Class Business
1.  The Helping Hands Committee met right before SS and brought the following recommendation to the class:  that we give $500 to World Venture as they seek to raise $200,000 for missions in Myanmar.  The missionaries who run this are friends of the Hatfields, and in the past, we've helped them as they built up a mission in Kenya.  Their plans for Myanmar are to build a church, school, conference center, and orphanage on land that they have already purchased.  Our contribution will be matched dollar-for-dollar by a donor.  Mary Katherine presented this to the class, discussion was called for (there was none), vote was taken, and it passed.
2.  I presented the Christmas opportunity from Local Missions (to help w/Charlotte Rescue Mission), saying that Gaye had emailed me that we have enough funds in our Class Account to help w/this.  The class agreed that it was something worth exploring, and so i asked for volunteer(s) to delve into it a bit more.  Ellen graciously agreed to contact our church liason to see how we might help.  [Thanks, Ellen!]

H&H
1.  Speaking of Gaye...  She and Larry have hit a rough patch, healthwise, of late.  She had another scan last week and turns out she doesn't have the kind of tumor that thought she had -- which is good:  docs don't seemed as concerned about this one.  But... they also found a small hole in her L lung!  She had it x-rayed two days, back-to-back, and there seemed to be no change in it, so they are hoping that it is healing on its own.  She just needs to rest and use her oxygen more!
Larry's had a lot of trouble w/pain and weakness in his legs.  An MRI last week showed that there are pblms w/a disk in the lower part of his spine.  He's on steroids and was to have seen the spine doc yest'y...
Many of you have been "in the loop" and have been helping w/food and transportation.  Thanks so much!  And if you need any more help, just sing out!
2.  We were glad to have Frank back, after that n'bor's tree fell on his house!  He had just had his own trees trimmed not long ago...  He shared a phone # of the "great tree guy" who's been taking care of him and Pat:  704-573-8700 -- sorry, didn't catch the guy's name.
3.  Linda reported that Don's doc said that his new valve is working "wonderfully well."  We're so glad to hear that and hope that Don continues to rest and recupe.  We miss having him in SS.
4.  Rick has a new g'daughter!  Daughter Helen gave birth on Oct 18th.  [i'm sorry i didn't get all the stats -- just contact Rick, i'm sure he's more than willing to share...]
5.  Oh, we were happy to have the Myers' daughter Peyton Gehron and her hubby Jake w/us in class as Dennis finished up his series on Adam Hamilton's UNAFRAID.
6.  And i just saw on fb a few hours ago that Barbara and Mark Barden's son Chris survived a scary run-in w/a deer on 485, while going 70mph!  Looks like the car was totaled, after it spun around (a few times?).  Glad Chris is ok!

Anything else?

Happy H'ween!

  • Pen & Note Pad Set

  • Pocket Dictionary
  • Inspirational Tokens (carry in pocket, key chain, etc.)
  • T-Shirts (white – M, L, XL)
  • White Athletic Socks

If your Sunday School class or small group would like to provide one of these items, please let our Local Outreach Committee liaison for Charlotte Rescue Mission, Kathryn Melton, know at kathryn.r.melton@gmail.com.  She’s also happy to answer any questions you might have.  Please know that these spots do book up, so sign up early for the best choice of items.  Thanks!

20181020 SS Update

Dear Ownbey Family,

Another great lesson from DENNIS MYERS, using the Adam Hamilton dvd series UNAFRAID.

Not sure i included the neat acronym he shared w/us the other week (and today)...

Face your fears w/faith
Examine your assumptions in light of faith
Attack your anxietes w/action
Release your cares to God

Next week we'll explore "Aging, Illness, Dying, and Fear of God".

Dennis also included two scriptures that Hamilton encourages us to remember... especially during election time:
Matthew 7:12 -- "In everything, do to others what you would have them do to you..."
James 1:19 -- "...Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry..."

H&H
Saw a posting on fb by LORI (GROGAN) BLUMBERG:  daughter LINDSAY has passed the bar (in Va?).  Lindsay is one of MARILEA GROGAN's g'daughters.

Stay warm, everyone!

201810114 class news schedules lessons ace cal mary katherine ..thanks to simon

018 11:45 AM

Dear SS Family,

1.  SIMON SPENCE presented a wonderful lesson on his pilgrimages -- one w/son Jacob and one "alone" -- hiking El Camino (Spain).  We also welcomed 9 other members of his SS class to hear him.

2.  MARY KATHERINE VASS shared w/us that she has had a pacemaker implanted!  She is doing well, tho' still a bit tired at times, but is looking forward to returning to swimming soon... and she DOES seem to have more color in her cheeks  :-)

3.  ELEANOR CHESSON announced that CAL is a now a candidate for a cochlear implant.  We hope that he will be able to have THAT procedure done in the not too distant future.

4.  Last week i forgot to say that ACE WALKER had returned to class after having surgery to remove a basal cell carcinoma from under his right eye -- or maybe it had been on his eyelid...  [my eyes are watering as i type this... no matter which it was!]  He is doing well.

UPCOMING LESSONS
DENNIS MYERS will continue Adam Hamilton's UNAFRAID, which he started last Sunday.
On Oct 21st, we'll look at session 3 -- among topics covered is FEAR OF DISAPPOINTING OTHERS
On the 28th, we'll look at session 5 -- those topics include FEAR OF AGING and FEAR OF GOD

ELLEN ERICKSON and i attended the SS Curriculum Mtg last Sunday night.  There we learned that the BUILDERS CLASS is having an "outside" speaker come on Nov 4th to speak on AGING WITH GRACE AND PURPOSE.  Their class is inviting others to join them, and Ellen and i thought it a good idea to do so.  Dr. CHARLES EDWARDS is a gerontologist and founder of The Memory Center of Charlotte.  The info going out in the CORNERSTONE says that the class will start at 9:30, in room 103.  [Builders meets in 103-104, and IF they open up that entire side, the class that meets in 105 will need a space.  I THINK that's actually Simon's class...  At any rate, they will meet in our room (110) while we "travel" to meet w/Builders.  And there is ALSO the possibility that Builders will need more space than those three rooms.  If THAT's the case, they will most probably need to meet in the unfinished part of the basement.  Details are being ironed out, and i'll keep you posted as i learn more.]

NOVEMBER
Presiding Officer -- D.SAVELL
4th -- meet w/BUILDERS CLASS
11th -- TBA
18th -- RACHEL HUMPHRIES will come and speak w/us about Refugee Support Services
25th -- TBA

DECEMBER
Presiding Officer -- REATHA
The first 4 Sundays will be an Advent Series, still to be decided which one...
2d -- Advent #1 --DAVID DULIN
9th -- Advent #2 -- SUSAN SAYRS
16th (Lessons & Carols) Advent #3 -- REATHA
23d -- Advent #4 -- TBA
30th -- TBA

Dear Class,

I highly recommend the opportunity to listen to Dr. Chuck Edwards.  His knowledge surrounding all forms of dementia and his care for patients is exceptional.
His personal experience as a son whose parents have or had Alzheimer's Dementia brings to us, The Family, a blanket of understanding, comfort and direction that is hard to find.  He has been a life saver to our entire family for 5 years.
I wish I could join you (on Nov 4th), however, a respite opportunity thru Hospice is enabling me
to go visit Alison in Indiana that week-end.  We are continually blessed that Trudy remains very healthy and always happy.

Miss you guys, Bert

Hey Reatha!
Just wanted you to know that dad and mom's house was hit by a tree.  They are OK.  There is a hole in the roof.
Daddy can't get his car out so that is why he wasn't at church.
Hope you are doing well.
Thank you,

From:Reatha
Subject: SS lesson (Oct 14th) + some updates
Date: Oct 12, 2018 5:00 PM
Dear SS Family,
1.  Reminder that THIS Sunday (14th) church member SIMON SPENCE will speak to us about the pilgrimage he and his son(s) took earlier this year.  We can also expect some members of his SS class (who have NOT heard his presentation) to join us.  We look forward to hearing him and welcoming them!
2.  DON REDDING was back in 8:30 svc and SS this past week!  He and LINDA could NOT join us Wednesday night at Trio's b/c he'd had his eyes dilated during his eye exam -- but, i'm happy to report that he got a good report from his doc  :-)
3.  And ANNE LUMADUE was able to join us in class this past Sunday!!!  I was going to announce that i had heard that both she and BOB had come to church for their flu shots, but walked into class to see them both.  It was so good having her back!
4.  Below, you will find an update from CAROL BYRAM.  [you can tell from the date, how late i am in sending this out...]  We wish her continued progress in her recovery.
Any other news?  [oh, when i got home yest'y after having to stay w/g'kids while CMS was out, i found a limb across my driveway, which i had to move to get my car in -- then i picked up other branches littering the way and also tossed some old car mats onto a chair they'd blown off of... which disturbed a hidden yellow jackets' nest -- the guard hornet stung me 3x:  both hands and my neck!  R hand got the most venom and is still a bit swollen w/fever (and itching) after 24 hrs]

Subject: Re: Genesis-Ownbey: Oct stuff and H&H news

Hi Reatha,
Y'all are just a wonderfully caring group.  Am attending church every Sunday online.  Enjoyed the sermon today and wish had been there for anointing.  Yes, sometimes we have to change seats or at least our perspectives.
Several people visited me that 24 hrs in the hospital.  The kindness and concern within this church is exceptional.
Update:  I am just discharged from home visitation physical therapy and do not need additional visits at a clinic.  Yaaa!  The 18th will be my MD follow-up evaluation, but am doing well -- pain is manageable and motion is above average for recovery.
I appreciate prayers and thoughts of everyone.  Hope to be back in a couple of weeks.
Blessings, Carol

20180919 Update Witherington . . .Ericksons

Dear SS Family,

I emailed JOYCE and LAURA WITHERINGTON, who live in Wilmington, to see how they had weathered the storm.
Below, you will find Laura's response.

Also, news from Ann Arbor, MICH:
The ERICKSONs g'daughter HAS arrived!  EVELYN was born early Sunday -- 2:30am -- weighing 6-lb, 12-oz, and sporting a headful of dark hair.  Later in the day momma KATHRYN's BP spiked, so they have been trying to get that stabilized before she and Evelyn can come home.  Obviously ELLEN and GARY will be staying longer than expected, but that's what g'parents are for, right?

Sending loving thoughts to them, the Troxler family, the Witheringtons, and any others in need of special TLC.

We were fortunate to evacuate before the storm hit.  We have been trying to get in touch with neighbors to see how the properties have fared in the storm.

1.  Mom’s house is without power now, and two trees came down but landed in the street.  No other damage was reported.
2.  I have heard nothing about my condo, or from my neighbors, but when it rains hard in the past, the back yard floods, so there may be damage to the inside.

Other than that, we are nomads until the NCDMV tells us we can come back in.

Thanks for checking in.  We are happy to be alive and kicking.

Hi, Keels and Reatha.

Each month, I plan a service activity for our elementary children, and we typically ask a few parents to stay and “chaperone”... but the members of Children’s Council thought it might be neat to invite some members from other adult Sunday school classes to participate in these activities with our children instead.

The first event is coming up on Sunday, October 7th.
We typically do something the first Sunday of the month except for September and December. Times vary, but this first event will be from 4-5:30.

Is this something that you would want to float to members in your class to see if there's any interest?

Dear SS Family,

HOPEfully we will be able to have class this Sunday.  But even if the church is open, do NOT place yourself in harm's way trying to get there!  Assess your situation and make wise choices.

IF we are able to meet, we will be led by Rev. Madeline Gray, speaking from the Adam Hamilton series "Half Truths -- God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Does Not Say."

I'm typing this while staying w/g'kids since CMS is out.  After i get back home this aft'n, i will NOT have computer access to quickly contact you via email, if church conditions change, and i plan on staying home tomorrow.  I WILL be able to see emails on my phone, but can't respond en masse.  Can't access my e-file.  Guess you saw James' email, saying that church updates will be posted on fb and other social media, or you can call the church's main phone line for any message.

Everyone, please stay safe!

20180912 . . . . . SUSAN TROXLER

Dear SS Family,

The Celebration of Life for SUSAN TROXLER will be Wednesday, September 12th, at 2pm in the sanctuary.
A reception will be held after the service in Jubilee Hall.

[There may also be a visitation BEFORE the service, 1-2pm, in the sanctuary -- narthex, maybe? -- but that's not set in stone.]
Tim had called me last night.  Think he said they were still working on the obituary at that time.  Haven't seen today's paper...

Dear SS Family,

It is with much shock and sadness that i must share that SUSAN TROXLER has died...

For those of you who were in Sunday School five days ago, you'll remember her being there.Don't know much yet, but apparently, she suffered a heart attack. The family is still working out plans for a service, and Uiyeon will let me know details when those are finalized.

I'm sure that Tim would appreciate cards:

Reatha-

Just a gentle reminder that my Sunday School Class Lesson this coming Sunday, September 9, 2018, will be rooted in Paul and his 2nd Letter to the Corinthians.  It is a follow-up on the lesson I taught on July 1, 2018, that was on Paul, Corinth, and his 1st Letter to the Corinthians.  I would suggest that class members take just a few moments, if possible, before Sunday morning and read the scriptures shown below.

2 Corinthians Chapter 1 - Verses 1-7   "The God of All Comfort"

2 Corinthians Chapter 13 - Verses 11-13   "Grace, Love, and Fellowship"

Also, I request the hymn we sing be verses 1 and 4 of "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling."

Thank you.

Update 9/2/2018
Dear SS Family,

1.  Below you will find a thank-you note from DURWARD (aside from my announcing it in class today).
2.  Heard from WILMA MILLER that daughter LAURA's lower L leg amputation went well.  She scared everyone Saturday when she fell, but says that she did NOT hurt her leg!

Dear SS Family,

1.  Happy B'day to DURWARD (today!)  Hope you are resting well and recuperating at an appropriate rate of speed.

2.  Saw JEREMY COFFEY this week, here at church.  He brought over a box of work boots for us to sign

20180824 Update

Dear SS Family,
Some more prayer requests:
WILMA MILLER writes that she's just gotten home now after those 3 months in hospital/rehab.  She has folks from "Comfort Keepers" tending to her for awhile.
You can write her at:
See Directory or Reatha email
Morrisville,

And please remember her daughter LAURA (MILLER) who must have her lower left leg AMPUTATED on Aug 28th.She has been suffering from AVN -- avascular necrosis, which is when the bone "dies" due to loss of circulation of blood -- actually in BOTH legs.  Not sure, at this point, the fate of her right leg.Laura will need to stay w/Wilma (or w/her brother GREG and his family) immediately after surgery, so you can write to her in care of Wilma.

Had a note from LINDA Christopher, asking if i had an address for CHIP CHASON, ELLEN's son.  I don't have his address, so i directed her to Susan Mobley -- and perhaps Jeanne Poole would know.

Dear SS Family,

Thanks again to ELEANOR for a great lesson yest'y about Simon Peter.
It was great having her g'daughter, EMILY ARZANI, visiting w/us.  We're always happy to see her!

And to ALL of you:  thanks for making CAROL BYRAM and JAN POOLE feel so welcome.
They were so impressed that they sent me -- via REALM -- requests for JOINING OUR CLASS!!!   I accepted, of course, and have added them to my class mailing list -- so they should be getting this as their first class email. Now we just need to work on LEIGH HENNESSEY  :-)

I hope to attend the REALM workshop tonight and will take Don's question about accessing class list, addresses, etc. It's a learning curve, for sure!

Next Sunday, RICK GASKINS will lead our lesson. Also DENNIS SAVELL has signed up to arrange lesson leaders for Sep, DENNIS MYERS has signed up for Oct, and i've signed up for Dec. So we're off to a good start in planning out our "new year"!

I, too, have good news.  After 3 months in the hospital and Rehab, I’m scheduled to go home to Apt. 233 at Preston Pointe in Morrisville next Thursday (23rd).  It’s been a long haul!

I think Wilma has sent you an email today telling you that she will go back to her apartment at Preston Pointe next Thursday. We are all so glad to hear that! I visited her today and she is much more communicative and looking forward to returning to her apartment. They are still wrapping her feet and legs to help prevent swelling. Her appetite is better and she is looking forward to better food at Preston Pointe, also! Care givers are available there to help her when needed so sounds like they have everything worked out. I am sure she will have adjustments to make to get settled back into the apartment but hopefully they will not be major. I am just so glad to be able to report significant progress! Hope all of you are doing well.

Dear Sunday School Leaders,

Please see the following one-time volunteer opportunities with our partner agency, The Learning Collaborative, courtesy of Local Outreach Committee member Dennis Heydanek. Would you please share with your class?

TLC is a preschool working with underserved families in the Grier Heights neighborhood. They work with kids as well as their parents, empowering them to be their children’s best advocates beyond the preschool years.

Thanks so much!

Dear SS Family,
Even when Durward goes home, he will still be weak and need his rest and recuperation time.
Connie MAY need some help.  I'll check w/her to see how we can be of service  :-)
An update on Mike O'Neill: He has returned to his new "digs" after spending some more time in rehab... after suffering another mini-stroke.Think there are also issues w/his heart.

Dear SS Family,
Just heard from Susan Mobley:  she visited w/Durward this morn.  If all goes well, he will go HOME tomorrow!  Great news, huh?
This Sunday, Eleanor Chesson will lead our lesson.  Her topic is Simon Peter.
Carolyn Johnston and i were among those who attended the night version of weekly Bible Study last night.  If you have not yet heard Uiyeon Kim speak, you're missing a treat!  Go to church's website to access his sermon from the other week.  There may also be a link to his speaking in Dallas -- if not on church website, there's a link on fb.
Any other news?

Dear SS Family,

Got an email from Durward himself yest'y aft'n, saying that he HAS been moved to Sharon Towers for rehab  :-)
Later (c.6:30) Connie called me at home to share the same news!  She now can rest and breathe easier herself... after all the un-knowing that had "hung around" most of last week/weekend.  Daughter Melissa has returned to New Orleans.  Son David has returned to Greenville(?), SC.

Dear SS Family,
1.  From Dennis' lesson yest'y, Robin Hearn was reminded of a hymn she learned, growing up Catholic.  I would suggest you go to youtube and search for I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE -- by Sister Toolan.  Several different versions to view.
2.  As far as i know, Durward is still in Presby Main.  If you wish to send cards, use their home address:
3.  So far, our list for Summer Supper, this Wed night at Trio's (6pm) stands at 18-19:

20180801 Update . . . Durward

Dear SS Family,

Those 8 other folks in class last Sunday heard me say that Durward had emailed me from Chicago last Friday, saying he & Connie wouldn't be in SS... b/c he was in a HOSPITAL up there w/double pneumonia!  He wrote again on Saturday, saying the docs had pretty much given the OK for him to leave hospital on Sunday, and they could fly home.  Got a text on Sunday aft'n, saying they were on a flight, but he was still VERY sick!

I contacted Susan Mobley, and Monday, she tried reaching him.  She checked hospitals here, etc.  Yest'y she was able to find him at home -- VERY sick -- he'd gone to his medical group but had NOT seen his regular doctor, and the "new" guy/gal did NOT change any of the meds he was on.  Their daughter is in town from New Orleans(?) to help out.  They had to call 911 last night, and now Durward is at Presby Main.

I'll keep you posted, of course.  What a way to start out his birthday month!  [i will soon send an email about our Aug lessons, Summer Supper at Trio's, and birthdays -- think we have only two this month...]  I volunteered to help w/the kids' Performing Arts Camp at church this week -- good thing:  they needed someone to monitor playground/gym!  I'm rather tired, for some reason...

20180727 Update ... Sunday Christmas in July

Dear SS Family,

Remember that this Sunday we will be celebrating Christmas in July  :-)

You may bring poetry or readings to share, and we'll sing carols/hymns and share memories of special songs or Christmas events.

Unfortunately, Ellen will NOT be in attendance, so rather than putting up w/my poor piano playing, we may simply sing a cappella -- just as if we were caroling door-to-door!  Who of you remembers, as i do, when the church used to hire city buses to take us to various church members who were "shut in" for us to sing to?  I seem to recall 4-5 buses...  And then we'd return to church for hot chocolate and cookies/popcorn...  Right?

Happy Holiday!
Reatha - Fri - 3:30pm
[Maybe i should say:  Happy 24 Hours of Booty...  Luckily i'll be leaving church area before this starts tonight!]

20180720 Update . . . travel . . .lessons

Dear Genesis-Ownbey Family,

And indeed, this is FAMILY time for many members in our class:

* The Booths got to travel to the Raleigh area last week for g'daughter Lily's 6th b'day  :-)
And Gaye emailed me last night that she's been given the go-ahead from her doctors so that she+Larry can actually take a "big" trip!!!  Her hemoglobin is up in the normal range, and her oxygen arrived yest'y -- tho' she doesn't need to use it unless she exerts herself.  They'll be gone for the next two Sundays.  They also send their thanks for all the cards, calls, and meals.
* The Savells are visiting son+family up in Minnesota.
* The Hatfields have returned from Colorado where they visited their first great-grandchild -- a boy!  However, Nancy MAY have picked up a "bug" while they were there:  she's been a been indisposed lately.
* Last summer, several in our group traveled to Alaska.  This year, the Byrds will be going!  And the Sayrs are traveling, too... to Canada(?)... right?
* Can't remember if i told you that Cristina Halpern hasn't been able to come to SS lately due to COPD issues... especially when we had all the heat/humidity.  Hope that our recent "cool" spell and lower humidity have helped her.  [I know I'VE enjoyed it!]
* Haven't yet heard how the men's gathering on the Howard's Porch went last night...  Just know that they had

Hi Reatha,

Sent an email to Gaye to see what we could do to help out.  Many of us were wondering this morning what she could use.

Gaye said that she is doing better but is still weak and has some shortness of breath but not as bad.  Her hemaglobin levels are still not up to normal but are getting better.  Dinners, she said, would be helpful.  Cooking is not one of Larry's talents.  Anything would be fine.  She is diabetic but can work around it.  The Rothrocks are bringing dinner Monday.  She says that anything can be of help and thanked us for our prayers and concerns.

Would you send out a note to see if any one can take dinner to Gaye and Larry?
They can text me, email, or call.  That would work to make sure there is no overlap.

Thanks so much for getting the word out!
