eleanor used to work w/her (and maybe Randy Soule) in a special needs class we offered at church. And I seem to recall that she competed in roller skating in Special Olympics. In talking w/Eleanor today, I found out that there is another daughter, named Janie. The Lumadues plan on coming and can give an update on Anne's great-grandniece, Libby Claire. If Ellen Chason is there, she can report the latest on Dottie. Cal can relay what this note says. Thanks, everyone! Take care, Reatha - Sat - 6pm ____________________________________________ Hi Reatha My father moved from CMC to Asbury Care Center (at Aldersgate) Thursday afternoon. He had a difficult week at CMC. When he arrived on Sunday, he essentially couldn´t move at all. His legs were completely rigid, and he had a lot of pain in his back and neck. He was also very disoriented. The doctors who saw him didn´t have good explanations for the cause, other than a sudden and severe acceleration of Parkinson´s coupled with possibly incorrect doses of medications. Fortunately, he responded well to his first session of physical therapy yesterday and, for the first time in over a week, was able to move (or, rather, be moved) from bed to a wheelchair. He was able to pedal a "bike" (attached to the wheelchair) and, according to the care giver who was with him at the time, was in good spirits. He continues to be somewhat disoriented but recognizes everyone (including my son Jack and me by telephone). My mother is exhausted from providing full-time care for so long. She brought in 24-hour care at home several weeks ago (3 weeks or so before he went to CMC) but still is very much the primary care-giver. Marcelo took her to CMC every morning during the week, and she stayed with my father for a bout 12 hours until Marcelo relieved her for a few hours in the evening. A care-giver stayed with my father from when Marcelo left until my mother arrived again in the morning and another joined my mother during much of each day. Because he is essentially bedridden at the moment, my father requires much more attention and assistance than the hospital staff was able (or willing) to provide, even during the night (he has been having trouble sleeping during the night.) -- hence our efforts to make sure there is a care-giver with him at all times. Adrian arrived yesterday from Chapel Hill and will be able to give my mother and Marcelo some support over the weekend. I will arrive early next week and will stay through the end of August and hope to be able to provide my mother with a bit of time to get much-needed rest. My parents are very grateful for the expressions of concern, prayer and good wishes they have received! Warm regards Lucia

If any of you do NOT want daily reports, just let me know, and I'll leave you off my SEND list. ra - wed - 6am ___________________________________________ Sent: Tue, Jul 14, 2009 9:16 pm Subject: Dottie Tobias - Tuesday July 14, 2009 Summary Again, please indulge me a moment of thanks to each of you for your continued support and prayers for Mom during her recent health event. Now to a summary of her progress throughout today, Tuesday July 14, 2009. Mom appears to be much more active this morning in her reactions to stimulus, both verbal and physical. She maintains good eye contact and has nicely progressing movement in her extremities, both left and right sides including a rhythmic tapping of both hands and feet. She smiles at jokes that are being made and appears to recognize the faces of family members. She has begun to swallow on her own, a big step forward so as to allow feeding which will begin the process of medication (atrial fibrillation meds.) that she was taking at home before the incident on Sunday. Mom was taken down for an MRI this afternoon, and she came through that with no complications. Results will be shared with us sometime during the day tomorrow. She was not quite as responsive after the MRI, which could have been caused by fatigue. Music (Classical [Mozart]) has been brought into her ICU room, as well as a few family photographs to help in stimulation of brain activity. Her late afternoon session with the occupational therapist showed a promising development. The therapist asked Mom to tell her if anything hurt during the movements. Mom turned her head towards the therapist and spoke the words, "No pain." This is very encouraging news as it is her first verbalization in the now near 48 hours since the event. Again, I would like to tell you all how important your continued thoughts and prayers are to us. We deeply wish that each of you could share in our joys at witnessing her progressions from the stroke, but we must stress not being overly optimistic. While these developments are good indications of her brain coming back to life, we must remain guardedly positive and realize that these are the first steps along a protracted road to recovery. I will continue to update you all through these nightly e-mails and again thank each and every one of you for your help, your support and your continued prayers for her. God's Peace, Billy Tobias

1.  Got a call from ELLEN CHASON, saying that DOTTIE TOBIAS suffered a SEVERE STROKE last night!  She's in Presby ICU.  She'd just gotten home from out of town (visiting son LARRY) and was checking her mail.  Son BILL was upstairs when he heard the thud/crash/whatever of her falling.  He rushed downstairs to find her, called 911, and began CPR.  They operated last night, removing the clot from her brain -- left lobe, thus her right side is affected.  They were going to run a CAT scan and MRI today, but have postponed those (for whatever reasons.)  While Ellen was there this aft'n, so was the physical therapist.  He asked Dottie to wiggle her toes, and there was ever so slight movement.  As far as Ellen could tell, Dottie did NOT open her eyes, but apparently she COULD hear...

2.  Had an email from LUCIA HALPERN --> daddy MEL is in CMC being assessed for his increasingly compromised mobility, accompanied by severe symptoms from Parkinson's, which have plagued him the past two weeks.  CRIS asks for NO VISITORS at this point since they are running tests and deciding what to do next, but would appreciate cards and prayers.

GOOD NEWS (which Cris had hoped to share w/us in person):  dtr-in-law VERA, ADRIAN's wife, gave birth to their 1st son (MAXIMILLIAN NICHOLAS) on on June 29   :-)     The new young man appears to be thriving!


3.  Speaking of youngsters:  ANNE LUMADUE announced in class yest'y that she and her large, extended family would appreciate prayers for her great-grandniece, LIBBY CLAIRE.  The 20-mo-old toddler managed to squeeze between the rails on their upstairs (non-childproof) bannister, falling onto hardwood in the "open" vestibule (or whatever the correct term is) late last week.  Sat. was deemed a "pretty good" day; yest'y "not so good"...  They removed part of her skull to aid in the swelling of her brain.  And today, she was placed in an "induced coma." Hope it was happy :-) No b'days (that I see on my list) till Sat. July 11th, when we celebrate FRED SADRI's arrival into this world. And if you'd like to hear him preach, I found out at CITR choir practice last night that he'll be bringing us the sermon during Church in the Round, 8:45 in Jubilee Hall. NEWS ANN COPELAND called me the other day, saying that she had called the GROGANS for an update. MARILEA and GARY are doing well; Gary's meds have been requlated once more. And BOB doesn't need to report back to his cardiologist until September! He is encouraged NOT to do anything strenuous and will prob. need surgery in the fall, but he's feeling chipper these days. [note to Grogans: if I'm mis-remembering anything, just let me know] I'm hoping that CAL and ELEANOR CHESSON made it safely to Ecuador and that they are having a great time! Allen Justin Maxwell, Sr. Mr. Maxwell, 79, of Charlotte, NC passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born in Charlotte in 1929, son of the late Justin Ward Maxwell and Mary Ethel Youngblood Maxwell. Mr. Maxwell graduated from Central High School in the Class of 1947 and received a BS degree from North Carolina State University in 1951. He managed the family business, Piedmont Feed Mills for a number of years and later worked for B&H Foods Inc, manufacturer of Ruth's salad and sandwich spreads, where he ultimately retired in 1993 as President. Mr. Maxwell was a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church, the Owenby Sunday School Class and Charlotte Country Club. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Maxwell was the first scoutmaster of Troop 166 and later the scoutmaster of Troop 3. In retirement he enjoyed golf, gardening and woodworking. In addition to his wife, Ann Franklin Maxwell, he is survived by two sons, Allen Justin Maxwell Jr. and John Franklin Maxwell and his wife, Robin, all of Charlotte; two grandsons, Franklin Thomas Maxwell and Andrew Ward Maxwell; sister, Kitty Ward Maxwell Sellars; nieces, Mary Maxwell Sellars and Nancy Sellars Mundorf; and nephew, Reverend and Mrs. Lacy Starr Sellars. There will be a memorial service to honor the life of Allen Maxwell at 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning, June 26, in the sanctuary of Myers Park United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. James Howell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in Jubilee Hall at the church. Hello All: By now you probably know that we have all been saddened by the loss of Allen Maxwell. I am sure that Ann and her family are all in our prayers. I understand that there will be a memorial service for Allen at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Our Class will host the reception after the service. I do not believe there are any class birthdays next week. Dr. Harlan L. Creech, Jr. Reverend Creech, 96, of Charlotte, died Monday, June 15, 2009 at Asbury Care Center. Dr. Creech was born September 21, 1912 in Barnwell, SC, and was the son of the late Professor Harlan L. Creech, Sr. and Jenny Lou Hutto Creech. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Rebecca Capps Creech; brothers, Charles Creech and Dr. James Creech; and sisters, Dorothy Turner and Ida Mintz. A 1933 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College, he earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Duke University in 1936 and an honorary Doctor's degree from Pfeiffer College in 1965. He was ordained a Deacon and an Elder in 1937 and 1939 respectively. Dr. Creech served as a pastor for over 40 years in the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church serving pastorates in Gold Hill/Mt. Pleasant/Cool Springs/Bethlehem, Winston-Salem, Asheboro, Lenoir, Salisbury, Morganton, Albemarle, twice in Charlotte, and was District Superintendent of the Charlotte District. He retired in 1977. Harlan was an athlete his entire life. He played tennis and football in college. As an adult Dr. Creech loved gardening, hunting, fishing, jogging and was a competitive golfer. Never afraid to try new things, he took up dancing and bridge in his 80's, and learned to play the piano after age 90. Dr. Creech believed in eating the right foods, regular exercise, and healthy living habits. Dr. Creech was a pastor in the deepest sense of the word. He worked tirelessly caring for his church members through sickness, health and facing life's problems. He persuaded people with his example, quiet sincerity, honesty and dedication. Indeed, this was a good life lived to its fullest by a good man. He is survived by three sons, Harlan L. Creech, III and his wife Jane of Salisbury, David C. Creech of Charlotte, and Timothy M. Creech of Concord; grandchildren and spouses, Joseph Wesley Creech and wife, Nicholeen, Carol Winchester and husband, Chuck, David Creech, Jr. and wife, Sue Ann, Rebecca Ellen Creech, Chris Creech and wife, Tonya, and Manuel Creech; and great-grandchildren, Matalyn Creech, Brooke Winchester, Chad Winchester, Christopher Winchester, Andrew Creech, Liam Creech, Anna Creech, Chris Creech, Kelly Creech, Lan Creech and Kayla Creech. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2009 at Myers Park United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Howell officiating. A reception will follow in Jubilee Hall. When I got home this aft'n, I had a message from Carmen, Congregational Care Assistant, asking if I could help w/the reception following the "Creech funeral."

Called the church back to learn that Harlan died early this morning.  The funeral service will be this Friday (19th) at 11am.

We might need a few more folks to help w/the reception in Jubilee Hall after the service.  If you can do that, please contact me -- simply press REPLY -- or call, .

Our June 7th lesson celebrated some of our Helping Hands recipients. KEVIN WRIGHT, minister of missions, thanked our class for our involvement, both monetarily and physically, in such areas as Room in the Inn, Habitat housing, and most recently, in sponsoring two of our own, JACK COPELAND and JIM HATFIELD, in the church's annual mission trip to Costa Rica this past spring. Kevin also updated us on other missions, such at Haiti and the local housing problem, and what our church is doing to help. PATSY BURKIN, executive director of the Clara H. Jones Summer Institute, thanked us for our contributing to this worthy program. The Institute reaches and inspires children in the area of fine arts, as well as challenging them in academic areas, over the summer months. Class member CAROL DOUGLAS has served on its board. It is held at First Baptist West on Oaklawn. REATHA ANDREW read a thank-you letter from DEANTHONY, one of AMANDA BRADSHAW's 5th grade students. (Amanda is Reatha's daughter.) The 5th graders at Barringer Academic Center took a 3-day trip to Camp Harrison in the NC foothills as part of their science curriculum. They studied conservation, ecology, and building exercises. 06/07/09 Garden / Baxters Going Away ( to South Africa) Partya

The Ownbey Sunday School Garden Party / Baxters' going away party was held at Brenny's Sunday and we had a tour of Winghaven. The first sounds are of Bob Lumadue reading a going away poem for the Baxters followed by Cal 's comments about the them. The Baxters are moving back their home from long ago in South Africa to be with one of their sons who runs a Guest House. The Video also is below.

We had a super Sunday (6/7/09) with the class session about our Helping Hands program and with the Garden/Going Away Party for the Baxters. Madeline Stanford has a Birthday on the 7th; Genie Hauersperger on the 10th, and Ann Maxwell on the 12th. HAPPY BIRTHDAY !

This Sunday we will hear about the Recipients of grants from Helping Hands and how we have made a difference. Tom Stinson and the Helping Hands Committee are doing a great job - THANKS !

Gerald from Don 6/3/09 I promised to send you directions. You go down Selwyn toward Queens College. Go beyond Queens Road West and after a couple of streets turn right on Ridgewood. Winghaven is on the right half way down and Brenny is right beside it further down.

Dear Ownbey Family,

Several of you have asked about parking for our Garden Party
this coming Sunday.  I wrote to Brenny asking for suggestions,
and here is his response.

Reatha,
Parking is not an issue and is available up and down Ridgewood
and other side streets. Just don't park where it says you can't,
like by hydrant, or in front of sign that says "don't park from
here to corner" directly across from my  house.
It might be good just to have everyone park only on my side of
the street so cars can get through more easily.
They might have to walk a bit further, but not too far.

Dear Ownbey Family, New notes and updates on some of our folks... -------------------------------------------------------------- (from Wilma Miller on Th. May 21) Reatha, I had a call today from BOB JOHNSON in Nashville giving me some sad news about his and Elizabeth Anne's daughter NANCY, who lives in Winston Salem. (By the way, Elizabeth Anne died on May 12 of last year, so Bob is still grieving over losing her.) Nancy has not been feeling well for several months, and after taking her to several doctors in Winston Salem, they have learned that she has numerous tumors up and down her back. He said that two of the tumors are very near the brain stem and all are cancerous. They have been trying to shrink the tumors with radiation. Nancy is on morphine and is allowed no visitors except immediate family. I asked about sending cards to her in the hospital, and he said she would appreciate cards, but to send them in care of his other daughter, Carol. (They may move Nancy into a Hospice unit.) THANKS! Susan also told me that she had visited HARLAN CREECH on Tue. at Asbury. He will be staying there or in their Memory Care Unit. He is still very confused, has fallen a few more times, and presently has a black eye from one of his falls. It is especially rough for sons, DAVID and TIM, because he's "just not their dad"... They now have someone staying w/him 24/7. Cards would be greatly appreciated -- not only for Harlan but also for the "boys." Harlan Creech (David and Tim) 8041 Shiney Meadow Lane CLT * 28215 KEN BUKER had no problems getting his stitches out this past Wed, after his tumble on May 14 (when he broke his nose.) However, he and ANNE decided that they would NOT go to their mountain house this weekend, so if you'd like to call and chat --> 704.333.0921. Saw WILLARD and VIRGINIA GOURLEY at H.O.T. Wed meal this past week, so they are now out and about. Yea! And I am grateful for the kindness of strangers. Last night around 7pm, I came out of Michael's on South Blvd. only to find my front left tire going flat. Long story, short: while I was calling AAA, a couple stopped to help -- they had seen my emergency flashers.. The husband took off my flat, put on my "donut" spare (which also needed air, but that's Part 2 of my story), and I'll be able to get to church this morning. Whew!
