Dear Ones, VIRGINIA CLAIRE BRADSHAW made her debut yest'y aft'n (June 27, 2011) at Presby Main (after c.12 hrs of labor).8lb-2oz 20-1/2 inches (head: 34cm) Proud Parents: Amanda and Jon Bradshaw All are well -- Jon did NOT faint during delivery! -- and should go home tomorrow.For those of you on facebook, you can find photos on Jon's page. I haven't fig'd out how to post them on my page yet, and the digital camera I bought the other week is still in its box! [i run too slowly these days to keep up on the tech-hwy...]In the midst of all our joy, I'm still thinking about Ellen (Robison) -- she starts her "yucky" chemo this week -- and Barbara (Barden), whose b'day is tomorrow and who is still undergoing tests to figure out what caused her heart attack the other week. Please keep them in your prayers.Hugs all around,Gran-ra - Tue - 8am

Download or Print Smugmug Pictures

This tells how to download and print pictures from Smugmug. Notice, you have to download first and then print  the same way you print anything on your PC. You have to do one picture at a time. Below are the official Smugmug Instructions.
------------------------

Printing: On your computer

Save digital copies

Here's how:

There's two easy ways to do it:
  • Method 1: Your visitors can move their mouse over the main image in a gallery. They'll see a yellow photo icon on the flyout photo bar. Click that and the full-resolution original image will automatically download to their computer.
    Method 2:
    Alternatively, you can move your mouse over the main image in a gallery and click on Original in the flyout photo bar. The photo will open in the Lightbox and it could be very large. Simply right-click anywhere on the photo and a small menu will pop up. Choose Save Image As... to grab a copy.
  • And of course after you download it, print it the usual way.

Lee Dukes

Subject: sad news...
Date: Mon, 20 Jun 2011 18:39:23 EDT
From: Reatha
Dear Ownbey Family,Just got a call from Sylvia (Dukes) Elwyn: Mr. (Lee) Dukes died yest'y... at age 91. Bubba (Lee III) and his wife Minnie were with him. Apparently it was a heart attack or heart failure.
He HAD gotten to return to his own room c.10 days ago -- family had come down for a little celebration -- after the fall he suffered c.Easter. He'd been in the Asbury Care part of Aldersgate (formerly The Meth. Home) for that period of time.
Sylvia said that the official obit will appear in Wed's OBSERVER, but a short notice should be in tomorrow's paper. Visitation will be at Harry & Bryant Funeral Home on Providence on Wed. night. The memorial service will be Thurs. aft'n at 3:00 w/another visitation following in Jubilee Hall.
I have addresses for Lee III and Elaine, but not Sylvia. I'll get that and send it later.

I realize that a lot of you "newbies" perhaps didn't know Mr. Dukes -- he was one of my youth group counselors when I was in HS, and he remained a spiritual mentor for me over the years :-)

Moved and seconded and approved for $1,600 to be transferred from the general fund into the Helping Hands Fund. Jack mentioned a recommendation by our auditors that in  future all accounts will be maintained by the Church Office. Don Hammer reported that Carol D is home from hospital. Don H said next week he will teach (instead if Cal) and discuss how we proceed with the teaching of Bible lessons as was a main preference in recent Curriculum Survey. Jim taught the lesson on  Not Enough Faith to be an Atheist.

We had a fun time at the Charlotte Cafe Wednesday night. We meet again next month on the second Wednesday at Midnight ($25 to Helping Hands in your Honor if you are one of first four to catch this error, one already has won). We received Health and Happiness reports on Barbara and Carol D who are expected to come home from the hospitals this coming week. Send cards folks, while they get their strength back. Durward was thanked for the Bechtler outing two weeks ago and the Charlotte Cafe outing. Tom Stinson presented three applications recommended by a recent meeting of Helping Hands. ( Click Here to See  Minutes of Helping Hands meeting of 20110608. Click Here to See  Applications for consideration. If link does not open, ask Tom or don for password.) The class voted to approve the recommendations. Jack said that a consideration in approving applications was active involvement of class members in the projects. Sydnor taught the Bible Lesson from THE BIBLE! He mentioned another book he just got and is worthy of a lesson called the other book!. He reported on the Annual Conference at Lake Junaluska and of the  Bishop's shrewd move to send the motion on gay membership  to the Communications Committee. Kevin Wright preached at the 11:00 service on Pentecost, the birth of the church. A link to his sermon will eventually be below

Dear Ownbey Family, BARBARA BARDEN The doc said that her heart was NOT damaged altho' Tue's episode WAS a heart attack, so now they are focusing on WHY it occured and WHAT has been making her short of breath and fatigued. CHESSON SON-IN-LAW Last night at our dinner, Eleanor said that Cal's son-in-law was doing a bit better -- that, of the 3 infections it COULD have been, his was the least harmful. However, I heard from her this morning, saying that now he is retaining fluids, and they are NOT sure why, so... please continue your prayers for their family. I had mentioned the SADRI son-in-law -- Ann Copeland told me that he remains about the same, and that HIS med condition is pancreatic cancer. HARRIETTE THOMPSON H's marathon time was 6 hrs, 53 min :-) The only other octogenarian was an 80-yr old man, and think I already reported that she won her age group! Brenny ran w/her all the way, but I'm not sure that Sydnor, III made it to the end... SYD THOMPSON I have him scheduled to lead our lessong this Sunday... Is that correct? [if so, Syd, would you let me know your topic? thx] JOYCE WITHERINGTON I hear from Ben, III, that she MIGHT be back in Wilmington, after spending some more time w/Laura in Jacksonville, FL. [what's the word, Joyce?] Anything else? Peace, Reatha - Th - 11:30am

Hi  Patsy

First, thank you for your enthusiastic presentation today to our Ownbey Sunday School Class. We enjoyed you,  your visit,  and  your message.

Second, I have been able to get your video on line. I have a limit of ten minutes on Smugmug , and I am sorry but I arbitrarily cut off  5 minutes in the middle  to get it to a little less than 10 minutes.
I later will try to get the whole thing on and will let you know if I am successful. I am still editing the postings and links; feel free to tell me if you see any bugs. Also let me know if any info or pictures need removal.

Here is the link to our Blog. When you get to the Blog, go to the posting for today, June 5, 2011 for info, videos, links, and photos.

We had a presentation today with Audio Visuals from Patsy Burkins from the First Baptist Church-West and the Clara H. Jones Summer Institute. We have contributed to that organization in the past. Carol Douglas is an active supporter. Patsy mixed her talk with a video. We have a video on line above and her comments and pictures on line at links below. We enjoyed her enthusiastic presentation. Thanks Patsy.

We learned that Cal's son in law has had without warning sudden kidney failure in the last day or so. Carol D is still in the hospital and doing better, was looking forward to breakfast when Don H visited earlier in the day. Appreciation was expressed to Durward (in his absence) for the successful visit to the Bechtler Museum; and lunch last week. Harriette was running another Marathon as we talked in Arizona with her two sons. We were reminded of the 6 pm gathering at the Charlotte Cafe Wednesday June 8. There were several contributions for Helping Hands Honorariums today.

Please let me know any Class Notes I missed.

"To Laugh Often and Much" by Ralph Waldo Emerson

I attended a funeral this week of a friend and Church member who left this earth way too soon. A testament to him was that there were around 900 who attended. This guy was the salt of the earth. He was gentle, kind, humble and solid in his faith. As I get older I realize that I am attending more and more funerals. As weird as it sounds it is at a funeral that I feel closest to God and hear great theology.  God teaches and reminds us through other people who he is, what is important and how we should live our own lives. My friend's funeral has had a profound impact in that regard.
I felt compelled to share this poem with you. It describes him! I hope it will be an appropriate poem read at my funeral as well. It deals with measuring a successful life:
                                                                         "To Laugh Often and Much"
                                                                           by Ralph Waldo Emerson
                                                                          To laugh often and much;
                                                                          to win the respect of the intelligent people
                                                                          and the affection of children;
                                                                          to earn the appreciation of honest critics
                                                                          and endure the betrayal of false friends;
                                                                          to appreciate beauty;
                                                                          to find the best in others;
                                                                          to leave the world a bit better
                                                                          whether by a healthy child,
                                                                          a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
                                                                          to know that one life has breathed easier
                                                                          because you lived here.
                                                                          This is to have succeeded.
Think about  it!

CHANGE - Pictures of Helping Hand Activities - Deliver them to any class officer

Hi Folks

Thanks for the response on the request for pictures of Helping Hands activities. One person tried to email me pictures and one did not have any. Another was working on some.
M K already had some pictures. She, efficient as ever, already has them on the Bulletin Board. See below (click to see more).

Pictures are one of the tools we want to use more to emphasize and publicize  Helping Hands.

  • We are changing the procedures listed in my May 26, 2011, email for delivering pictures of Helping Hands activities. That email was sent to people  I  remembered using or requesting Helping Hands Funds.This one is sent to more persons.
  • Instead of delivering pictures to me, on Sunday Jack asked that going forward we deliver them to a class officer.

Please let me or an officer  know if you have questions

thanks

Subject:  Request for Pictures of Helping Hand Activities for Bulletin Board and  other purposes

In a  conversation recently with Tom, Carol D, and Don H, we were excited about the Bulletin Board and especially the info on Helping Hands there. We know  some day we want to add Helping Hands  pictures to the Board , and I was asked if I could work with the pictures and I said yes.
I discussed this further  with Tom and he asked me to go ahead and  begin getting some pictures so that is why I am writing. We do not know exactly what my charge is, but I think we want a few pictures on the Bulletin Board. If we do a brochure , we need pictures.  My personal interest will be to have  some on the internet as well. For whatever reason I have few pictures of Helping Hand activities. I do have the 2009.06.07 Helping Hands Presentation ( if you want to see  Click here and also see pictures below)and it looks like I took a picture of some pictures from a project. I think I have some others but we need ones at the  location the money is used.

Would you share  some of your  pictures with me which you think are relevant. either printed or by digital form (by email although a flash drive or cd would be preferable).

By the way, I have a pretty good section on procedures for Helping Hands at my Ownbey Blog. Click here if interested. There are the guidelines, instructions,  and forms  for giving or requesting contributions. I just added a form I previously missed called "Report of Money Spent-Helping Hands Program" to be completed after the money is used by the advocate. I have a less complete file on all our activities. I  have some copies of  the request forms for example. (The official Ownbey Web site has info on activities for 2010), but we are working on a summary appropriate for a brochure, description of the class activities,  or internet posting and need more info and pictures for any of those purposes. I would like to add some of the pictures we get to the Blog posting as well and maybe we could get on our official Web Site..

Please let me know whether or not  you have pictures (or comments/suggestions) and what I need to do to get them. Thanks

thanks
