Dear Ownbey Family, Tomorrow DURWARD will lead our lesson:
"What Jesus Did NOT Say" -- i think the
author is Palmer... and not sure
that it's that's a book title or simply an article. We have one more Dec b'day: MEL ALLEN on New Year's Eve! And here are the January birthdays: Sun 5th - Martha Bledsoe Th 9th - Jane Pixley Mon 20th - Sandra Vaughan (Fri 24th - Marilea Grogan) (Tue 28th - Marie Pearce) Fri 31st - Emily Alyea Hope everyone had the merriest of Christmases, and that 2014 will
be loving and wonderful for you and yours. Peace, Reatha - Sat - 9pm

Dear Ownbey Family, Tomorrow will be our annual Christmas Readings, shared w/us lovingly by Lou And church-wide it's LESSON AND CAROLS, presented in the Sanctuary by the Chancel Choir... while those of us in CITR will offer THE CHRISTMAS STORY IN WORD AND SONG. On the last Sunday of 2013 (Dec 29th), Durward will present our lesson, entitled WHAT JESUS DID NOT SAY. Hmmm -- now THAT's a provocative title! Speaking of DURWARD... many thanks to him for arranging our Holiday Breakfast last Sunday... and to CONNIE for her lovely St.Nicholas decorations. We ended up w/32 folks, including KEN GARFIELD. BARBARA was able to drop by between her duties in the various services. ARLYENE's family (JAN and DAVID) joined us, and CHIP represented CAROL (who couldn't come due to some nagging pains). It was also a joy to see KEN (as well as ANNE, who gets to come most weeks). ...and THE Fred etc and jack etc -- ANN looking MUCH better than at our party when the bruises from her recent fall were still prevalent. OSCAR was able to come again -- his family usually worships at Calvary. I think the rest of us who were there are "regulars"... If i overlooked anyone who wants their name "in print" just let me know I was hoping that my sister would be joining us tomorrow, but her plans to come down (from Fairfax, VA) have changed due to her basement boarder's 101-yr-old aunt being hospitalized for pneumonia... Ann tends to the townhouse AND the cats whenever Claire come here. Looks like we'll be celebrating our "Adams Christmas" in a few more weeks -- all travel plans are on hold for the moment. Wishing ALL of you the happiest of holidays! Save travels... to kith and kin (or even just to church!) In His love, Reatha - Sat - 10am

Today we continued the Bedlam seties and one item we discussed was Memories of Christmas which led to comments on how we remember. I said one way I like to remember was with  the photographs I take of my family, sports, and church including the Ownbey class. We have available on line media covering many years of Ownbey including our 40th (1993) and 50th (2003) Anniversary Celebration and  many of the class sessions for the last 10 years. Class media  is on Smugmug and notes of our class over the years are in the Blog. I mentioned I wished more folks would go to the Blog (and Smugmug) - no matter as I keep it as my own diary of the class. After class I was reminded that I have not provided or reminded the class of the links recently as I once did and I promised to share the links. If you see incorrect info or media that needs editing or removal , please let me know. We also have a web presence on the MPUMC site in a more formal and concise form and is maintained by Reatha.

  • Here are direct links  involving Ownbey (Many links require password -  let me know if you need). Let me know where  corrections are needed.

Dear Ownbey Family,
For those of us who signed up to enjoy our Annual Holiday Breakfast, that happens TOMORROW!
Come to our classroom by 9:00 to join in the festivities

I will conclude our Advent study FINDING BETHLEHEM IN THE MIDST OF BEDLAM after that, using the familiar Luke 2 as we recall our favorite Christmas memories.
And NEXT Sunday (22d) we will continue our celebration of the season with another beloved tradition when LOU shares various Christmas readings.
Lots of things happening 'round the church, too:
tomorrow at 4pm in Jubilee Hall: KNEELING AT THE MANGER...and at 5:30 in the sanctuary: LOVE FEAST
Peace, Reatha - Sat - 3pm
December  09, 2013
Dear Ownbey Family,
I will conclude our look at FINDING BETHLEHEM IN THE MIDST OF BEDLAM next Sunday (after our Holiday Breakfast). The scripture will be the familiar Luke 2 as we recall our favorite Christmas memories.
Daily scripture to ponder...
Mon (9th) - Exodus 34: 1-9 - The Character of God
Where do you need to practice a deeper level of mercy, love, and forgiveness toward others?
Tue (10th) - Psalm 33 - Sing About God's Steadfast Love
How was God w/you during a hard time in your life?
Wed (11th) - John 1: 1, 14-18 - The Incarnation
What do you learn about God by looking at Jesus?
Th (12th) - John 3: 16-17 - For God So Loved...
Write down John 3:16, but replace "the world" w/your own `name. Then read it aloud. Does this personalization of the scripture put a different spin on it for you?
Fri (13th) - 1 John 4: 7-12 - God Is Love
How can you put love into practice this week so that others will know God's presence and activity?
Sat (14th) - Romans 8: 31-39 - God Is for Us
What does it mean that God is for you?
Peace, Reatha - Mon - 6am

Dear Ownbey Family,
1. If you didn't get to sign-up for our annual Holiday Breakfast which will be IN OUR CLASSROOM on SUN DEC 15th at 9am, please contact Durward ASAP (so he can contact Shebra w/our numbers by Tue). Luckily, we have a surplus in our social coffers so there will be NO CHARGE for class members However, if you bring family/friends, we ask that you pay $7 for each of them. Thanks.
Call Durward:
2. I forgot to say in emails this past week that the Nominations Comm. gave its report last Sunday: ALL current office holders have agreed to continue for another year [yes, you are stuck w/me... yet again!] A motion was made and seconded to accept the committee's report by acclamation. It passed. Thanks to everyone for agreeing to continue to serve.

3. ANN C suffered a fall in the parking lot at Southminster last Monday, landing face-first! I was "sworn to silence" by their daughter , but then today ANNE L announced it in class -- seems that Ann (and Jack) felt well enough to attend our class party at THE T on Friday night, so... guess it's no secret now!
Ann called me this aft'n -- she and Jack stayed "in" today -- she said she's beginning to feel better, even if the bruises are still visible. We are grateful that she didn't break anything or chip any teeth or anything!
4. Today's lesson (led by SYD) proved rather short, so he afforded us an "extra" lesson on The Magnificat The three main points of LOVE CAME DOWN IN BETHLEHEM: Love is more powerful than... 1) fame, 2) force, 3) money.
PONDER: Have you ever experienced the power of love at work in your life or in the life of someone you know? If so, how?
The "Song of Mary" can be found in Luke 1: 46-55. It would prob be a good idea to also read about Mary's cousin's pregnancy, too, in Luke 1: 5-25, and Gabriel's appearing to Mary in 26-45... and also an O.T. story which sounds quite similar: 1 Samuel 2: 1-10.
Look for another email w/daily scripture readings for the week.
Peace, Reatha - Sun... late
