Jim lead with a prayer and reading from Jesus Calling.
Cal presented a recommendation of the  Helping Hands Committee  that asked

• the class to approve $300 out of the general fund (not from Helping Hands) for framing the original architectural plans for the church. He mentioned several people had pledged to cover the remaining $350 +/_ cost of the project. The Committee felt the  project was a worthy one which  we desired to finance, but it did not meet the objective of Helping Hands. The recommendation was seconded and  approved by the class. 

We learned Nancy Swonger had changed churches and was not longer a member of the Class (or Library Committee). She responded to our card saying we missed her. We signed three more cards today, and gave one to  who was present!

This Week (05/20/2012)

Jim started class with a prayer and reading from Jesus Calling which fitted in with Reatha's lesson.
Bob lead us in  the singing of hymns 378 and 377.

Harriette runs the San Diego Marathon for the 14th time 2 weeks from today. She has raised over $100,000 for charity doing this.  (Their son Sydnor is going to Afghanistan for a year to serve as a Chaplain. leaving June 9.) Sign up for Wednesday June 13 6 p/m at Charlotte Cafe with $250! The 10 riders will meet at 9:15 a/m and leave Church at 9:30 a/m on May 26 Saturday for the Museum trip down town. Museum opens at 10 a/m, and Durward will be there with the tickets. Keep in mind it is Speed Week.  (Note: parking next door in 7th Street Lot convenient; not sure how will be during Speed Week). Mary Katherine and Don R mentioned the Nova Voce concert later today (5/20)and the one last night. Links here 20120519 Nova Voce With Mary Katherine.    Men in Christ BBQ tonight Sunday night ($7) for Mens Group at 6 p/m. Please make a note of the Adult Plus outing ($5) to Lake Norman to Rev and Anita McIntosh is June 13, Wednesday (same day as the Charlotte cafe social.)  Melvin and Anita have been the host for this event for over 10 years and we thank them for their hospitality. Here is a link to pictures from 2002. Also there is an Adult plus day trip to Blowing Rock ($30) on August 15 (Wednesday). In answer to a question, Reatha said after this week she will take care of getting the cards discussed earlier.

Durward reports:C.S.Lewis wrote the novel THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS, and now this great Christian work has found its way onstage.  This wickedly funny and deeply inspiring adaptation will change the way you think about how demons and angels influence your everyday life. It will be presented in Charlotte for 3 performances at the Knight Theater.  If we have 10 or more wanting to attend, Durward can get tickets for $36.25/per.  That includes all fees and is for the 4pm performance on Sat, June 30th. Please call him to reserve spaces or ask questions.

The lesson was a  continuation of the  Study of Romans (8:1-11) - lesson #6, Living in the Spirit - led by Reatha Romans 8:1-11 (King James Version):
8 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Simply put, I found "Simply Jesus" quite hard to put down. Author N. T. Wright has a way of making the book's chapters interesting, informative, clear and meaningful. For example:
1. He is great with metaphors, such as his repeated use of the 1991 "perfect storm" (the one that eventually became the topic for a successful book and movie).
2. He does a great job putting events in context. For example, through extensive citations of Old Testament passages, together with a description of the conditions of the Jews during the Roman occupation before Jesus arrived, he explains what the Jewish people were expecting from God.
3. Throughout the book Wright jumps around in time in a way that helps the reader connect events that sometimes occurred over centuries.
4. He writes in a way that helps the reader visualize important events as if watching a 3-D movie, such as when Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.

Last Week (05/13/2012) Jim and Nancy welcomed back from 4,000 mile trip to Nova Scotia. Jim started class with a prayer and a reading from the Jesus Calling book; "do not worry about tomorrow, this is not a suggestion, it is a command. . . ." Durward said we will leave Church at 9 a/m on May 26 for the Museum trip down town. Mary Katherine mentioned Nova Voce Women's Choral Concert next Saturday and Sunday at St Patrick Church in Dillworth ($15). Melody Makers at Adults Plus Wednesday 5/16 ($5) from Mathews at 10:30 . Men in Christ BBQ next Sunday night ($7). Lou and Martha led us in singing Hymns 314 (I come to the Garden_and He walks with me and he talks with me) and 348 (Softly and Tenderly Jesus is calling).

In discussing the nature of future lessons, Don H said various DVDs are available, and he wanted to try one with us today. It is 6 parts; we did part 1. Subject was "Embracing Emerging Christianity" by Phyllis Tickle. Each part consists of 15 minute discussion on subjects followed by small group discussion. After the lesson Don H asked what we thought of it and he encouraged us to give him feedback. One idea was to let the Curriculum Committee study and make a recommendation for use of DVDs. (NOTE TO DON HAMMER: please let me have any editing you want for these notes, thanks, don.)

20110424 Easter Services with Readings by Reatha

Class Notes: (I asked Reatha, Durward,  and Jack to help edit but would appreciate help from others too, thanks)
In Ownbey Sunday School, Jack presided. He asked that something from Ken G be put on Bulletin Board (Jack, please tell me what it was and I will edit this). Jack thanked Bob and Reatha for help with our music. Durward announced an outing Sunday May 29(changed); Details: (1) we will ride a bus driven by Jim H and a van by Durward to the  (2) Bechtler Museum (of modern and contemporary art), (3) leaving the church parking lot at 11:00(changed), (4) dropped off at front door for Lunch at new Mint Museum Uptown, tour, return to parking lot we leave from and at Queens by 3:30p.m (Changed). (5) Restaurant at new Mint Museum Uptown is rated one of  top 10 in Charlotte (6) Meal cost depends on  choices but "reasonable" with local foods (7) 22 slots, sign up next Sunday May 01. Durward reported we will have dinner outings in June, July, and August. Details: (1) Charlotte Cafe at 6 p.m. (2) Second Wednesday of each month, 93) Sign up later. Durward also encouraged us to consider each Sunday   parking at Myers Park Traditional School at 2132 Radcliffe Ave  and riding bus to church; checking to see if continues after Easter. A reminder that the Class Picnic for April 30 has been canceled. Reatha noted  we need to arrange that the chairs not be placed along the wall in front of the bulletin board. She reported Happiness in that her sister Claire, daughter Amanda, and Amanda's husband John were visiting. Reatha then presented the class in the form of  Easter Readings. Don Hammer gave out an Ownbey Class Curriculum Survey and asked us to review for later discussion. Sydnor mentioned today is Harriette's last day singing with the choirs. Recently three people earned money for Helping Hands by taking Computer Courses at Southminister. Also, Carol D suggested I share with the class the following computer class info:

Obviously he did a lot of preparation and covered several complicated issues (Paul, justification, faith, grace, works,etc) well in a short amount of time. Then again all of our teachers do thorough jobs. The new Lesson Schedule is out and copies may be found in our classroom or on the web site and blog. The lesson this week is CARING FOR GOD'S CREATION, led by Reatha Andrew. Earth Day is today, Thursday April 22. Next week Yours Truly will lead us in GOD AND GOLF. There are several meetings scheduled to discuss the more than half a million dollar renovation of our wonderful Sanctuary. One was 6:30 p.m. Wednesday 4/21/ (after Hot Wednesday meal). Others will be around 12 noon on Sunday 4/25 and 7:00 p.m. Tuesday 4/27 - all in the Sanctuary. Please keep Reatha informed of any Health and Happiness news. Let Tom Stinson know of Helping Hands needs. Thanks to Harriette Thompson, Lou Bledsoe, and Bob Lumadue for their help over the years leading our music and singing. Let them know if you have favorites you would like for us to use.
