20161221 Update From Reatha

Dear Ownbey Family,


REMEMBER:  this Sunday, Christmas Day, there is NO Sunday School~

But we WILL meet the following Sunday, on New Year's Day, for Simply Social time -- just know that there will be NO COFFEE provided by the church that day.  If you MUST have that SS cup, you'll need to stop at Starbuck's or Panera or McDonald's or bring some from home  :-)

I may try to bring in my hot water kettle and some tea bags... and if anyone drinks instant coffee anymore, i could bring in some...
Just let me know!  I plan on brining in disposable hot drink cups, even tho' i might also bring in some cold drinks, like cranberry g'ale...

Dear Ownbey Family,

1.  Please read the note from Barbara (found below).

2.  Mary Katherine HAD planned to lead our lesson tomorrow on James' book, WHY THIS JUBILEE?, but she is fighting a respiratory problem.  The Lumadues will fill in for her, should she not be able to come tomorrow -- and i HOPE she stays home, avoiding our arctic cold.

3.  Speaking of the cold:  I had a call from Roland Elliott, asking all SS classes to bring in winter clothing of ALL types/sizes/etc.  For years, she has collected said items to take to Crisis Assistance Ministry.  She's expanding her search, so to speak, this year by going church-wide in her appeal.

4.  I also heard from Jim:  Richard Harrison is asking for "church clothes" for the men at McCreesh.  You can bring any items to SS for Jim to collect, or contact him (Jim) for more info.

For those of you who will brave the cold in the morning, i'll see you then!

I have been asked to pass this update along to our SS classes from our parish nurse, Susan Mobley who has been working with William. Please share this with your class members.

This is an update on our friend William. Beginning in January William is being asked by Supportive Housing to pay rent of $87.00 a month.

His job as dishwasher has been eliminated, thus he may approach you, and others, asking for funds to pay his rent.

I would suggest you not give William money directly. If you feel so led to assist William, contact me for ways to support him.

Dear Ownbey Family,

Presiding this month will be Connie and Durward... except not THIS Sunday:  they'll be out of town at yet another grandchild's wedding  :-)

This makes #3 for this year alone!

LESSONS

Dec 4, 2d Sunday in Advent -- before our Carol Sing (which we postponed from last Sunday) we'll take part in a Local Missions Project:  writing thank you notes to teachers at Sedgefield Elem and/or Sedgefield MS.  Each envelope will have a teacher's name on it, so we can personalize our thanks.  Lisa (Howell) is coordinating this and will supply us w/the "live differently" notecards.  Should take only a few minutes... esp. since "our" generation knows HOW to write notes!

Dec 11, 3d Sunday in Advent -- Mary Katherine will lead us from James' book, WHY THIS JUBILEE?

Dec 18, 4th Sunday in Advent -- Lou, following tradition, will share various Christmas readings  :-)

Dec 25, Christmas Day -- NO Sunday School -- only ONE service:  11:00 in Sanctuary

Jan 1, 2017 -- no "standard" lesson -- we'll just meet to fellowship  :-)

Speaking of weddings... and Lou...  Don't know if i've written about the engagement notice i saw last month in the OBSERVER...

Martha and Lou's g'daughter, Carol Gainey Bledsoe, is getting married in February  :-)

Forgot to write down the groom's name, but they've known (dated?) each other since HS, attended Carolina together, and both are in the medical field (or finishing studies therein).

Carol is the daughter of Judge and Mrs. Louis Adams Bledsoe, III.

And speaking of family...

Harriette played a concert at Sydnor's church in Rutherfordton last Sunday  :-)

I'm sure things went well.  [haven't checked on fb yet...]

Harriette was also due for her oral surgery this past Wed -- haven't heard how that went yet either...

HAVE heard from Wilma that daughter Laura's procedure on her leg/ankle has been completed, and altho' Laura is in some pain, the doctor said it was a success.  They are hopeful that this will help rebuild tissue in her ankle which had "died."  PRP (platelet-rich plasma) was just written up in last Sunday's OBSERVER -- did you see the article?  Laura's in good company:  Peyton Manning and Tiger Woods...And i'm not sure if i had written Wilma's "own" news:  she'll be moving to the Raleigh area (soon?) to be closer to Greg's family.

Linda emailed me Tuesday that CHARLOTTE CAFE at Park Road Shopping Center has finally reopened!  I had noticed it just that aft'n... as i drove down the shopping center road (after having eaten at the Soda Shop!)  I DID eat there yest'y -- they still have chicken/dumplings as one of their Thursday specials  :-)

I will send out another email about the proposals for class procedures which were recommended by the joint SS committee meeting -- which met before Thanksgiving -- and which were reported to us in class last Sunday.  After more discussion -- hence the postponement of our Carol Sing -- we APPROVED the proposals.  We also approved Oscar's application to Helping Hands to help w/his tuition as he pursues certification in Spiritual Counseling.  [You can GOOGLE "Charlotte Spirituality Center" to learn more about this program... which has ties to CMC]
