Hi
Here is the email from February. I know you mentioned the 4th of July, but  of equal significance  - Flag Day is June 14 in the USA.  Last year around that date and the 4th of July I was active in telling class about the USA and Christian flags - many members did not know there was a Christian Flag (or Methodist flag ) or any thing about it.  . . . .
. Several people were opposed to adding USA and Christian Flags in the room  and there was opposition to the Christian Flag alone. I was prepared to buy the flags and already had priced them out but received little encouragement. I can see reasons some could have for not wanting the USA flag (Separation of church and state, represents our country going against the Beatitudes turn the other cheek, etc.) but for the life of me I could not understand opposition to the Christian flag. About that time, I was asked not to bring it up on class as it was too dicey. I was taken aback that a discussion class could not discuss such a simple issue as flags in our classroom. I dropped the subject after that call; I lost my enthusiasm  . . . . . You are only the second person to mention it in the year since then. Hope this is what you wanted. If not let me know as I  have lots of other stuff  - if you remember I printed brochures about the history, respect, etiquette, and use of both flags and distributed them. I shared what others were doing with pictures of flags in other class rooms and parts of the church. I gave everyone that wanted one the tooth pick flags. I even had put two tooth pick flags on the name plate of our Ownbey 110 Classroom, but I noticed  recently they are gone.  I had flags and pictures of our Class and  Bible class with flags. Unfortunately I gave out hats made like the USA flag; I learned later that hats and clothing made of flag design are against the US Flag Code. I asked the class for forgiveness a couple of Sundays later. Here are links that might be of interest, I have others but it is late . . . I have some pictures from other churches and will send when I find the links, although they might be in some of the galleries linked below.

Hi Folks
Recently I was working on pictures I  took before I was using Smugmug and before digital cameras became good equipment, and I found the following  pictures of the Sanctuary:

  • January 12, 2003 picture with  the US Flag
  • April 20, 2003 picture with the Christian Flag
  • October 19, 2003 Picture with both Flags
  • April 8, 2004 No (Christian) Flag
  • May 2, 2004 No US Flag
Some of us were trying to figure out when  the Sanctuary Flags went away so it looks like they were  here in 2003 and gone in 2004.

May 20, 2004:
Hi Ownbey Folks (06/25/2010) Been a while since a MESSAGE has been emailed. Willard, as he is wrapping up his work at Habitat, asked me to help with drafting one and here is what we have. 1> Addresses As Reatha shared with you recently, we have an address change for Arlyene: x.x.x.x.x You can get all address info at links on our Blog or directly at http://www.donredding.com/ownbey/classroster.pdf Username /password needed. Remember them as we might have a test. image We are still asking for wedding anniversary dates if you want to share. Some of us missed that the Rasberrys celebrated their 50th until we saw the flowers in the Sanctuary in their honor. 2> Lessons, celebration, and cake. We have had fine lessons over the last few weeks, and we are looking forward to Cal Chesson's lesson Sunday 6/27. The subject has changed slightly to "God and Country." No book, he will speak from his "research" so we do not need to do any homework! Thanks to Cal and Eleanor for the cake in celebration of Harriette's successful marathon run recently. Harriette, we are sorry you could not join the party in your honor, but we have plenty of pictures of all of us enjoying your cake. Check the following links and pay particular attention to Harriette's image on the cake. Eleanor was worried it would not pass the censors. (As always, let Don know if any pictures or info should be removed.) Click here for video or go to http://donredding.smugmug.com/02-Church-Sunday-School/Ownbey-2010/20100620-SS-Cake-celebrating/12628884_7LkdQ#913154326_Df64e-A-LB image image Chick was the speaker that day (6/20/2010), and we had a good discussion including the importance of Constantine in the spread of Christianity. Someone suggested we would not be sitting here today talking about Christianity if it were not for Constantine (and someone added, maybe Paul).Chick was having fun we could tell as he shared about his younger days entering and winning singing contests with Sydnor egging him on. He also told of mistaking baby Jesus for a light bulb in a play - you had to have heard him to appreciate the mood. Unfortunately we did not get a recording of the frivolity but perhaps that is better. image A video has the same pictures as the Harriette Celebration above, but the audio has Chick's opening comments about Constantine. Also includes Chick singing a few notes. Click on the picture of Chick above or Click here or go to http://donredding.smugmug.com/02-Church-Sunday-School/Ownbey-2010/20100620-SS-Cake-celebrating/12628884_7LkdQ#908697609_nrwka-A-LB 3> Flags And if, over the last few weeks, you did not get an American Flag, or the booklets (on the Flag Code, the Christian Flag, the Methodist Flag and Flame) get Sunday or let me know if we run out, and I will make more. Also, we will have Christian Flags for everyone Sunday and more American flags as we approach the 4th. There remain some photos for people who were at our our flag day celebration so pick them up also. image After we discussed the Flag Code and mentioned the Christian Flag, some one suggested we consider getting flags for our room. If we do, I think it should not be from the class treasury.A couple of people offered to contribute so far. Let us know if you have a preference and we can discuss later. Several other class rooms have both the American and Christian flags, and the Wesley class says the pledge to the American flag AND to the Christian flag each Sunday. Here is Wesley class: image and the Fellowship Class image with the two flags PLUS their Sunday School banner! To see some flags at MPUMC, Click here or on the flags or go to http://donredding.smugmug.com/02-Church-Sunday-School/MPUMC/FlagsMpumc/12569962_Ky3dp#902354608_szuGn Click Here for an article presenting both sides and a middle ground to having flags in a sanctuary. Click here for the article mentioned by Reatha Saturday in which the writer is opposed to the flag in the sanctuary. And if you are interested in the Billboard (mentioned in the Observer recently) which left out "under God" click here or on picture or go to http://donredding.smugmug.com/Sports/Flag-and-National-Anthem/OneNation-under-God-Undivided/12681909_vabjd#912306392_Q4mXe-A-LB image And finally if you want to hear Dixie and see that flag, Click here 6> Communications: Even though the MESSAGE has been a little slow recently, the Blog and Web Site are alive and well. Check it often to see the latest on Ownbey. Let us know if you do not want to receive emails such as this or if you have suggestions. Willard Gourley/Don Redding June 26, 2010
