20110220 Cal leads us in finishing American Grace and the Men sing at the 11:00 Sanctuary Service

Cal lead us in finishing American Grace. Willard discussed Room in the Inn. He said we are in pretty good shape so far (See list of Helpers below). He also mentioned Virginia. Wilma is in the hospital, Sydnor is under the weather, Connie had a sleepless night. Carol D is out and about but had several days in hospital. Carol N is sick. Janie and Mary Katherine are working on the Bulletin Board; if you want to remove anything, please do. Asked for volunteers to clean up at the back shelves.Earlier the Men sang at the 9:45 and 11:00 Sanctuary Service with Bob Lumadue participating. I did Class Notes this time as Reatha was teaching Fellowship; I think she will do minutes  in  the future and I will  copy her  email to the Blog to provide a history here.

Men In Christ

From the back of Jubilee Hall, I had a wonderful view of the crowd that came to the kickoff of the men’s ministry at Myers Park United Methodist Church. Men In Christ, we’re calling it.

Nearly 200 men turned out to share barbecue and listen to Rev. Jody Seymour of Davidson United Methodist Church challenge us to slow down and pay attention to each other and Jesus. “You were created for a purpose,” he told us. “Or are you just spinning around?” Afterward, we learned about covenant groups rising up in the church – small groups typically meeting once a week, holding each man accountable for how they conduct their lives. More than 30 men signed up on the spot to voluntarily join a covenant group. The rest took home a sign-up card, to fill out and turn in if they feel so led. Men In Christ will gather again as a large group Sunday, May 15, to hear evangelist Leighton Ford.

From the back of Jubilee Hall, my gaze turned from the podium to the crowd. My thoughts turned from Jody’s message to all these men drawn to the promise of what he was saying, searching on this evening for something more in their lives.

The diversity of the crowd was striking. Here were men from their 20s to their 80s. Some I see most every Sunday at church. Some I’ve never seen here. Several wore shirts and ties. Just as many came in jeans and sneakers. At least one had tattoos on his neck and arms.

But the question of what lurks below the surface struck me more powerfully than appearances. What is going on in these men’s lives that led them here to learn how they might get closer to Christ? How many are fighting physical or mental illness? How many feel trapped in a difficult marriage? How many are struggling to raise their children? How many hate going to work? How many can’t pay the bills? How many are simply at a loss? Or how many are doing great and simply want to spiritually enrich their lives?

From the back of Jubilee Hall, I watched the crowd of men file out, headed home with who knows how many burdens. May these men soon find a place to lay them down.

From: Reatha Andrew

Dear Ownbey Family,

Great lesson today, led by JIM HATFIELD.
We were glad to have ARLYENE ARMSTRONG back after her rehab stint so that her hip replacement could heal.
We also welcomed LINDA STEPHENS as she visited our class. She's on BILL WEBB's Care Team and will be joining us from time to time (instead of her usually attending the 9:45 service).
We congratulated HARRIETTE THOMPSON for the honor bestowed on her last Friday when the city proclaimed it Harriette Thompson Day!
We approved the monies for having our class piano tuned (which SHOULD take place later this week).

UPCOMING EVENTS
1. Next weekend, Feb 19-20, at the Marion Diehl Rec Ctr, it's the (annual) Showcase of Woodcarvings. This year is especially dedicated to LEE DUKES, founder of Charlotte Woodcarvers Club. Audio Player Trouble Shooting

NOTE CONCERNING AUDIO PLAYER: Many of you have not been able to get the audio players to work and in some cases to appear. Internet Explorer has trouble as it needs various codecs other browsers have. Google Chrome, Firefox, SeaMonkey work for me better. Also try audio links at MPUMC and if they work for you, these should.
Also, (some folks say the actual Player  is not there, especially if on an iPad. Also need reasonably current Shockwave Flash Player on your computer) See Below>
Click here for bigger pictures  of XXXX  on Smugmug:
First below is a picture of the audio player circled in red line and below that the actual player; click on the actual player to hear audio of the class (some folks say the actual Player  is not there, especially if on an iPad. Also need reasonably current Shockwave Flash Player on your computer)

Actual Player should follow:
Click Black arrow to start audio of the class. The slide show runs automatically and separately

(audio direct Link- works for about every one) http://donredding.com/audio/20110410Sydnor.MP3

Let me know if you still cannot get audio to play.
