Got word from ARLYENE ARMSTRONG's daughter (JAN KIRKPATRICK) that she is doing well, living w/Jan and David again.  Arlyene has NOT fallen any in the past two months; she enjoys her caregiver and being "home"... but misses us!

I've been seeing signs in my n'hood about the upcoming Annual Woodcarvers' Showcase -- Sat/Sun, Feb 18th/19th -- 10am-4pm -- in the Marion Diehl gym on Tyvola Rd -- FREE admission!  As one who has gone to these over the years -- esp to support KEN BUKER and LEE DUKES (and now, to honor their memories) -- i highly recommend your attending  :-)    Just a word of caution:  even tho' they say "till 4pm"... that's really NOT the case on Sunday -- lots of folks pack up early to head home.

I saw several members from our class last night at the MATT RAWLE presentation w/JAMES, and heard from some more folks who got to go to today's session.  Good stuff.  Of course, they taped it, so it should be on youtube soon (if not already).

20170128 Reatha's Update


Dear SS Family,

Tomorrow we'll continue viewing/discussing the Matt Rawle dvd series, THE FAITH OF A MOCKINGBIRD.Pt.3 explores the character of Tom Robinson.  We'll close this series on Feb 5th, looking at the character of Boo Radley.

Of course, you've been getting reminders from the church that Matt will be HERE on Mon night and again Tue morn to discuss this book and his faith.

[Just a heads-up:  i'll be playing handbells at the beginning of the 9:45 and 11:00 services, so i'll be arriving to SS a bit late, and will have to leave a bit early (if our discussion becomes "involved"). This actually might be a GOOD thing:  i might not get there in time to slow down the dvd set-up!]

Last Sunday aft'n, i attended a SS meeting, led by Barbara and Mark Kinghorn.  We learned that the main emphasis during Lent will be "Prayer."  I am responsible for our lessons in April, which includes Palm Sunday and Easter, so i hope to build on the "Prayer" theme.  I will share the plans for summer in a later email.

Just got an email from WENDY MAUNEY:  her mom, JANIE JONES, died this morning.  You may recall that Janie's been at Sharon Towers for several years.

May i add to what Ann (Howard) said about the great group of attendees:  we had c.34 folks!  And this video series is really good.  Remember that Matt Rawle, the author and former Duke intern here a few summers back, will be coming to speak here later this month.

I hope that this gets to our usual mailing list -- the computer is NOT cooperating; not letting me download the mailing list!  I've had to enter each of you individually...  And i used my old mailstation at home last night when i sent out the news that Janie Jones had died.  [so i hope you had gotten THAT already]

What a great group of attendees today! 

Gaye presented the first in the video series, THE FAITH OF A MOCKINGBIRD.  Good lesson and know the remaining ones will be just as interesting and thought provoking.

Room In The Inn update - a few changes/additions:
-   Bronwyn and Joanie Gaskins,  Kathy and Michael Crump, Jim and Nancy Hatfield  will join the Friday evening dinner crew
-   Dinner and Breakfast crews have confirmed menus
-   Jim Hatfield will serve as "navigator" for  Friday evening and Saturday morning bus.

- We have eight couples signed up for the Restaurant Week Dinner at Bonterra's
They are located at 1829 Cleveland Avenue - off East Boulevard.  There is street parking and a lot.

Treasury Update
- Mary Katherine Vass gave the 12/31/16 Treasury report.  The Ownbey Treasury balance was transferred into the MPUMC Helping Hands Funds in the amount of $6479.26.  There is a copy of her accounting available in the classroom for your information and/or review.

We had 22 members (+ B.Barden) in attendance today, despite the weather, and had lots of time to meet/greet each other, both before and after class  :-)    Next Sunday we'll be starting the dvd series, "THE FAITH OF A MOCKINGBIRD" - by Rev. Matt Rawle, who was a Duke intern w/us several summers ago!  James highly recommends this series, and Matt is coming HERE to speak later this month -- check the church website.

To all,
Charlotte's restaurant week - "Queen Feast" - is coming up later this month: January 20th to 29th.  This is something that the Genesis Class has done a few times in the past.

In an effort to organize a dinner for our new Class, I wanted to get an idea of how many would be interested in attending.  I've chosen Bonterra Dining & Wine Room restaurant, located in Dilworth in a renovated 110 year old church.  I'm sure that some of you have dined there, but for those who have not it offers a unique experience.  Their menu for restaurant week offers 5 different items for both the first course and the entree, with a good variety of menu.  Price for the 3 courses, with desert as the other one, is $35 per person.  They can accommodate a large group on one of the Sunday nights, but at this point they are available only on Sunday, the 22nd.  Timing for a large group has to be early, so either 6 or 6:30 that evening.

If you see this message before our class in the morning, then perhaps you can bring it up for discussion to gauge if folks would be interested in it.  Otherwise, you can reply back to me to indicate your interest.

20170105 Update from Reatha about First Genesis Class on January 08, 2017




Dear SS Family,  Thanks to those who were able to come last Sunday and share in some fellowship.  We had 10 members and 2 guests:  John Rasberry (former member) and Rev. Erman Bradley (a frequent visitor).  Thanks to Linda for bringing some shortbread cookies and to the Lumadues for sharing some cheese straws  :-)

I'll be sending an email after this which tells about Dennis Savell's lesson this Sunday -- his topic and scriptures to read beforehand, if you get the chance.  Of course, w/the weather being "iffy," please use your best common sense as to whether you can make it SAFELY to church!  [as someone who has a steep driveway, i might not make it in...]

Also, even tho' we have talked in class about some of the compromises as to class procedures, i haven't yet put them in an email, so... here ya go:

Genesis folks were used to fellowshipping from 9:45-10:00;  Ownbey from 9:30-9:45, so...
fellowship time will run c.9:30 till 9:55, when we will have an opening hymn.
Since Genesis usually didn't sing any songs, and Ownbey sang two, we will sing just the one (unless the lesson leader wants more... or some other special event calls for more).
I've already mentioned that Genesis has monthly presiding officers (sorta like Ownbey, tho' these people also line up the lessons and teachers for "their" month).  The leaders for January are Gaye and Larry Booth.
After the hymn, the leader will share any announcements, and then the lesson will start.

We'll continue having the attendance "check-off" sheet at the back of the room, along w/a money/collection basket.  This money will go into the Genesis-Ownbey class acct.   [for any donations to Ownbey Helping Hands fund, please write a check, made payable to MPUMC and write "Ownbey Helping Hands" on the memo line -- that will help our record keeping vs making any cash donation]

Room set-up for Genesis has been sitting in a circle -- making it easier for discussion; not talking to the back of people's heads, etc.  However, we MAY still be in rows this week as we "tweak" some things.

I think that's it...  If i've forgotten anything -- anyone who was at our pre-Thanksgiving meeting -- or if anyone has any questions, just let me know!

Dear SS Family,

If you are coming to church for either the 8:45 or 11:00 service -- remember: there is NO 8:30 service -- come to room 110 for SS Fellowship Time -- no lesson.  I'll be bringing in my electric hot water kettle along w/fixin's for coffee and tea, since the church is NOT providing coffee this week.   We can get caught up on holiday happenings, Health/Happiness, etc.
