> After the opening hymn, Jim started class with a prayer. Joyce was present and Jim read a poem by Ben III about his daughter Christy which was printed in the program for the services.
> In Honor of Harriette, next Saturday a hymn written by  Stephen Paulus in honor of Harriette will be performed by the Chancel Choir in the Sanctuary at Noon for Family and Friends and also Sunday at all the Services in the Sanctuary. Sydnor said Ownbey members are invited because we are friends - and family.Here is his quote beginning at 5:49 on the audio for the class "Next Saturday at Noon, they will be performing an anthem that has been written by a fellow Stephen Paulus in Harriette's Honor. It was arranged by the church and choir because she had been in the choir for 50 years when she retired. It is to be performed at noon (in the Sanctuary) for family and friends - so you are friends and in fact you are family so you are welcome to come . . .but you are especially invited to come at noon on Saturday."
The anthem is based on Psalm 121 and entitled My Help Comes from the Lord, according to the Cornerstone of 2/1/2012
>Reatha was on Retreat with Women’s Group and there was no Health and Happiness info reported except Don R told of  how thankful he was of the immediate miracle of cataract surgery. Mary Katherine was also on the Retreat but sent word all bills paid and will make a report soon.
>Curriculum Council meeting (all welcome)  THURS. FEB. 2, at 7pm - room TBA, date changed because of Administrative Board meeting on original date. Don Hammer plans to lead the meeting and he is scheduled to teach the class on February 05 
>Spaghetti Dinner at 12:15 in Jubilee Hall on Sunday March 4.  Durward mentioned the effort Shebra puts into the preparation and we want a good turnout. Durward got class ok to invite other SS classes to join us.
>Helping Hands. Tom Stinson reported we raised over $1,300 from the Christmas Breakfast held in the Ownbey C;lass room in December

>Lessons: Today,Jan 29th-topic:Grace-discussion led by Cal Chesson. We discussed Grace in general and Prevenient Grace  and Original Sin in particular. I think most folks in class were against it (sin, that is). Some believed in Original sin, some did not. Was acknowledged the Methodist Church belies in Original Sin though it is not mentioned in the Bible. I found the Methodist Church believes a child is born with a sinful nature:
Home > Our World > Leader Resources > Does The United Methodist church believe that babies are born in sin? Yes. We do believe that babies, at birth, are contaminated by sin. The ancient teaching of the church on this is called the doctrine of original sin. The Articles of Religion in our Book of Discipline state:"Article VII - Of Original or Birth Sin Original sin standeth not in the following of Adam (as the Pelagians do vainly talk), but it is the corruption of the nature of every man, that naturally is engendered of the offspring of  Adam, whereby man is very far gone from original righteousness, and of his own nature inclined to evil, and that continually."

20120122 Latest Postage Stamp Rate Increases and Changes

Latest Postage Stamp Rate Increases and Changes
The price for a First-Class Mail stamp will increase one cent on January 22, 2012. The new cost for a First-Class stamp will be 45 cents.

Rates effective January 22, 2012:

* Letters (1 ounce) will increase 1-cent to 45 cents.

* First-Class letter additional ounces (for letters over 1 ounce) will remain unchanged at 20 cents.

* Postcards will increase 3-cents to 32 cents.

* Letters to Canada or Mexico (1 ounce) will increase 5-cents to 85 cents.

* Letters to other international destinations will increase 7-cents to $1.05

Good news for business mailers: When the new prices go into effect on January 22, 2012, the second ounce for First-Class Mail Presort letters will be free. This will give companies expanded opportunities to advertise new services and products to their customers as part of bill and statement First-Class Mail Presort mailings weighing between one and two ounces.

> After the opening hymn, Jim started class with a prayer asking guidance in our thoughts, words , and ….Joyce and Laura were present, and Jim expressed our sorrow in their loss of Christy. >Reatha reported Nancy Guthery was better and trying to get stronger from  congestive heart failure. Reatha mentioned two articles in paper today, one about Paul Simon who said he was more spiritual than religious – the subject of our lesson last week; the other about the Rabbi who was Michael Jackson’s friend. Reatha’s  leg got better then worse last week and she was hobbling today. She drove Bus for Wesley Class trip to Art Museum in Raleigh for Rembrandt showing.

Eulogy for Christy Ann Witherington

(Here is the eulogy delivered by Bill Arnold for Christy (written by Ben and Ann) on Wednesday morning at the 11 a.m. worship service at First Methodist Church Lexington.
EULOGY FOR CHRISTY ANN WITHERINGTON
Christy was born in the shadow of Durham Cathedral in northern England on August 14, 1979 and died January 11, 2012 in Durham, North Carolina.
Christy loved her British roots. Her summer term in England studying Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon with Ben’s English Prof from Carolina, Chris Armitage, was a true life highlight. She called and said, with her newly-minted British accent, “Hello Mum and Dad”. Fortunately she was able to twice more visit her homeland and explore its rich heritage. Christy was not just an Anglophile – she was born British.

Join Adults Plus! (ages 55 and over) for The Story of Our Own Sanctuary Tapestry, with renowned fiber artist, Jose` Fumero on Wednesday, January 18. Meet in the Sanctuary for this program at 10:30 a.m. and then accompany us for a $5.00 lunch in Jubilee Hall at noon. For lunch we will have baked chicken, rice pilaf, green beans, salad, roll and dessert with iced tea.

>Reatha mentioned the funeral for Christy Witherington will be next week in Lexington Kentucky. She passed away suddenly last week. Click here  for info. Ben led a session here at MPUYMC last Monday night. Lou will discuss one of Ben’s books next Sunday. Reported Bill W is at the Summit as Linda recovers from a medical procedure. Ann C had surgery recently - no food or visitors now, but prayers and cards appreciated. Betty fell and broke her nose, hurting her eyesight which already was consider legally blind. Christina is recovering from her ankle break and appreciates calls and outings (and cards I add). A member reported Jane P about the same. Don H planned to be with us today but developed an upset stomach.
>Jim mentioned the AV system fixed to let DVD go through our sound system. Jim  shared a story about prayer  with  results similar to “I prayed for courage and received  dangers to overcome,  . .nothing I asked for did I receive but all I needed.”

Today’s Lesson Assignment from Durward: “Again I will be using the book, THE LIFE OF MEANING -- this time, ch.4, I'M SPIRITUAL NOT RELIGIOUS. Questions for you:1. What does BEING SPIRITUAL mean? 2. What does BEING RELIGIOUS mean? 3. What is the DIFFERENCE in the two, if any? I plan to open w/these questions, and then sit down and listen to you.Please, no fisticuffs -- after all, this is a Sunday School class.” Durward Owen
